The Former Members “The Former Members”. Self Production 2013. Una banda donde todos sus músicos son unos auténticos veteranos, con más de cuarenta años metidos en el negocio. Tanto Bruce como Roy, David y Greg han estado colaborando en un montón de historias diferentes y paralelas entre sí. Producciones de teatro, literatura, presentaciones musicales y, naturalmente, grabaciones y actuaciones en directo cada uno con sus respectivos grupos, entre los que cabe destacar a Country Joe & the Fish, Blues Project y Steve Miller Band, mucho antes de dar forma a este nuevo proyecto que es el grupo The Former Members. En esta formación se les puede escuchar dando rienda suelta a sus pasiones y pulsiones musicales, interpretando una amplia variedad de estilos muy bien combinados entre sí como son el blues, el country, el jazz y el gospel. Todos estos géneros los interpretan con chispa y habilidad, haciendo que todo ello se convierta en una entretenida y sofisticada muestra musical para deleite de oídos selectos pero no sectarios. La banda está formada por Bruce Barthol bajo y voz, Roy Blumenfeld batería y voz, David Bennett Cohen piano, guitarra acústica y voz y Greg Douglass guitarra y voz. MUY BUENO. This is a band where all the musicians are real veterans, with more than forty years into the music business. Bruce Roy, David and Greg have been collaborating in lots of different but at the same time quite similar stories. They have done theatre or literature productions, musical performances and, of course, recordings, live shows and venues with their own bands, such as Country Joe & the Fish, Blues Project and Steve Miller Band. That was the past and now they have join forces to create a new band they have called it The Former Members, where they give free rein to their passionate musical feelings, on a wide variety of well matched styles like blues, country, jazz and gospel. They have got a clever catching skill to perform them so the final result is nothing than an entertaining sophisticated musical show, perfect for selected but non-sectarian ears. The musicians who form the band are Bruce Barthol bass and vocals, Roy Blumenfeld drums and vocals, David Bennett Cohen piano, acoustic guitar and voice and finally Greg Douglass guitar and voice. VERY GOOD.

Gabriel Delta “Brothers”. Banksville 2013. Un cantante, guitarrista y compositor de blues argentino afincado en Italua que sabe muy bien las teclas que debe tocar para exponer con buen criterio su discurso interpretativo. Gabriel Delta es un guitarrista versátil con un amplio conocimiento del género que interpreta. Podríamos decir que el blues corre por sus venas, al igual que el alcohol lo hace por las venas de un borracho. Si queréis disfrutar de un puñado de blues descarnados y desgarrados, no dudéis de que con este álbum lo váis a conseguir con la total garantía de sentirse satisfecho de haber adquirido este cd titulado “Brothers”. Diez canciones vibrantes, bien interpretadas y desarrolladas con gusto y sobriedad, donde Gabriel Delta canta y toca la guitarra, mientras Paolo Baltaro se encarga del bajo, Fernando Trombetta de la batería y la percusión y finalmente Roby Padox está al piano, Hammond y otros teclados. Asimismo cabe mencionar la excelente labor de los

‘vientos’ a cargo de The Magic Horns en algunos temas, y la intervención de Marco Colaci a la armónica. La banda demuestra tener audacia y ganas de no contenerse en su exposición sonora, vehiculando su música con gusto y mucha pericia. MUY BUENO. Gabriel Delta is an Angentinian blues singer, guitarist and song-writer now settled in Italy. He knows very well what he has to do to give us a good approach to his performing qualities. In fact, he is a versatile guitarist with a broad knowledge of the music he plays. I dare say blues runs through his veins, like alcohol runs in the veins of a drunken man. If you want to enjoy a handful of hard heartbreaking blues, do not hesitate because real deep feeling is guaranteed and you will certainly be satisfied if you get a copy of this last cd entitled “Brothers”. Ten vibrant, well conceived good developed songs, performed on a restrained tasteful way, where Gabriel Delta sings and plays guitar, while Paolo Baltaro is on bass, Fernando Trombetta drums and percussion and, finally, Roby Padox, piano, Hammond and other keyboards. Also mention the excellent horn section work by The Magic Horns in some topics and Marco Colaci’s harmonica playing. The band proves they are a brave ambitious one with the only purpose to show all their music abilities through a delicious expertise sound speech. GREAT.

