Camp CREATE Wraps Up Fantastic Month of Learning

Camp CREATE at Hardy Hopes Academy wrapped up a fantastic month of learning. Camp CREATE was the gifted/high ability portion of the summertime academy at Hardy Elementary. CREATE means creativity, rigor, enrichment, academics, technology, and engagement. The final day of camp began with the campers and their friends and family enjoying a breakfast courtesy of Huddle House. Next, the special guests took to the classroom for a Showcase of Learning where they viewed a video of moments from camp followed by students sharing what they had learned and created in a museum style exhibit. One of the camp leaders, Gifted Teacher Lindsey Glass, said, "These future chemists, chefs, musicians, instructors, editors, graphic web designers, doll engineers, magicians, social media engineers, geologists and video game designers really shined as they answered questions about their projects." The event concluded with certificates of excellence for each student for their hard work.

Registration Extended for Southeast Center for Education in the Arts Summer Learning Lab

Please join the Southeast Center for Education in the Arts at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (SCEA) on July 18-21, 2017 for our inaugural Arts Learning Lab (ALL) that provides classroom teachers, arts specialists, teaching artists, and administrators opportunities to strengthen arts-based teaching and learning through concept-based unit development.

As we share our process for unit planning, reflection, and delivery, participants are guided through a backward design process employing the center's approach to concept-based arts integration. ALL provides participants with continuing education credits administered by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (1 CEU credit = 10 contact hours).

Sunny Forecast for Daisy Elementary School’s Summer Slide Camp

The second week of Daisy Elementary School's Summer Slide Camp happens this week. The camp offers a chance for the upcoming first graders to review and maintain the skills they learned in kindergarten. The first week of Daisy Elementary's Summer Slide was the final week in June. This week, the campers are learning all about weather. After reading Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, the students made their own meatballs on Monday. Tuesday, they created hand-print sunshines and drew pictures of what they'd like to see fall from the sky (instead of meatballs.) The incoming first graders had all sort of great ideas, from chocolate to potato chips. Way to go Daisy Elementary Summer Slide campers!

Applied Mathematical Concepts Academy in Action at the Teacher’s Place

HCDE high school math teachers spent the first two days of the week putting mathematical concepts into use. The Applied Mathematical Concepts Academy workshop took place at the Teacher’s Place on Monday and Tuesday. The workshop focused on the standards and content within the new State Applied Mathematical Concepts Course. Participants took away Curriculum Guides and Resources to teach the new course.

HCDE Partnership Highlighted by Tennessee Stormwater Association

The Tennessee Stormwater Association will highlight a great leaning partnership between Hamilton County Water Quality Program and HCDE. The partnership will be highlighted in a future edition of the TNSA Times. In 2006, three Stormwater Programs started the partnership that has spread water education to teachers in multiple school systems throughout southeast Tennessee. This past June the Project WET Workshop took place at the Ocoee Whitewater Center. From Sparkling Water to Macroinvertebrate Mayhem, participants were trained on various aspects of watershed-focused activities that highlight how watershed stakeholders have, and will continue to, impact our watershed. The goal was to not only train the teachers in lessons that can be used in the classroom, but to give educators a real watershed experience and get their feet wet. After lunch, the participants were bussed to the Conasauga River for an afternoon of stream discovery which included snorkeling and stream wading. Hamilton County Water Quality Program Manager Crystal Bishop explained, “With the training of one teacher, Project WET curriculum has the capability of reaching exponential numbers of students in the traditional classroom setting. Teaching environmental responsibility and stewardship to future watershed stakeholders is paramount, and this Project Wet partnership is an innovative and resourceful way to engage the public in watershed education.”

HCDE Launches Literacy Links

New Ways to “Imagine” and “Dream Big” at Lookout Valley Elementary School

Muralist Gale Hinton was back at work at Lookout Valley Elementary School this summer. One hallway features the themes, “greatness begins here” and “follow your dreams.” The wall-sized murals feature several individuals from Chattanooga who have done great things and can be an inspiration to the students. (Senator Corker, Tamara Jernigan, Irvine Grote, Ed Westcott, Margaret Vaughn, S. David Freeman, and Bessie Smith.) It also features inspiring individuals like Harriett Tubman, Albert Einstein, Dr. Ben Carson, and Michelangelo. The opposite hallway is all about imagination and features quotes and pictures of characters from the Wizard of Oz, including a friendly frog guide who helps tell the pictures’ story. Ms. Hinton first painted a mural at LVES in the cafeteria, but more recently painted the Ben Carson Reading Room and school lobby. The Knoxville-area artist has also painted many murals for T.C. Thompson Children’s Hospital.

The Passage Stops by the Shepherd Center

The Passage took a trip to the Chattanooga Youth and Family Development Shepherd Center this week. The students got fun hands-on lessons in reading strategies and STEM. The Passage bus was stocked full of books and STEM toys just for the kids at the Shepherd Center, and volunteers from UTC’s Omega Phi Alpha chapter volunteered to work with the kids. Chattanooga’s Junior League even made sure the students each took home a book of their own.

Teacher Tech Prep at STEM School thanks to PEF and Dev Dev

HCDE teachers could learn more about the technology available for their classrooms during HCDE Teacher Tech Prep. PEF and Dev Dev funded the daylong professional development session at the STEM School Chattanooga. It featured breakout sessions across six different rooms, under the themes of ‘All Things Google,’ ‘Tech Savvy Classroom,’ ‘Computer Science,’ ‘Beyond the Device,’ with two additional rooms full of classes with varying tech-related topics. The STEM School commons area served as a playground of all-things tech. Teachers could drop by throughout the day and try their hands at coding, virtual reality, Spheros, Ozbots and other robots, making their own MakerSpace and other hands-on activities. HCDE educators lead the group discussions with topics like ‘Coding in the Elementary Grades,’ ‘50 Google Tools in 50 Minutes,’ and ‘I’ve heard about this Google thing, now how do I use it?’ Thank you to PEF, Dev Dev, and all of the HCDE educators who lead and attended discussions during the HCDE Teacher Tech Prep!

UTC STEM Education Collaborates with HCDE

UTC STEM Education spent the week collaborating with HCDE schools including Dalewood and Red Bank Middle Schools as well as Brown Academy. The goal is to provide every student with a true STEM experience. Thank you UTC School of Education!
