  • Last Monday, David Kang, Professor ofInternational Relations and Business andSatoko Shimazaki, Associate Professor of EastAsian Languages and Cultures led the PublicSpeaking - Presentation workshop. This sessionfocused on presentation of academic work insettings, such as conferences, job talks, etc.and addressed concerns for both native andnon-native English speakers.     This was the last session of the fall semester Graduate Professionalization Series, which willreturn in the spring semester with three more sessions.

    The fourth Joint Consortia National Dissertation Workshop on “Contemporary East Asia” at theUniversity of Southern California on May 18, 2018.     Applicants must be enrolled full-time in a doctoral program and must have begun to draft adissertation, although they need not have advanced to candidacy. All doctoral students whosearea of research falls within Contemporary East Asia are encouraged to apply. Participants arerequired to fund their own travel to USC, as well as some meals.     Call for Abstracts The Ancient Borderlands Research Focus Group at the University of California, Santa Barbarainvites graduate students of any discipline and any period to submit abstracts for papersaddressing the theme of Beyond Marginality: Race, Ethnicity, and Memory. The 2018Borderlands International Graduate Student Conference seeks papers that address howinteractions in the borderlands may be framed through constructs of race, ethnicity, andmemory. The conference seeks to include a wide range of perspectives and methodologiesacross disciplinary boundaries, in any geographic region or historical period.
