Attendance: As class participation is very important in this course, students need to attend all the classes for their own benefit. Class participation and group works are graded. Students missing out more than seven classes in a semester will automatically receive a “W”(withdraw) in the course.

Make up classes and tests: If a regular class is not held for some unavoidable reasons like hartal, ijtema, undeclared holiday etc, the university announces a make up day for the same. Students, therefore, need to be in touch with the notice board and IUB website regularly. But if the instructor is unable to teach a class for some personal reason, s/he will let the students know through the Office Manager of the Department of English who will post a notice on the classroom door with make up schedule.

Teachers may also arrange one or two advance make up classes during the semester if s/he forecasts a class being missed in the future.

Read the following story about the students in a writing class. Underline the verbs which tell about habits( things they do again and again) or routines (things they do regularly) of the people in the class. Circle the verbs which tell about a lack of routine or habit. The first one has been done for you.

Writing is my favourite class because of my classmates. Even though they work hard to improve their writing, they

like to have fun too. Raul and Suzette study the hardest. They always listen carefully to the directions and raise

their hands when they have a question. They are good students and they try to help other students too. Jean Marc

also participates in class. He is good at finding mistakes. Before the rewrite my papers, I always take them to him.

There is only one student who doesn’t participate in class- Yaniv. He always interrupts students, eats and even

sleeps in class. Besides that, he never pays attention. The only time he writes is when he passes notes to Su-Ling.

He always teases her. Su-Ling is very shy and doesn’t know how to act towards him.

Exercise 2

Make statements of fact by connecting the people in the first column with the appropriate action in the second column. Then write the sentence on the lines below using the correct form of the verb. The first one has been done for you as an example.

A beautician count money

Artists deliver letters

Grammar Practice: Past Tense

Past tense is used in English to express:

Past events

24

Page 25: Eng 101 Text Revised

Imagined things, e,g.: He could get an A if he wanted.

Simple past with regular verb: He worked for 20 hours yesterday.

Simple past with irregular verb: The paper I made flew for quite a long time.

Be careful: Simple past is expressed with the past form of the verb and nothing else! For example,

Wrong: My grandfather was died last year.

Correct: My grandfather died last year.

Be very careful about: using double negatives with past tense. For example,

Wrong: I didn’t knew how to complete the assignment.

Correct: I didn’t know how to complete the assignment.

With most verbs the past tense is formed by adding -ed:

call >> called; like >> liked; want >> wanted; work >> worked

But there are also many irregular verbs in English.

Here’s a useful list: Irregular verbs Past forms

Home work: Read the following text and write down six questions with relevant answers taking

information from the text.

Chocolate!

The story of chocolate, as far back as we know it, begins with the discovery of America. Until 1492, the Old World

knew nothing at all about the delicious and stimulating flavor that was to become the favourite of millions.

The court of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella got its first look at the principal ingredient of chocolate when Columbus returned in triumph from America and laid before the Spanish throne a treasure trove of many strange and wonderful things. Among these were a few dark brown beans that looked like almonds and seemed most unpromising. They were cocoa beans, today’s source of all our chocolate and cocoa.

The King and Queen never dreamed how important cocoa beans could be, and it remained for Hernando Cortez, the great Spanish explorer, to grasp the commercial possibilities of the New World offerings.

During his conquest of Mexico, Cortez found the Aztec Indians using cocoa beans in the preparation of the royal drink of the realm, chocolatl, meaning warm liquid. In 1519, Emperor Montezuma, who reportedly drank 50 or more portions daily, served chocolatl to his Spanish guests in great golden goblets, treating it like a food for the gods.

For all its regal importance, however, Montezuma’s chocolatl was very bitter, and the Spaniards did not find it to their taste. To make the concoction more agreeable to Europeans, Cortez and his countrymen conceived of the idea of the sweetening it with cane sugar.