Roomful Of Blues “45 Live”. Alligator / Discmedi 2013. A pesar de los cambios en la formación y como ya nos tiene acostumbrados desde hace más de treinta años, The Roomful of Blues no dejan nunca de sorprendernos con su música, su arte, el repertorio que escogen y el sonido que transmiten en sus actuaciones y en sus discos, que es siempre magnífico y bien estudiado. Musicalmente todo está cuidado hasta el último milímetro y la comunión con la audiencia y el oyente es de intima y perfecta sintonía. Para este nuevo trabajo han escogido catorce temas, que van desde el más genuino swing de los cuarenta, hasta delicadas baladas de blues, jump blues y rock ‘n’ roll de los cincuenta, para desembocar todo ello en apasionados shuffles y entusiasta rhythm and blues de New Orleans, como en el clásico “Jambalaya”, donde Rich Lataille se luce con un gratificante solo de clarinete y Doug Woolverton de trompeta. Actualmente The Roomful of Blues está formada por Phil Pembertos a la voz, Chris Vachon guitarra, Mark Earley saxos tenor y barítono, Rich Lataille saxos tenor, alto y clarinete, Doug Woolverton trompeta, John Turner bajo, Rusty Scott teclados y Chris Rivelli batería. Una selección de temas variados y sumamente cuidados con un sonido impecable, limpio y completamente equilibrado. MUY BUENO. Like it has been usual for more then thirty years and despite different musicians changes, The Roomful of Blues always surprise us with their music, their amazing artistic qualities, the songs they have chosen in the repertoire, and the magnificent sound they give us both in their recordings and in their live shows. Musically speaking, everything has been carefully studied until the last details to get a complete harmonious communion with the whole audience. Richard Ray Farrell “Caleta Rock”. Cambayá / Karonte 2013. El bueno de Richard Ray Farrell viaja a las raíces del blues con un disco lleno de notables y oscuras versiones de algunos de los más grandes del género de preguerra y postguerra, como Blind Lemon Jefferson, Big Bill Broonzy, Robert Johnson, Blind Boy Fuller, Memphis Slim, Lowell Fulson y algunos otros. Con el único acompañamiento de su voz, su guitarra acústica y la armónica, Richard va desgranando canciones con gusto, pasión y soltura, empezando con una versión impagable de “Let’s Get Drunk Again” de Bo Carter, que no puede ser interpretada de mejor manera, aparte, por supuesto, de la versión del gran Sam Chatmon, a quien siempre he admirado y venerado, y la original de su hermanastro Bo Carter. El disco fue grabado por Richard Ray Farell en un concierto que realizó en noviembre del 2011 en el Cambayá Club, y es el undécimo álbum que graba en su carrera. Good old Richard Ray Farrell drives us to deep blues roots with an album full of remarkable dark versions of some of best pre-war and post-war bluesmen, like Blind Lemon Jefferson, Big Bill Broonzy, Robert Johnson, Blind Boy Fuller, Memphis Slim or Lowell Fulson among others. Only with his voice, his acoustic guitar and harmonica, Richard displays his songs with great taste, passion and looseness. The first cut is a terrific version of Bo Carter’s "Let's Get Drunk Again", the best one I have heard till now with the exception of Sam Chatmon’s one -a musician I have always admired and venerated-, and the original one coming from his stepbrother Bo Carter. Richard Ray Farrell recorded this album during a show at Cambayá Club in November 2011. This is the eleventh album of his career and old blues lovers will really enjoy such a genuine record that goes straight to the heart, done by a musician who deeply loves Spain called Richard Ray Farrell. Smiling Jack Smith & Antonio Toledo “At Cambayá Club”. Cambayá / Karonte 2013. Aunque pueda parecer un tipo huraño y hosco, Smiling Jack Smith es un hombre dotado de una enorme sensibilidad y buen gusto. Así nos lo hace notar en este álbum grabado en directo y compartido con Antonio Toledo a la guitarra acústica. Un total de diecisiete canciones cantadas y compuestas por Jack, quien asimismo toca la guitarra acústica. Ambos músicos se entrelazan con habilidad y buena comunicación, dando como resultado un disco redondo de folk-blues acústico, bien vertebrado y firmemente aposentado en unos sólidos cimientos para nada frágiles ni endebles. Smiling Jack Smith es un ‘story teller’ de mucho calibre y sus historias son de lo más entretenidas, sin

