The hallmark of a good school is distinguished by its ethos, values, expectations and standards.

We are confident that your son will get the excellent education he deserves at Enfield Grammar.

Enfield Grammar School has provided educational opportunities for local boys since 1558. Our school motto, ‘Tant que je puis’ reflects the aspirations of the entire School: its governors, members of staff, parents and especially the boys themselves. Throughout its distinguished history, the ethos of the School has continued unchanged.

Ours aims are to uphold high standards of achievement; provide opportunities for all boys to succeed and to encourage a set of personal values based on honesty, trust, tolerance and respect for others.

Today, the School has over 1100 pupils. Very good exam results, high standards of behaviour and excellent extra-curricular opportunities have all contributed to its popularity in the locality.

The School’s reputation is exceptionally good, not least because of the polite, well-mannered and respectful behaviour inculcated in the boys as part of their personal and social development. Enfield Grammar boys leave the School able to make a positive, enduring and invaluable contribution to society.

personal values… honesty, trust, tolerance and respect for others

Parents want to feel reassured that the school their son attends will care for him, value him as an individual, support him when he needs it and challenge him to excel in everything he does.

We provide:A committed and hardworking staff

Enfield Grammar School

The Upper and Lower School occupy historic Enfield buildings.

The Upper School, for pupils in years 9 to 13, provides specialist areas for the sciences and art as well as three dedicated computer rooms and a library. Its impressive Main Hall affords excellent facilities for dramatic and musical events as well as hosting daily assemblies. The large sports hall is a key feature and provides opportunities for all to engage in a wide variety of sporting activities.

The Lower School, for pupils in years 7 and 8, allows boys an easier transition from primary to secondary school. Its extensive grounds ensure that the school has excellent outdoor sporting facilities to support a wide range of team games including athletics, cricket, football, rugby and tennis.

It also houses the music suite, with specialist practice rooms, its own library and a dedicated computer room. The modern technology block is in a contemporary building, designed to complement the unique features of Enfield Court. A City Learning Centre opened on this site in July 2005.

The original Tudor school in the Market Place, opposite St Andrew’s Church, is one of the oldest buildings in Enfield and is an integral part of our Upper School. The Lower School occupies Enfield Court - a listed 17th century building set in its own grounds.

We provide:Creative, responsive and effective approaches to teaching and learning

A high standard of educationGood teaching is essential if high standards are to be achieved. Enfield Grammar School benefits from an experienced and stable staff. We have been extremely fortunate to retain the services of many gifted and talented teachers who give freely of their time to support our extensive extra-curricular programme. There is a strong commitment to staff training and, in recognition of such, the School has been accredited with the Investors in People award, after rigorous independent assessment, since 1999.

We believe that teaching styles and pupil groupings should vary to reflect the subject matter and the level of ability of the pupils. Setting is practised in subjects such as mathematics. Boys are also taught in wider ability bands for some subjects, including English and there are mixed ability groupings in, for example, art, music and design technology.

Regular assessment and continuous monitoring are fundamental to pupil progress. We attach great importance to the marking of work. Individual subject teachers, heads of departments and year managers, monitor pupil progress.

Form tutors are the first point of contact for the pupils. They counsel their tutees on a regular basis and conduct regular pupil/tutor reviews.

Our EthosTo ensure that Enfield Grammar School continues to meet its aims,we place a high priority on the following aspects of daily school life:

We provide:An expectation of high standards of behaviour and attendance

Enfield Grammar School

The learning environment The School does not tolerate behaviour that disrupts the education of others and it will not countenance actions that lead to intimidation or bullying. All members of the School are expected to adhere to our code of conduct.

In contrast, we believe that young people respond better to praise rather than blame and to rewards rather than sanctions, so there is an atmosphere of encouragement in the classroom and boys are rewarded for good work and behaviour. We work very hard to ensure that we meet the needs of all students in our care.

Every Child MattersOur pastoral care system, learning mentors and our learning support unit enables the School to provide a wide range of pastoral support to pupils who experience difficulties for either a short or longer term.

Special Educational NeedsThe School follows the Revised Code of Practice for Special Educational Needs and our learning support department caters for a range of individual needs, including those of ‘statemented’ pupils.

Gifted and Talented ProvisionWe are committed to nurturing the abilities of pupils designated as gifted and talented. Motivating and challenging work is provided across the curriculum and a series of extra-curricular activities are arranged after school and during the holidays.

Pupils, both in and out of lessons are challenged to think for themselves and grow in confidence, both creatively and academically.

We are currently working towards achieving the NACE Challenge Award (the National Association for Able Children in Education) as part of our commitment to excellence.”

Always striving for excellence

We strive to provide a positive, secure environment for our pupils. The development of self-discipline, courteous behaviour and respect for others are absolute priorities.

We provide:A close partnership with parents and carers to support and improve student achievement and personal development

Partnership with homeWe place a strong emphasis on the importance of an effective partnership between home and school.

We believe that learning at home is an essential part of a good education. Homework not only reinforces what has been learned at school but also helps young people to develop the skills they will need for lifelong learning including, for example, independent inquiry and investigation.

PresentationAll pupils, including Sixth Form students, are expected to wear the School’s distinctive uniform. We attach importance to the way in which the boys present themselves. We believe this encourages individuals to be proud of themselves as well as showing a pride in their school.

Post - 16Our Sixth Form offers a wide range of courses and students receive guidance during Year 11 to help them choose appropriate combinations of qualifications. We also provide students in the Sixth Form with a variety of extension courses and enrichment activities. We collaborate with other Sixth Form centres in the borough in order to maximise our post-16 offer.

We endeavour to provide stimulating and varied learning experiences in order to motivate and engage students. They are encouraged to be actively involved in lessons and to become more independent learners.

We expect 100% effort from our boys at all times, in whatever they do.

Our Home/School agreement identifies clearly the ways in which parents can best work with us to help develop their son’s full potential.