While they took chocolatl back to Spain, the idea found favour and the drink underwent several more changes with newly discovered spices, such as cinnamon and vanilla. Ultimately, someone decided the drink would taste better if served hot.

40

Page 41: Eng 101 Text Revised

The new drink won friends, especially among the Spanish aristocracy. Spain wisely proceeded to plant cocoa in its overseas colonies, which gave birth to a very profitable business. Remarkably enough, the Spanish succeeded in keeping the art of the cocoa industry a secret from the rest of Europe for nearly a hundred years.

Spanish monks, who had been given the responsibility of processing the cocoa beans, finally let the secret out. It did not take long before chocolate was popular throughout Europe as a delicious, health-giving food. For a while it reigned as the drink at the fashionable Court of France. Chocolate drinking spread across the Channel to Great Britain, and in 1657 the first of many famous English Chocolate Houses appeared.

The hand methods of manufacture used by small shops gave way in time to the mass production of chocolate. The transition was hastened by the advent of a perfected steam engine which mechanized the cocoa grinding process. By 1730, chocolate had dropped in price from three dollars or more per pound to within the financial reach of all. The invention of the cocoa press in 1828 reduced the prices even further and helped to improve the quality of the beverage by squeezing out the part of the cocoa butter, the fat that occurs naturally in cocoa beans. From then on, drinking chocolate had more of the smooth consistently and the pleasing flavor it has today.

The 19th century marked two more revolutionary developments in the history of chocolate. In 1847, an English company introduced solid “eating chocolate” through the development of fondant chocolate, a smooth and velvety variety that has almost completely replaced and old coarse-grained chocolate which formerly dominated the world market. The second development occurred in 1876 in Vevey, Switzerland, when Daniel Peter devised a way of adding milk to the chocolate, creating the product we enjoy today known as milk chocolate.

In the United States of America, the production of chocolate proceeded at a faster pace than anywhere else in the world. It was in New England in 1765 that the first chocolate factory was established.

During World War II, the U.S government recognized chocolate’s role in the nourishment and group spirit of the Allied Armed Forces, so much so that it allocated valuable shipping space for the import of cocoa beans. Many soldiers were thankful for the pocket chocolate bars which gave them the strength to carry on until more food rations could be obtained. Chocolate has even been taken into space as part of the diet of U.S astronauts.

Read this article carefully and answer the questions that follow.

Perfume—scent from heaven by Mara Creble

At a time when human and animal sacrifices to the ancient gods were common, some creative person probably suggested that scented wood or leaves be burnt to mask the sickly smell of burning flesh. The word "perfume", in fact, comes from the Latin per fumus, meaning "from smoke". It must have been a welcome relief for the audience at such events not to have to put up with the dreadful odours but little comfort for those being sacrificed. And so it was, in those ancient times, that perfume became part of the culture, and the beginnings of a new industry sprang to life.

In ancient Egypt, the use of scented ointments and cosmetics by wealthy members of society became popular. And to freshen up in the afterlife, the Pharaohs had vases of perfumed oils placed in their tombs. Centuries later, during the Middle Ages, Crusaders returning to Europe took back gifts of perfume for their loved ones and since those times the use of perfume has grown to such an extent that the industry is now worth a massive 30 billion dollars a year.

The creation of a top-class perfume is the result of a combination of clever chemistry and the art of the perfumer (perfume maker). With some 2,000 possible ingredients to draw upon, the blending process is a highly skilled and challenging task. In modern times both natural products and synthetic chemicals are used to blend the desired fragrances.

Fragrant, or essential, oils extracted from leaves, barks, resins and flowers form the bases for most perfumes. One method of extraction, which has been used since the 8th century, is distillation, in which separation and purification of the oils take place through a boiling-off process. Another common method known as cold pressing involves crushing and pressing the plant matter to release the oils. Oils can also be extracted with the use of chemical dissolving agents, or solvents.

