Seatwork : Mechanical Properties of Metal

The following engineering stress-strain data were obtained at the beginning of a tensile test for a 0.2% C plain-carbon steel. (a) Plot the engineering stress-strain curve for these data. (b) Determine the modulus of elasticity of this steel (c) Determine the 0.2 percent offset yield strength for this steel (d ) Elastic limit (e) Ultimate tensile strength

Calculate the strain that will occur in a ½ in. diameter steel eyebolt that is

11 in. long when it carries a load of 2000 lb. The modulus of elasticity of

steel is 30 x 10 6 psi.

A load of 140,000 N is applied to a cylindrical specimen of a steel alloywith a cross sectional diameter of 10mm. (a) Will the specimen experienceelastic and/or plastic deformation ? Why (b) If the original specimen length Is 500 mm, how much will it increase in length when this load is applied .

A cylindrical aluminum specimen of diameter 1.28 cm and length 10 cm is loaded in tension to 10,000N. The yield strength of the metal is given

250 MPa and the modulus of elasticity is given to be 70 GPa. Under the condition of the force, compute the stress and the strain in the specimen.