caer nunca en el aburrimiento o la vulgaridad. Una curiosa y buena combinación la de estos dos músicos, por una parte el canadiense afincado en España Smiling Jack Smith está dotado de una fina sensibilidad para el folk y por otro lado Antonio Toledo es un gaditano aficionado a tocar jazz y tanguillos de Cádiz. Una mezcla explosiva para un álbum sincero y exportable. MUY BUENO. Although he may seem a rough unsociable man, Smiling Jack Smith has an enormous sensitivity and a very good taste for music, which can be immediately seen in this album recorded live together with Antonio Toledo on acoustic guitar. The cd includes seventeen own songs, where Jack sings and also plays acoustic guitar. Both musicians perform with skill and good communication between them, to round up an acoustic folk blues album, firmly based in solid foundations that never break up. Smiling Jack Smith is an amazing story-teller and his stories always catch wide audiences, because they never fall into boredom or vulgarity. This is a curious good combination of two very different musicians. On one side Smiling Jack Smith, born in Canada but now settled in Spain, gifted with a fine sensitivity to play folk music and, on the other side, Antonio Toledo, who comes from Cádiz and usually plays jazz and “flamenco tanguillos of Cadiz”. This is an explosive mixture to produce an honest exportable album. GREAT.

Tom Lardner & Allfreedom “At Cambayá Club”. Cambayá / Karonte 2013. Nuevo álbum acústico de la factoría Cambayá/Karonte. En esta ocasión el dúo está formado por la voz y la guitarra del americano afincado en España, Tom Lardner, respaldado por el armonicista Allfreedom. No se trata de un disco puramente de blues sino que hay una buena muestra de otros estilos, como son el folk, el gospel, el country, americana, tradicional y blues. Un total de catorce temas integran este álbum grabado en directo en el Cambayá Club el 24 de marzo del 2012. Estamos ante un cd intimista, lleno de canciones con reivindicaciones que, aunque parezcan venir del pasado, siguen teniendo una vigencia muy actual en todos sus aspectos, tanto racial como político, humano o ético. El ambiente que se respira en el disco es el mismo que se podía palpar en los años sesenta en cualquier club del Greenwich Village de New York, escuchando a viejos trovadores beatniks como Bob Dylan o Dave Van Ronk, por citar un par de ejemplos característicos del ambiente de aquellos días. MUY BUENO. Here comes a new acoustic album by Cambaya/Karonte factory. This time, they present a duo with the voice and guitar of Tom Larden, an American musician now settled in Spain, and the harmonica player Allfreedom. This is not a pure blues album, because they include a good sample of other styles, such as folk, gospel, country, Americana, and traditional blues. The cd gathers fourteen songs, all them recorded live at Cambaya Club in March, 24 th. 2012. We are facing an intimistic cd, full of protest songs that, although they may seem they come from past times, still have a valid actual effect, in racial, political, ethical or human aspects. The album atmosphere is the same that could be felt in any club of Greenwich Village in New York during the sixties. Smoky crowded clubs where people listened to old beatnik protest

singers like Bob Dylan or Dave Van Ronk, to only mention two of the most popular ones, who totally reflected those times feelings. VERY GOOD.

Ñaco Goñi & Xulian Freire “CambaYá Te Digo”. Cambayá / Karonte 2013. Soy fan de este dúo, porque cuando se interpreta el blues tal como lo hacen estos dos músicos desde hace ya muchos años y siempre desde lo más profundo de las entrañas y el corazón, uno no puede más que quitarse el sombrero ante ellos y reverenciar su obra. Ñaco Goñi armónica y Xulian Freire guitarra y voz son dos músicos auténticos, libres, genuinos y apasionados de su trabajo. Ambos transmiten toda su sensibilidad en cada una de las canciones que interpretan, contagiando al oyente tanto con su alegría o buen humor como con su tristeza o mala idea, pero siempre a través de ese lenguaje musical negro y auténtico que tanto nos gusta. La verdad es que desde que empiezan a tocar tienen los blues. Ahora nos presentan una colección de trece estupendas gemas, que van desde Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson o Jimmy Reed hasta Mance Lipscomb, Memphis Slim, T-Bone Walker, Fred McDowell, etc, Las canciones en manos de este dúo cobran tal fuerza, intensidad, magnitud, calor, vigor, magia, energía… que difícilmente se puede salir vivo de ellas. Una de las grabaciones de blues más clásico y ortodoxo de este año 2013. BUENISIMO. I am fan of this duo because, when the blues is played like these two musicians do, one can only take his hat off and venerate the work they always give us. For many years Ñaco Goñi harmonica and Xulian Freire guitar and vocals have played blues from the deepest part of their hearts. They are two free, genuine original and passionate musicians who really love the music they play. Both communicate all their sensitivity in every song they do, captivating listeners with their joy and sense of humour as well as with their sadness or bad mood, but always through their true black musical language we so much like. The true thing is they get the blues since the very first moment they start to play. Now they give us a collection of thirteen small treasures, ranging from Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson or Jimmy Reed to Mance Lipscomb, Memphis Slim, T-Bone Walker or Fred McDowell that get such a magnitude, intense heat, powerful energy and magic, you cannot get out of them alive. This album is one of the most classical and orthodox blues recordings published in 2013. GREAT.