A vast amount of plant material may be needed to produce relatively small quantities of essential oils, for example, it takes about 5 million jasmine flowers to produce 1 kg of jasmine concentrate—which has a value of about $55,000. And to make 1 kg of French rose concentrate, worth more than $7,000, about 800 kg of flowers are needed.

Unti l quite recently, certain animal products were considered essential ingredients in many perfumes. A key component in high-quality perfumes was a substance called ambergris. This is produced in the intestines of sperm whales and was supplied to the perfume industry by whalers. Though still available, the worldwide decline in whaling has made ambergris a very expensive ingredient.

Another animal product used in the making of perfume is musk. This oily secretion from glands on the abdomen of the musk deer has been considered a vital ingredient in perfume for centuries. Not only does it have its own distinctive scent but it has the effect of slowing down the loss of other fragrances in a perfume.

Then, of course, there is civet, the buttery substance milked from the anal glands of the civet cat, which—though not used as much as in the past – is still used in some of the more expensive fragrances. It would be interesting to know if the women who wear high-priced perfume know exactly what they dab on their skin. Fortunately, most animal products are no longer essential to the perfume industry as they can now be replaced with man-made alternatives.

62

Page 63: Eng 101 Text Revised

The development of a new perfume is an expensive and involved process but if successful, it has the potential to earn many millions of dollars. The size of the perfume industry demonstrates just how willing people are to spend big money on this luxury item. Perfume may have been used in ancient times to disguise the unpleasant odours of burning flesh but these days, thankfully, wearing perfume is more about creating a send of style and feeling good.

Bitten by the bug by Tony Hogins

I hitchhiked to Rome from England when I was s ixteen. In those days it was not so unusual for young people to set off on such a journey. Several friends had gone on the same trip the previous summer and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. I suppose as teenagers we'd all been seeking some sort of challenge or adventure, call it what you will, and that's exactly what we experienced. I'd say it was also around that time the travel bug bit and took hold.

To be honest, I can't recommend hitchhiking as a form of transport any more. It's not that there aren't decent, interesting, honest people still around but there are dust too many crazies out and about to risk personal safety in that way.

Even though I don't hitchhike now, I still travel whenever I can, searching out unique experiences. One recent adventure took me to Indonesia. After exploring some of the lesser-known towns and villages of lava, I made a journey from the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, to Singapore by sea. I bought a third-class ticket for the trip on a rusted boat that was leaving one Tuesday afternoon. The boat was already crowded when I arrived at the docks and as my ticket didn't include a cabin, I had to find a space to sleep on the deck with dozens of Indonesians returning to their homes and villages. It was a marvellous way to travel and being at sea was a welcome change from the heat and pollution and mosquitoes of the capital.

Food was limited—usually boiled fish and a green vegetable served with a spoonful of rice. It wasn’t the tastiest food but considering I was in third class, it was what I expected. It was there that I transferred to a powerful motorboat that was to speed me on the last leg of the journey to Singapore. Not long after leaving the island, I was served a giant orange prawn about the size of a small lobster. It sat on a bed of rice and the whole lot was wrapped in a green banana leaf. That meal was, in many ways, the highlight of the whole trip. It tasted so good after the dull food on the boat. The brilliant colours burnt a permanent place in my memory and even today I can conjure up a detailed photographic image of that meal.

To my way of th ink ing , i t seems a point less exerc ise to t rave l somewhere interesting and a little out of the way only to stay locked up in a fancy air-conditioned hotel watching videos and eating Western food, and to go sightseeing only from air-conditioned taxies or buses. Such a tourist may as well stay at home and not bother with the hassle of travelling, and believe me, at times there can be a lot of hassle.

Someone once said, "I disl ike feeling at home when I am abroad", and that's exactly what it's like for me. I love the raw experience of finding out about a new country or town and, just as importantly, I enjoy finding out about myself. After all these years the travel bug is still biting—oh, and by the way, I'm leaving for India next month.

