Engagement with school capturing bilingual parent voice
According to the DfE, parental engagement has a large and positive impact on childrens
learning. Want to find out more? Click HERE
Recent studies exploring bilingualism and school achievement have also highlighted the
value of parental engagement.
This document includes a parent voice questionnaire in 14 languages additional to English.
It provides schools with a mechanism for International New Arrival parents to:
Reflect on their ability to communicate with school;
Reflect on how well they feel school communicates with them;
Consider to what extent they feel school understands their child;
Share with school a number of the ways in which they are involved in their childs
learning.
Engagement cannot be merely measured via attendance at parents evenings, as it ignores
the diverse and complex involvement of parents in their childrens learning at home and the
assets and funds of knowledge available at home. (Gonzlez, Moll & Amanti, 2013)
The questionnaire is a first step in gathering parent voice and is not designed to replace
other, more in depth, methods.