J.T. Lauritsen & Friends “Play By The Rules”. Hunters / Frank Roszak 2013. Un más que excelente álbum del cantante, armonicista y acordeonista J.T. Lauritsen. Junto a algunos amigos de la categoría de Anson Funderburgh, Victor Wainwright, Billy Gibson y muchos otros, ha sabido dar con la combinación más acertada para fabricar un disco redondo, donde la calidad de todos los músicos está al servicio de nuestro protagonista. Todos ellos arropan y dan el soporte adecuado para que las estupendas cualidades vocales de J.T. brillen con luz propia, Lauritsen también demuestra ser un excepcional armonicista y un fino y dotado músico de acordeón. Este es un trabajo que consta de doce canciones todas ellas impregnadas del mejor blues de Chicago, gospel, rhythm and blues de New Orleans, todo ello junto a elementos de soul y música zydeco. Si queréis degustar la música contenida en éste cd

impecable, bien expuesto y desarrollado con buen gusto, énfasis y pasión, sólo tenéis que haceros con una copia de éste “Play By The Rules” para gozar de éste fino, fresco y, en ocasiones, bailable disco. BUENISIMO. Here comes a more than excellent album by singer, harmonica player and accordionist J. T. Lauritsen. Together with some friends and outstanding musicians like Anson Funderburgh, Victor Wainwright, Billy Gibson and many others, he has round up a remarkable cd, where all musicians qualities and abilities perfectly combine to make J.T. Lauritsen shine at a very high level. All them wrap and give the best support to enhance J.T. vocal qualities along the whole recording. Lauritsen also proves he is an exceptional harmonica player, as well as a fine musician and an skilful accordion player. Twelve songs with the best Chicago blues, gospel or New Orleans rhythm & blues, spiced with soul and zydeco music elements which are displayed with a passionate tasteful feeling. If you would love to taste the music included in this faultless cd, you just have to get a copy of this "Play By The Rules" and enjoy this fine, cool and, sometimes, danceable album. GREAT.

Randy Scott “Out Of The Blue”. Favored Nations / Frank Roszak 2013. Estamos ante uno de los más significativos exponentes del blues de diseño contemporáneo. Randy Scott es un guitarrista ambicioso, versátil e irreverente, con una técnica envidiable y un fraseo limpio y rico en expresividad, que destila viveza y arrojo. Como vocalista Randy demuestra tener una voz bien timbrada y un magnifico y amplio registro capaz de enamorar a los oyentes más exigentes. Randy Scott no podía haber empezado con mejor pie en el mercado discográfico, máxime tratándose de su debut consiguiendo un notable alto, algo que no está al alcance de cualquiera. El disco ha sido producido por Peter Anderson y esto no es cualquier tontería, puesto que Peter ha sido ganador de varios premios Grammy. Además de Randy Scott a la voz y a la guitarra se encuentran Gary Novak y Matt Lesser baterías, Todd Conelly y Travis Carlton bajos (éste último bajista de Robben Ford) y Jeff Babko teclados, además de otros invitados entre los que cabe destacar a Albert Lee guitarra. Inmejorable debut de un músico que tiene por delante un gran futuro. MUY BUENO. Here comes one of the most significant names of contemporary design blues. Randy Scott is an ambitious, versatile, disrespectful guitar player, gifted with an enviable technique and a clean rich in expressiveness phrasing that leads into a daring lively performing. As a singer Randy proves to have a well pitched voice with a huge, magnificent record, able to captivate the most reluctant listeners. Randy Scott could not have better begun in the record market, especially if you take into account this is his debut album, he has done with a remarkable success, something that is not available to anyone. Peter Anderson has done the whole cd production, something that is not anything, because Peter has won several Grammy awards. Besides Randy Scott on vocals and guitar, you will also find Gary Novak and Matt Lesser on drums, Todd Conelly and Travis Carlton on bass (this last one was Robben Ford’s bass player) and Jeff Babko keyboards, besides other guest musicians like guitar player Albert Lee. In short words, this is an unbeatable debut of a musician who has a great future ahead. GREAT.