Conversation 1

Here is a conversation between a tourist and a native(=person local to the area). The native is giving directions to the tourist to

find out a particular location. Read it carefully and perform the dialogue with your partner.

Duration : 15 mins.

Tourist: Excuse me, sir. I’m trying to find my way to the church that Frank Lloyd Wright designed. I forget the name of it but it’s

one of the most beautiful buildings in the city.

Native: Yes, I know the one you mean. You must be new in town. We get a lot of tourists asking where the church is. Are you

driving or taking public transportation?

Tourist: Today I’m taking buses. You’re right. I’m a tourist. I drove here yesterday and spent the day driving to all the sights but

today I’ve decided to go by bus.

Native: That’s good. It’s slower but you get to see more of the city by bus. First of all, you are on the wrong street. You have to

walk more than two blocks to Garvey Boulevard where you’ll catch the A 12 bus. Take it about a mile. When you pay the driver,

be sure to ask for a transfer, you’ll need it. Get off the bus at Prescott Avenue and transfer to the n 16 bus going North.

Tourist: May be I should write all these things down. I don’t want to get lost. Let’s see. That’s the A 12 to Prescott, then transfer

to N 16 going north.

Native: Right. Ask the last driver to let you off at Valley road. The church you are looking for is only a short walk from there. You

can’t miss it.

Tourist: Thanks. I appreciate your help.

Second native: Young man, I couldn’t help overhear your conversation with the man who gave you directions.

Tourist: Yes, sir.

Second native: I think he must be confused because the direction he gave you was all wrong! If you follow that, you will have a

lovely ride but you will turn up at the zoo!

Tourist: No kidding! What should I do then?

Page 101: Eng 101 Text Revised

Second Native: Walk with me. I am heading in the direction where you will be able to catch the bus you want. Where are you

from? I can’t get your accent.

Tourist: I’m from Lima, Peru. That’s in South America. This is my first visit to the States. And I want to see as many sights as I can.

Second native: I have never been to your country. The farthest south I have ever been to is Mexico City. Well, here we are.. This

is the corner of Wall Drive and Utley Street and here’s your bus stop. Take the S- 1 which will stop right where we are standing,

down to the lake. The bus will turn right but you should get off and cross the street. It’s called Shore Lane.

Tourist: And where’s that Frank Lloyd Wright church ?

Second native: No. You will see another bus stop with a sign like this one. All the bus stops here have the same bright colored

signs, so they are easy to spot. Transfer there to the T-2 going south. The end of the line for T-2 is just across the street from your

church. The whole ride shouldn’t take you any more than 30 minutes.

Tourist: Thank you. I am glad that you set me straight. It would be easy to get lost in a town so big!

Second native: It’s not difficult to find your way around if you have a good map of the city. I suggest that you should buy one. If

you study that map, you will find out how easy it is.

Tourist: Is that my bus coming down the street now?

Second Native: Yes, it is. I hope you have the correct change with you.

Tourist: Why? Won’t the driver make change for me?

Second Native: No, not these days. In old days, they used to but now they want only the exact change.

Tourist: Oh, I see. Okay then. Thanks again. Bye.

Second native. Bye. Enjoy your stay here.

Jerry wants to visit the Great Wall, so he asks Fay for some suggestions

Jerry: Fay, I've heard it said that you are not a "true man" until you've stood on the Great Wall. I'd like to visit the Wall this weekend. Do you know how I can get there?

Fay: There are two ways to go there. You could go there directly by bus or train, or you could join a group tour.

Jerry: Is one way better than the other?

Fay: Going with a group is certainly more convenient. Everything is taken care of for you, including lunch and tickets to places of interest along the way. It usually costs around 100 RMB.

Jerry: That sounds like a good deal.

Fay: On the other hand, if you go directly, you won't stop along the way, which means you can spend more time at the Wall itself. It's also cheaper.

