A Short Reflection

The following slide is a short reflection that shows you should never give up!!!

Good luck organising your work experience and don’t give up if you don’t get your first choice.

Reflection don’t give up

Many years ago a country miller discovered that his old donkey, that used to turn his mill, had somehow fallen down an abandoned village well. Although the animal cried pathetically for hours the miller decided that it simply wasn’t worth his while trying to rescue the old donkey. It would be much easier to buy a new one. The empty well had been unsafe for some time, and it was a miracle that some poor unthinking child hadn’t already met the same fate as the stranded donkey. This gave the miller an idea.He asked his friends and neighbours to help him to fill in the well and, in so doing, bury the donkey. It was, after all, the most practical thing to do. Each person got hold of a shovel and began shifting earth into the well. The donkey understood what was happening and whimpered dreadfully. Then, to everyone's surprise, he abruptly stopped his crying. It was as though the donkey had resigned himself to his terrible fate.Sometime later, the miller looked down the well. He was amazed at the sight that met him. When each shovelful of earth hit the donkey’s back, the beast did something incredible. He threw it off and then stepped up onto it.The people of the village continued to shovel dirt on top of the donkey, he continued to shake it off his back and take a step up. Eventually, an enormous amount of earth had been moved and the well was almost filled in. Then the donkey, much to the astonishment of the assembled crowd, stepped up over the edge of the well and happily jogged away!Throughout your life you are going to get earth shovelled onto you. The key to getting over this is to throw it off and use it to take a step up. Each of our troubles is a like a stepping stone. We can find our way out of the deepest wells just by not stopping, by never giving up!



Last week you received a lot of information about work experience.

You should have started to think about where you would like to carry out your

work experience.



This week you have the opportunity to use the tutorial time to write…

A letter of application to send to the companies where you would like to do

your work experience.



Perfection counts when writing letters for employment.

All your job search correspondence should be simple, concise, grammatically correct,

and error-free.

You will need to stand out from the crowd.



Top Tips for writing a letterfor Work Experience



Why should you include covering letters with your CV?

• Well, mainly because it looks more professional

• Also, it is a further opportunity to market yourself. You can put your skills and ambitions into a better context within your covering letters as they are more personal than your CV



Write simply and clearly.

Get right to the point and write short, focused letters.

Each letter should be one page, or less.

Each paragraph should contain three or four sentences, at most.



Do not use the same letter and send it to every potential employer you can find.

(you know what you do with junk mail!)

Your cover letter should be written specifically for each position you seek.



Keep copies of all your employment letters.

If you are applying for similar positions you can edit an existing letter rather than writing

a completely new one.



Remember to put all your contact details on it, along with the date it was sent out.

It should not repeat what is said in your CV. Use the covering letter to elaborate on details

that are only briefly covered in your CV.

When elaborating on your skills, you should both reflect on your own experience and

relate them to the skills asked for in the job you are applying for



Personalise your letter. If you can, address it to the individual responsible for hiring. If need be, research online or make a phone call to find out who the hiring manager is.

When closing the letter, finish with “Yours Sincerely” or “Kind Regards”.

Don't forget to sign your letter.



You now need to write a letter of application which will be suitable to send with your CV to companies where you are interested in attending a work experience placement.

Remember to give them the dates you are looking at attending.

Week beginning the 16th July 2012



During the session today you only need to write it up in rough.

Next week you will be putting together a CV and your group tutor will have a quick look

over your letters.

You will then have a couple of weeks to get everything typed up and then sent off.
