    The animal is a topic of significant import for posthumanities. Thiscourse will look at certain writers regarding the animal, animalrights, and the industry of the animal.

    In order to establish some boundaries for this type of seminar, wewill look at what are the constraints of and for animals and humanexceptionalism. We will examine through theoretical and literaryreadings the topics of human and animal, queer and posthumanities,exceptionalism and politics in order to get some sort of handle onthis thing called the animal.

    Course requirements

    A fifteen-page paper (4500 words) (75%)Seminar presentation (15%)Seminar participation (which includes being responsible for

    class discussion in general and for a particular hour of

    Seminar PresentationsEach of you must make a research presentation based on your finalpaper on 8 December 2009. The presentation is approximately tenminutes (like a conference paper) followed by comments and discussion.

    Seminar ParticipationYou will have responsibility for discussion. The presentations will berelated to the readings of the day or will take up a topic encom-passingthe readings over several weeks. Remember, this is your time to workwith each other on topics of mutual interest. Evaluations will be basedon evidence, argument, and interest/ import.

    Fifteen-Page PaperEach of you will have to present a 4500-word paper by 9 December 2009

    on a topic approved for this class.