Jerry: Well, I like to go off on my own. I think going directly would be better for me. Do you know how I can get there?

Fay: I've heard the cheapest way is by minibus number 919, which you can catch near the Jishuitan subway station. It costs only 10 yuan! There's also a train which starts on the west side of the city which goes directly to the Wall, but I've never taken it. I know there's a small station outside the west gate of Beijing Aeronautics University. You could go there and ask around.

Jerry: That's very close to where I live, so I'll check it out! By the way, have you ever been to the Great Wall?

Fay: Yes, I have. It was VERY impressive! Not only is it so long, but I was surprised at how steep the steps are. It's almost like climbing a mountain! The scenery from the wall is quite spectacular. Looking out from the Wall, you can really get a sense of history.

Jerry: Great! I'm really looking forward to it. So Fay, since you've been to the Great Wall, you are a "true man", right?

Fay: Yes, now I drink lots of beer and even smoke cigars!

Jerry: Really?!?

Fay: Of course not, I'm just kidding!

Fei is helping Jerry decide what gifts to give to his family back home

Fei: Hi Jerry. Jerry? Oh, Jerry!!

Jerry: Oh, hi Fei. I didn't hear you approaching.

Fei: You were really lost in thought. Or were you sleeping?

Jerry: No, I wasn't sleeping, just thinking.

Fei: About what?

Jerry: Well, I'll be going back home to visit my family for a couple of weeks.

Fei: That's great. It's been a while since you've seen them, hasn't it? Jerry: Yes, it's been quite a while.

Fei: So, you must be thinking about how happy you'll be to see them again.

Jerry: Yes, that's true. But I'm also thinking about what kinds of gifts I should bring back from China for everyone - my brother, my sister, her husband and daughter, and of course, for my parents.

Fei: Of course, you want to bring back some traditional things. How about some Chinese kites?

Jerry: Hey, that's a good idea! You and I had a lot of fun flying kites together. I'm sure my niece would get a kick out of flying a Chinese-style kites too.

Fei: And maybe you could bring back some masks from the Beijing Opera.

Jerry: Fei, you're a genius! Beijing Opera masks are not only very colorful, they're very exotic too! My parents will really like them. Okay, now I have to think of something to buy my sister. That's a tough one!

Fei: Don't be so pessimistic, Jerry. Does she like exotic fashions? Maybe you could bring back a qipao, a traditional Chinese dress.

Jerry: Of course! Another great idea! How do you think of these ideas so easily, Fei?

Fei: Hey, you said it before... I'm a genius! Ha ha ha.

Jerry: Okay, now the toughest people to shop for - my brother and my sister's husband. What in the world could I bring back for them?

Fei: Didn't you tell me that your brother is studying Chinese now?

Jerry: Yes, that's right. He hopes to come to China after he graduates from university.

Fei: So why not buy him a DVD so that he can watch a movie in Chinese?

Jerry: Sure, he'd love that. He's crazy about kung fu movies, so he can have fun and learn at the same time! You amaze me, Fei.

Page 105: Eng 101 Text Revised

Fei: Geniuses will do that! Okay, now for your brother-in-law. I think you're on your own there!

Jerry: Well, I could just get him a "I've been to the Great Wall" t-shirt.

Fei: Or maybe he'd like a Chinese kite too. Or maybe a kung fu DVD.

Jerry: Right, or maybe a qipao!

Fei: That's a silly idea!!

Jerry: Yes, you're right. He's much too fat to wear a qipao!

Conversation 4

Fay asks Jerry for advice on how to succeed at a job interview in English

Fay: Hi Jerry. I'm thinking of applying for a job with a multinational company, but I'm worried about having an interview in English. Can you give me any good tips?

Jerry: Hmmm. That's a tough one. I guess the first thing is to try to make a good impression. We often say, "you never get a second chance to make a first impression". You really need to get off to a good start.

