COMMUNICATION Theme Analysis for both Santiago and Hamlet’s characters. You will have one of the following themes on the exam. 1. Love- kinds of love 2. Family- conflicts within family systems 3. Internal Conflict- dilemma with the self 4. Action/Inaction- to do or not to do something 5. Morality/Immorality- sense of what is good and what is bad.

APPLICATION **This is the hardest park of the exam** Application of both Hamlet and The Alchemist; use of 3 given premise points; use of details & examples from both texts to prove overall points. TASK: Examine the theme of DESTINY/FATE in both Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist and William Shakespeare’s Hamlet using the given premise points below. Write one paragraph for each premise point AND use at least 2 key details from the texts (1 per character) as proofs to help prove your point. **Make sure you write an introductory paragraph with a clear and identifiable thesis statement.** **Use the following 3 premise points to frame your writing**

INTRODUCTION- Introduce topic, texts, authors, premises, thesis statement (5 marks )

PREMISE 1: Motivation in action — What motivated both Hamlet and Santiago? How did these motivations bring them their fates? Provide one detail for Hamlet and one for Santiago. (5 marks )

PREMISE 2: Support and Encouragement— What was the support system like for Hamlet and Santiago? Who understood them, helped them, guided them? Which is a healthier way of living/ managing conflict? How do their support/encouragement systems help with or create further problems that lead them to their fates? Provide one detail for Hamlet and one for Santiago. (5 marks )

PREMISE 3: Successful or Unsuccessful in their endeavour— Is Hamlet successful in what he wanted to do? Is Santiago successful in what he wanted to do? How do their fates end; tragically or happily? Why? What does one do correctly in order to secure a good and fulfilled fate, while the other a deadly and tragic one? Provide one detail for Hamlet and one for Santiago. (5 marks )
