NOYS Overview

The National Organizations for Youth Safety (NOYS) includes federal agencies, nonprofits, and business and industry leaders who partner together to promote safe and healthy lifestyles among youth ages 13-21.

Examples of NOYS members: Ad Council The Allstate Foundation AT&T Business Professionals of America State Farm Toyota Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Center for the Prevention of Youth Suicide National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD)

NOYS Peer-to-Peer Programs

The National Organizations for Youth Safety is a coalition that empowers youth to lead in the field of youth safety. Examples of NOYS peer-to-peer programs: Act Out Loud Teen Distracted Driving Prevention Summit Seat Belts Save Reality Check Youth Correspondents: new this year!

NOYS Youth Correspondents

What is a NOYS Youth Correspondent? A youth (age 15-21) with a passion for encouraging his or her peers to make smart decisions, particularly in the areas of distracted driving prevention and youth-parent communication. A NOYS Youth Correspondent makes an eight-month commitment to share messages about distracted driving prevention with his or her peers, parents, and community.

NOYS Youth Correspondents

Program Overview

2014-2015: Pilot year program • Small group of engaged youth act as correspondents • Test and evaluate each program component • Provide valuable feedback • Have the opportunity to become a Youth Correspondent Advisor next year 2015-2016: Nationwide launch • Approximately 50 Youth Correspondents selected through an open, competitive application

process • Application process opens in April 2015 • Full nationwide program launches September 2015

Why: Because car crashes are the number one killer of youth in the U.S. Focus Area(s): Distracted driving, seat belt usage, passenger distractions Audience: Youth, Parents, Media Goals & Objectives • Raise awareness around youth safety • Build a small youth core of a grassroots network in support of youth safety • Improve youth-parent communication on issues related to distracted driving • Increase number of youth reached by distracted driving prevention messages • Obtain traditional and non-traditional media coverage of issues related to distracted driving

The Reid Hollister Fund will award one $2500 scholarship annually to a NOYS Youth Correspondent who demonstrates creativity, reach and impact in communicating with parents about safe driving practices and who effectively mobilizes other youth to engage in conversations with their parents/guardians about the importance of responsible driving. •Enhance your Resume. Enhance your resume by adding NOYS Youth Correspondent, a competitive communications and outreach position with a national organization. Gain valuable work experience and network with leaders in the fields of transportations safety and communications and marketing.

Participant Responsibilities • OUTREACH: School outreach, parent/guardian outreach, media outreach, use of social

media. • MESSAGE SHARING/CRAFTING: Sharing of messages via chosen distribution networks,

creatively customizing and sharing messages with new audiences and via existing and emerging platforms

• REPORTING/EVALUATION: Participation in monthly phone calls, submission of monthly reports, timely feedback and evaluation on program activities

Future Opportunities Beginning in 2015, a limited number of prior years’ Youth Correspondents will have the opportunity to apply for the role of Youth Correspondent Advisor. Youth Correspondents, upon successful completion of the program, are eligible for membership in the AlumNOYS Network and the Youth Correspondents Alumni Network.