Fay: That sounds like good advice. Maybe I could sing and dance for them, ha ha ha! Then they'd really be impressed! But seriously, how do I make a good first impression?

Jerry: To begin with, you should firmly shake the interviewer's hand while greeting him or her with a smile. Be sure to keep eye contact, especially when listening to the interviewer.

Fay: Ah, "body language" is really important, isn't it?

Jerry: Yes, it is. The second thing is to have confidence. You get confidence from being prepared. You should learn a little bit about the company before the interview. Find out what they do, how long they've been in business, what their business motto is, that kind of thing. You should also anticipate possible questions, and think about how you will answer.

Fay: Should I memorize my answers beforehand?

Jerry: No! Definitely not! That sounds very mechanical. You should be natural when you speak. Just think about how you want to answer, and choose the right words at the time of the interview. That way, you can use the interviewer's own words in your answer, which shows you've been listening. Then you're sure to make a good impression.

Fay: I never thought about that before. You're really smart, Jerry! But what should I do if I can't remember an English word when I'm answering a question?

Jerry: In that case, you have to paraphrase. In other words, you have to explain what you want to say. For example, if you forget the word "manufacturing", you can say "making a product" instead. Or instead of "statistics" you could say "using many big numbers to describe something".

Page 106: Eng 101 Text Revised

Fay: That's very helpful, Jerry. Thanks so much. Ah, one more thing. Should I ask about the salary during the interview?

Jerry: No, either let them bring up the topic of money, or else wait for a second interview. If you prepare well, make a good first impression, have confidence, and use English naturally, you're almost certain to be interviewed again. Good luck!

Conversation 5

Fay asks Jerry about his plans for the summer and is a bit surprised. Fay: Hi Jerry. The school year is almost over. Do you have any plans for the summer holiday?

Jerry: I'm planning on sleeping all day, every day!

Fay: Oh, come on Jerry, you must be kidding.

Jerry: Yeah, I'm just pulling your leg. Actually, I'm going to go down to Guizhou Province.

Fay: Really? Why would you go to Guizhou? It's not a very popular tourist site.

Jerry: Exactly! It's not very popular, so it won't be too crowded. I enjoyed my trip to the Great Wall, but there were so many people there. I think it spoiled the atmosphere a bit.

Fay: I'm sure Guizhou won't be so crowded. But won't it be too hot in the summer?

Jerry: No, according to one of my students, it's very cool in the summer. He said it is "naturally air conditioned".

Fay: Well, that sounds good. I wouldn't mind getting away from the Beijing heat myself. Still, I wonder... is there anything worth seeing in Guizhou?

Jerry: Sure! For one thing, there's the beautiful natural scenery. I'm sure you've heard of the Huang Guo Shu Waterfalls. There's also the Maling Gorge which is said to be spectacular. There are mountains everywhere in Guizhou, even in the capital city of Guiyang.

Fay: Yes, I have heard of Huang Guo Shu Pubu, but won't you get bored just looking at the scenery?

Jerry: Come on Fay, there's lots of things to do. I can go hiking in Qian Ling Park in Guiyang, visit Miao villages in the southeast, and I know you've heard of Zunyi, a very historical city. It's where Mao Ze Dong first became the leader of the Red Army.

Fay: Gee, when you describe it like that, it sounds really interesting!

Jerry: And that's not all. I'll be able to eat very delicious, spicy food, drink world-famous maotai, and my student told me I can meet some very beautiful women there!

Fay: I'm sure you'll have fun Jerry, but let me give you some advice. Be sure to hold onto your wallet AND your heart!

Page 107: Eng 101 Text Revised

Jerry: We'll see what happens!

Fay: Do you have a place to stay in Guizhou?

Jerry: Yes, I'm very lucky. My student's sister is the manager of the Guizhou Park Hotel, the best hotel in the province. I've seen some pictures on the Internet, it's really nice! But I think outside Guiyang, I'll stay in a Miao village or maybe buy a tent and go camping.

