Rubber is a completely inert, dead material, significantly reducing noise. Rubber dockfenders formed by the extrusion process were the first widely available resilientenergy absorbing fender system introduced on a general basis. An infinitevariety of sections, size and length are possible and can beproduced without expensive tooling costs. Our rangecovers every requirement from 22mm light craftfendering to heavy duty 1500mm diacylindrical fenders to provideimpact protection for quaywalls.

Quay FendersExtruded fenders provide a resilient buffer with low energyabsorption and are used mainly for berthing small ships andpleasure craft. A wide range of profiles is available, of which thefollowing are the most common;

Square or RectangularThese fenders can be solid or hollow, and are normally installed as side belting.D FendersDesigned for rigid mounting, D Fenders are ideal as continuous strip on quays, pontoons anddriven timber piles. They are also installed as belting on tugboats, dredgers and workboats.Cylindrical FendersSoft, resilient cylindrical fenders can be hung on chains, so that the rubber does not have to bedrilled for installation. These fenders are suitable for both tidal and non tidal harbours.

Start fitting the weather strip atthe centre of the top panel, pushfully home, all the way round, trimthe length.

Finally, insert the filler strip(starting away from the top joint),using the glazing tool wherenecessary.

Small and medium production volumes are generally produced bycompression and transfer moulding processes with injection moulding beingused for large volume production. To your requirementsTechnix use acrylic plastics. plastic glass, perspex® andplexiglas® for boat windows, boat hatches, stowage forglassware etc., point of sale displays (ie leaflet holders),museum display cases and machine guards. There aremany processes involved in manufacturing goods inacrylic. The real name for acrylic plastic is polymethylmethacrylate and it is thermoplastic. Plexiglas® is abrand name for perspex® which is a clear, transparentthermoplastic synthetic resin. Plexiglas® is often mis-splet as 'Plexiglas®'.

Bending and welding of acrylics are processes used inmanufacture - eg machine guards, fish tanks, skylightreplacements etc. Plastic bending - ie line bending,creates the tight bends on formable sheets of plastic.

Characteristics of 'acrylic' the material/acrylic plasticinclude that it is half the weight of glass, resistant toimpact, it is not affected by salt (hence it is good forboat windows and hatches), and has a temperaturerange of -30O to 160OF for continuous use. Plexiglas®

was the first acrylic to become impact-modified, and isa cross between standard acrylicand polycarbonate.

How it worksFour key layers of material are laminated together, each deal with a specific

part of the problem. Together they will reduce noise dramatically.

1 A tough flexible facing. This must strengthen and protect the material, while being'transparent' to allow noise to pass into the composite.

2 A Techsorb foam absorption layer. Varying in thickness for different uses, this layer is the'carpets and curtains' in a house.

3 The heavy barrier polymeric layer. This is a special polymeric (artificial lead) layer varying in weight fordiffering applications and acting like a brick wall in preventing noise transmission.

4 The isolation layer. This thin layer of foam stops noise reverberating from the barrier layer to the bulkhead - justlike in double glazing units.

The need for sound insulationWhen looking at the source of unwanted noise you willfrequently find the environment has a large part to play in theproblem - ie engines encased in housing which cause echo frombare surfaces. This is highlighted, if you consider how noise istransmitted in an empty room, compared to the same roomfurnished with carpets and curtains etc, which absorb soundconsiderably.

Sports Cruisers, particularly withtwin engines, will benefit greatlyfrom 'double-decking' insulation,with a 150mm gap between layers.

It is best to leave noise cavernseither side of the engine. Fit aremovable bulkhead beside theengine and insulate this.Remember, fuel tanks collect andamplify noise.

With twin engines in a new build,try to put each engine in its owncompartment with a removablebulkhead between.

If possible, bulkheads should totallyencase the engine area. Theyshould also be free of unnecessarybolted on items, forcing areas ofbulkhead to be left withoutinsulation.

Insulation material should be fittedover the total surface of the engineroom bulkheads, not just betweenthe deckheads joists and inconvenient clear areas.

With engine boxes, remember thatthe noise will flow under thegeneral deck area. Bulkheadsshould continue right down to thehull, leaving limber holes for bilgewater if necessary. Insulate down tobilge water only.

With the sound insulation allaround the engine, furtherimprovements can be achieved byfitting a high density barrierbetween mats or carpeting and theactual deck.

InstallationIf part of an acoustic composite the material is normally adhered to the

background surface using a separate adhesive or by means of theoptional self adhesive backing. However mechanical fixings arerecommended. If SoundBlok is used in isolation and in a vertical

orientation then load spreading washers or clamping plates should beemployed to prevent tearing.

Tradegrip Hypabond is a quality, high performance neoprene adhesive. It can be used as either asingle or two-part adhesive depending on the materials to be bonded and the bond strengthsrequired. It was developed primarily for use with Tradecure 100 curing agent to bond a range ofrubbers and rubber coated fabrics (eg neoprene, hypalon, natural rubber etc) in inflatableconstructions such as life rafts, dinghies, high speed inflatable RIBs, etc. It may also be used inthe manufacture of dry and wet suits for the bonding of rubber or nylon coated fabricsthemselves.

Tradegrip HypaBond may also be used as a single component adhesive in many general purposeapplications for bonding materials such as Formica, Melamine and laminates to wood, metal etc.

Not suitable for bonding plasticised PVC (unless the substrate is first primed with Tradegrip PVC)or expanded polystyrene.

TRADEGRIP HYPABOND

Dunlop Thixofix contact adhesive has been developed for the specific aim of making simple thebonding of laminated plastics to wood and other substrates, whilst maintaining the well provenefficiency of ordinary contact adhesives. The following application characteristics of Thixofix make thisproduct simple to use:

Thixofix is thixtropic. It is a gel, similar to non-drip paint, so it spreads like butter. It does not spill andcuts out the mess normally associated with ordinary contact adhesives. When bonding normal sizedsheets of laminated plastics, the unique 'slideability' of Thixofix allows the accurate positioning ofmaterials. For large sheets of laminates use Trade Formula Thixofix.

DUNLOP THIXOFIX

A high performance glue with a long shelf life. A single part, fast curing adhesive that bonds in seconds.Will economically bond metals, rubber, ceramics and most plastics to themselves or each other.

BOND CHARACTERISTICS

ADHESIVES


Tradegrip HH has been developed as a multi-purpose adhesive of brushing viscosity. It forms strong,permanent contact bonds between the following materials: rigid PVC sheet, polyurethane foams of thepolyester and polyether types, leather, polyester glass fibre, rubber sheet and extrusions all of which may bebonded to each other or to hardboard, chipboard, wood, painted or unpainted metal. Rigid laminatedplastics such as Formica, Warerite, Melamine, etc may also be bonded using this adhesive.

Tradegrip HH is well established in the automotive and coach building industries as a multi-purpose bodytrim adhesive, typical body trim and coach building operations include door and fascia trim, roofheadlinings, parcel racks and glove compartments. It has also proved its versatility in the shop and bar fittingindustries and in the boat building, furniture and footwear industries.

TRADEGRIP HH

Web Tack is an aerosol based contact adhesive with pressure sensitive properties. The superior bondstrength properties and exceptional tack makes Web Tack an excellent choice for most permanentadhesive applications.
