Research Design Process 1. Defining the problem Draws on personal experience, literature, experts

2. Research design • Quantitative, qualitative, mixed mode • Descriptive, correlational, experimental

3. Data collection Variables, setting, participants, instruments, procedures.

4. Data analysis Depends on data: graphs, tables & stats

5. Communicating the results Recommendations for practice, further research Publishing in journals, books, conference presentations.

Learning Objective

• Defined by accreditation and AQF • ECTE953:

– (d) show a high level of written and oral communication skills

• ECTE451 and ENGG851: – (d) Demonstrate high level oral communication skills

through the delivery of a seminar presentation speaking to a captive audience

Page 4: ENGG851 Student Lecture 09

Learning Activity

• Research has shown that watching yourself in action, is the best way to improve

• Help your peers by providing feedback • Practice your skill to critique

• Oral presentation is very important – first step to

any job in an interview

Page 5: ENGG851 Student Lecture 09

ECTE - What you have to do

• Penalty points for not participating!

• A practice seminar before the real seminar – Record your presentation and upload to YouTube – Critique the presentations of others – Read and consider the feedback given

Page 6: ENGG851 Student Lecture 09

ENGG851 – What you have to do

• Assessment marks for each component

• Presentation 10% • Critique other presentations 5% • Reflection on the feedback received 5%

Page 7: ENGG851 Student Lecture 09

• Stage One: Self Assessment • Cycle Through: Present – Record – Watch – Present – Record – Watch (as needed)

Page 8: ENGG851 Student Lecture 09

• Stage Two: The Assessments • Upload Video – Groups Formed – Evaluate Videos – Receive Feedback - Reflect

YouTube Video Assessed

Students Ability to Evaluate & Provide Feedback Assessed

Ability to Reflect Assessed

Page 9: ENGG851 Student Lecture 09

One Condition

• You can rerecord your presentation as many times as you like, BUT the submission to YouTube must be a continuous recording. If the video is edited, it is an automatic fail!!!!!!

• The point of the activity is to: – Present -> watch yourself -> present again (with

improvements -> watch yourself ……… until you feel comfortable and confident!!!!!

Page 10: ENGG851 Student Lecture 09

Make Sure

• You Do NOT Leave This Until The Last Minute – You can’t watch, fix and rerecord if you do – Have time to solve technology issues with YouTube,

uploading etc.

Page 11: ENGG851 Student Lecture 09

But why me?

• I am a great presenter, WHY do I need to do this?

• The weaker presenters will LEARN from watching your practise presentation

• You offer the most important feedback!

Page 12: ENGG851 Student Lecture 09

ECTE Students

• 10min YouTube video due Monday, Week 13

• Submission of peer feedback due Friday, Week 13

• Review feedback over the weekend

• Physical Presentation Week 14 (Stuvac)

Page 13: ENGG851 Student Lecture 09

ENGG851 students

• 10min YouTube video due Friday, Week 11

• Critique due Friday, Week 12

• Reflection due Friday, Week 13

• Then you have completed the subject and can spend Stuvac cramming for your other subjects!

Tip: Watch Previous Presentations

Page 15: ENGG851 Student Lecture 09

YouTube Upload • You can use the lecture theatre at the subjects

scheduled time • ENGG851 can use the scheduled tutorial time • Or any spare room you can find • Recording must show you presenting and in the

background your PowerPoint slides

• You must review your own performance via Spark+

Page 16: ENGG851 Student Lecture 09

How to Critique / Provide Feedback

• You will be put into groups to review the presentation of others

• You will be provide a link to the videos you must review

• You will provide feedback through Spark+

Select your subject and task

Page 19: ENGG851 Student Lecture 09

Rate yourself using the sliders next to each criterion WB = Well Below average, BA = Below Average, AV = Average, AA = Above Average, WA = Well above average

When You’re done, click save

Note: Demo only Parameters will be in relation to presentation

Page 20: ENGG851 Student Lecture 09

You can also add comments for each team member in these open text fields

Click save, then logout and you’re done!

Now repeat the ratings for each other group member. Remember: This is done separately by each group member

You must also provide feedback on what can be improved, what was good etc.

Ensure every criteria has a score for every speaker

Page 21: ENGG851 Student Lecture 09

What you will get

• Feedback comments from the group about how you can improve your presentation

• SAPA factor provides feedback about how the group perceived your performance. – SAPA factor > 1 student rated own performance

higher than they were rated by their peers. – SAPA factor < 1 student rated own performance lower

than they were rated by their peers.

What type of feedback to provide?

• Presentation style and delivery • Technical content, incl. introduction, order, and

material • Quality resources, diagrams, and other aids

• ENGG851: Ensure to use academic English!

Page 23: ENGG851 Student Lecture 09

Feedback examples

• Presentation style and delivery – You are putting too much information on your slides – You are using the word “Um” very frequently – For the information on slide 10, this could be

improved by replacing with a picture of a….. – I loved the way you balanced the information to keep

me engaged throughout the presentation

Page 24: ENGG851 Student Lecture 09

Feedback examples

• Technical content, incl. introduction, order, and material – I did not feel that I saw how your work fit in with

existing research. Please add more detail – You did not introduce your acronyms, as a result I did

not know what you were referring to – You positioned your work well. I discovered the

significance of your work through the intro.

Page 25: ENGG851 Student Lecture 09

Critique

• Both positive and negative feedback!

Page 26: ENGG851 Student Lecture 09

ENGG851 • To get the full 5% an example of the standard:

• This presentation was titled ”xxx”. Your presentation's introduction was very profound, the

way you simply stated the importance of your research set the ball rolling on a good note. You presented a strong argument in your determination of material selection for appropriate artificial implants. The texts and descriptive drawings presented on your slides were unclear. You may consider a different form of arranging information sequence as presented on your slides. For instance, the slide "materials applied in artificial implants" can come after "Bio-materials applied" and "Why need surface plasma treatment". Your general confidence and composure was constant throughout the presentation, it is quite commendable. However, you may consider different forms of tones and stresses in your voice patterns to reinforce salient point to your listeners. The technical content was adequately explained in a way someone without your technical background can understand. However, the slide stating "Plasma sprayed Hydroxyapatite (HA)coating" may be misconstrued as an ostentatious display of knowledge especially to individuals that are not conversant to your field, or in other word laymen and may pick interest in your research topic. Try to keep your explanations simple. Kindly try to keep to allotted time.

Final Thoughts

I hope you have gained a new appreciation of ‘what is research’