Fay: That's great, Jerry. I'm looking forward to seeing your photos when you get back.

English Conversation 6

Jerry and Fei are comparing Christmas customs in New York and Beijing Jerry: Look, Fei! I got a Christmas card from my sister.

Fei: It's very beautiful. Why are the words "Happy Holidays" written on the card? Christmas is only one holiday. Shouldn't it be "Happy Holiday", without the "s"?

Jerry: We don't just celebrate Christmas during this season. We also celebrate the coming of the New Year.

Fei: Oh, I never thought about that before. There's more than one holiday at the end of the year.

Jerry: Now that I'm in China, I want to celebrate the holidays Chinese-style. What do you and your family do for Christmas?

Fei: Actually, we don't do much at Christmas. It's not really a big family holiday. Young people in China would rather spend Christmas Eve with their boyfriends or girlfriends.

Jerry: So is it something like a date night?

Fei: Yes, I guess you could say that. Christmas Eve is special, but we don't usually have any special plans for Christmas Day.

Jerry: Don't people give gifts to each other like they do in the U.S.?

Fei: Many parents do give gifts to their kids. But more importanly, boyfriends give wonderful, special, romantic gifts to their girlfriends!

Jerry: I see. How about the New Year in China. Is it a bigger holiday than Christmas?

Fei: Not really. We don't celebrate it because the Spring Festival is much more important to us here in China.

Jerry: The Spring Festival is known around the world as "Chinese New Year". It's the beginning of the year according to the traditional lunar calendar, isn't it?

Page 108: Eng 101 Text Revised

Fei: That's right. The Spring Festival is the biggest family holiday in China, so we don't celebrate the western New Year. How about in New York? Do people celebrate New Year's Eve more or New Year's Day?

Jerry: There are two kinds of people who celebrate quite differently. Single people, or couples without children, often go out late on New Year's Eve. They drink and party after the clock strikes midnight. There are big parties all over, but the biggest is in Times Square in Manhattan.

Fei: I guess they won't have much energy left over to do anything on New Year's Day, then.

Jerry: Right. But there are families who don't do anything special on New Year's Eve. Instead, they celebrate with their families on New Year's Day.

Fei: What do they do on New Year's Day?

Jerry: They have a big meal to celebrate and often watch parades in the big cities. The parades are quite spectacular.

Fei: It sounds a little bit like our traditional Lion Dance.

Jerry: Yes, it's a lot like the Lion Dance, except there is no lion!

B: Does the internet come up at all?

A: It does, but it won't connect to anything.

SEVEN MODERN WONDERS OF THE WORLD

The Panama Canal, begun in 1880’s, wasn’t finished until 1914. It joins the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans. Engineers describe the canal as a victory of humans over geography. Workers dug huge amounts of land and tamed rivers.

For 40 years after it was completed in 1931, The Empire State Building, in New York City, was the tallest building in the world. Amazingly, this 102 story building was constructed in just 410 days.

The Netherlands North Sea Protection Works is another victory over geography. The Netherlands, which is below sea-level, was often flooded by the North sea and by rivers. Then, between 1927 and 1932, a dam was built to shut out the sea. Twenty years later, dams and canals were built to control the rivers.

The Golden Gate Bridge, completed in 1937, was also a challenge for the workers: San Francisco Bay in the USA has very strong winds and rough waves. The Golden Gate is still the world’s tallest bridge. It has enough steel to wrap around the world three times!

At 1815 feet, the CN Tower, in Toronto, Canada is one of the world’s tallest free standing buildings. Completed in 1976, the tower is used for TV and Radio broadcasting.

The Itaipu Dam, completed in 1984, goes across the Parana River at the Brazil-Paraguay border. It is the world’s largest hydro-electric plant.

Completed in 1994, the Channel Tunnel joins France and England. The Channel is a remarkable convenience: cars, buses and trucks all are carried through the tunnel by train.
