I hope that everyone enjoyed their Christmas, and is look- ing forward to the New Year. For those of you with struggles and defeats this past year, I pray your 2016 brings you much peace and many successes. Whether we think we have life by the tail, we all know there is room for improvement somewhere. I encour- age you to reflect on this past year and make the commitment to any resolutions you may have for 2016. “You’ll never change your life until you change some- thing you do daily. The secret of your success is found in your daily routine.” – John C Maxwell. As 2016 begins, we are almost halfway through our chapter year and still have an exciting list of programs to offer. To highlight a few, we will have Society President, Mr. David Under- wood, giving our program in January, a refrigeration tour in February at PTC Culinary Arts and our third ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer visit of the year from Dr. Thomas Lawrence coming up in April. Thank you all who participated and volunteered for the 2 nd Annual Pork Butt Fundraiser to help send our ASHRAE Student members to the winter conference in Orlando, Florida January 23-27. There were 46 pork butts pur- chased and nearly $2,000 raised. A spe- cial thanks goes out to Josh Faulkner for coordinating this successful event, Aire- tech for donating the pork butts and the use of their smoker, Randy Moore and Nick Moore for cooking, Powers of Ar- kansas and Ron McCarty for the use of their smoker, and Arvest Bank for the use of their smoker. Thank you to Phil Watson and Chance Hollingsworth for coordinating a successful Arkansas ASHRAE Social / Membership event at Lost Forty on December 3 rd . This was a successful event with a handful of pro- spective new members and current mem- bers. The night included appetizers, local brewed favorites, and a brewery tour. One area that your leadership has strug- gled with for the past years has been our RSVPs for each meeting. We typically get half as many RSVPs for each meeting than the amount that actually ends up attending. Having more attendees is not always a bad thing except for the fact we hope to use the RSVP list as a means to figure the amount of food needed for each meeting. Some meetings we have too much food and others we run out before everyone has a chance to make a plate. We would like to make better use of our funds and get our food order cor- rect every meeting. We understand there are last minute changes to schedules, cancellations, etc.. . and would still en- courage you to attend otherwise. We feel that our RSVP list versus actual should still be better than our current 40%. – 50% rate even with a few extenuating circumstances. We have developed a committee to work on ideas and incen- tives to increase our RSVP vs Actual. One of these areas of discussion is how to make the RSVP process easier. Drew Grant is working on options through Star Chapter to make this easier where we will not be required to log in with a user name and password every time. There are a few other items in the works, but we are always looking for feedback from our members. If you have any questions, comments, or ideas please feel free to contact me [email protected] We look forward to seeing you in Janu- ary for our Society President, David Un- derwood’s program on “Commissioning Tips, Tricks, and Techniques.” Last but not least, please be sure to RSVP early for this event (even if you are prepaid for the year)! STUDENT ACTIVITIES REPORT—JOSH FAULKNER, STUDENT ACTIVITIES CHAIR

Student Activities has had a busy couple of months! I have a lot to report, including educational presentations, membership promo-tion, the Pork Butt Fundraiser, and Winter Conference. Let’s get right to the meat of it. The Pork Butt fundraiser was a great success again this year. To say we exceeded our goal is an understatement. With sixteen sold

by UALR, twenty by ASU, and ten to our Chapter Members, we had deliveries all over the state! This accomplishment did not come

easy, though. It took lots of volunteer effort by several people to make it the success that it was. The students worked really hard

pushing these pork butts to their family and friends. We owe a big thanks to Airetech, Arvest Bank, and Powers of Arkansas, for

providing the three trailer smokers needed to handle all the orders. But, they didn’t smoke themselves. The team, including Randy

and Nick Moore, Forrest Moseley, Ron McCarty, and I worked well into the night to get these orders cooked, wrapped, chilled, and

sorted for delivery. Airetech deserves a special thanks for donating the pork butts, which means every dollar raised will go towards

helping students get to the Winter Conference.

It hasn’t been all cookouts for Student Activities. Our Chapter Members have been promoting engineering and HVAC to local ele-mentary schools too. Melanie Richardson and Scott Geurin of Brown Engineers gave a talk to 5th graders at Fulbright Elementary about energy and engineering. The students enjoyed helping Scott design his Christmas light display with an engineering activity the two prepared. Another Chapter Member, John Hodaway, wowed the 3rd grade class with a talk that touched on HVAC, outer space, and the new Broadway Bridge design. If you would like to speak to a group of students please contact me at [email protected]. We need speakers for all ages and it is a very rewarding way promote engineering and our field. Mr. Alex Trulove with Brown Engineers is shown in the picture below (lower left) giving UALR students on a tour of the recent chiller plant upgrades at the Statehouse Convention Center. Alex has been a tremendous help this year. Not only did he guide this tour, he was also my co-presenter at Arkansas Tech and UALR. The next time you see Alex at a chapter meeting, please give him a big hug. Thanks for all of your hard work this year, Alex! As you can see I have enlisted the help of many of my co-members and I cannot thank them enough. We will continue to promote engineering to k-12 and college students, especially during the upcoming DiscoverE week. So if you are not already involved, please consider giving a talk to students this February.

MEMBERSHIP PROMOTION NIGHT— PHIL WATSON, MEMBERSHIP PROMOTION CHAIR

The Membership Promotion Night at Lost Forty Brewery turned out to be a great success. Those who attended consisted of local

engineers, designers, sales representatives, and a few of their spouses. We had a total of 14 ASHRAE members and 2 prospective

members attend the social hour and brewery tour. The evening began with a social hour, which went very well, and was followed

with the brewery tour conducted by one of the Lost Forty tour guides. Those who attend the tour were given the opportunity to learn

about the history of Lost Forty Brewery and the refrigeration process involved with the production of their beer. Lost Forty Brewing

takes its name from the historic, storied forest that stands on 40 acres of Arkansas's last truly virgin soil in Calhoun County. The

brewery’s uniqueness has proven to show great success since their capacity has more than doubled since they opened their doors a

year ago. Their manufacturing process is fairly remarkable when compared to that of Budweiser’s located in St. Louis Mis-

souri. Lost Forty Brewery is capable of canning only 2 beers at a time. The number of cans they can in 1 year is equal to how many

Budweiser is capable of canning in 45 seconds!

Overall, the tour was pretty impressive and educational. For those who were unable to attend, I sure hope you can attend future MP

Nights and thank you to all that made this event possible!