Various Artists “Blues From The Burgh 2”. Blues Society Of Western Pennsilvanya 2010 // Various Artists “Blues From The Burgh 3”. Blues Society Of Western Pennsilvanya 2012. Estos dos discos contienen una magnífica y variada muestra de las bandas y los músicos de blues que pueden encontrarse a lo largo y ancho del estado de Pennsilvanya, cuya capital es Harrisburg y, más concretamente, de las bandas afincadas en la zona oeste del estado. Una formidable idea de la Sociedad de Blues del Oeste de Pennsilvanya para dar a conocer lo que se cocina en aquella parte de los USA y, francamente, los grupos nada tienen que envidiar a muchos de los nombres más consagrados. Entre ambos cd’s se incluyen treinta y dos bandas, todas ellas con un tema como referencia de su trabajo. No voy a enumerarlas todas, pero algunas de las más sobresalientes serían Miss Freddye And Blue Faze, Angel Blue And The Prophets, Jill West And The Blues Attack, Felix And The Hurricanes, Billy The Kid And The Regulators, Bubs McKeg And Dr. Blue, Gary Belloma And The Blue Bombers, Mahajibee Blues Band o Robert Peckman, todas en el volumen dos de este amplio muestrario. En cuanto al tercer volumen se podría destacar a The Nancy McKeen Bluz Machine, Eugene Morgan And The Nightcrawlers, Strange Brew, Chris Yakopcic, Wayne And The Wild Roots, Rumpshakers, Igniters or Jimbo And The Soupbones, sin despreciar, por supuesto, al resto de los grupos que completan ambos volúmenes, todos francamente competentes. También se agradece que las canciones sean originales y no incluyan ningún ‘cover’. Iniciativas como estas son un excelente reclamo para que el aficionado al blues de cualquier rincón del mundo tenga conocimiento de lo que se está cociendo en otros lugares, estados o países. Cualquier asociación de blues debería pensar en lanzar al mercado discos con sus representantes mas cualificados, originales y genuinos. MUY BUENOS. These two albums gather a magnificent varied compilation of the bands and blues musicians who can be found around Pennsilvanya, whose capital is Harrisburg and, more specifically, the bands belonging to Pennsilvanya western area. It was a good decision of the Blues Society of Western Pennsilvanya to spread the blues that is played there. Frankly speaking, the selected groups have nothing to envy to many other well known names. You will find thirty-two bands, which present one song as a reference of their work. I will not list them all, but some of the most outstanding ones could be Miss Freddye And Blue Face, Angel Blue And The Prophets, Jill West And Blues Attack, Felix And The Hurricanes, Billy The Kid And The Regulators, Bubs McKeg And Dr. Blue, Gary Belloma And The Blue Bombers, Mahajibee Blues Band or Robert Peckman, all in volume two of this wide collection. Some of the names included in the third volume are The Nancy McKeen Bluz Machine, Eugene Morgan And The Nightcrawlers, Strange Brew, Chris Yakopcic, Wayne And The Wild Roots, Rumpshakers, igniters or Jimbo and The Soupbones, without disregarding the other able reliable bands that complete both volumes. Such initiatives are an excellent springboard to give exposure in blues circles around the world of the music that is played in different places, states or

countries. Any blues societies should think to release an album with their more genuine qualified musicians. GREAT.

Tommy Keys “Devils Den”. LPF 2013. Once nuevas canciones del cantante, compositor y pianista Tommy Keys, quien infunde a sus temas un profundo sentido de tempo y del swing, con un twist mitad New Orleans mitad New York ambientadas en oscuros y destartalados clubs y tugurios de mala nota llenos de whiskey, juego, mujeres y refeer. Aquellos que no estéis familiarizados con Tommy Keys no vayáis a pensar que es un músico cualquiera, Tommy ha sido finalista en el International Blues Challenge y también ha sido admitido en el New York Blues Hall of Fame. Asimismo ha demostrado su valía allí donde han sido requeridos sus servicios como cantante y pianista. Tommy ha tocado desde Georgia hasta Memphis, Mississippi e incluso ha participado en el B-Jazz festival de la ciudad de Burhausen en Alemania. Sus letras son atrevidas y tanto puede cantar sobre política como sobre la importancia de la cordura, el juicio y la sensatez, tanto en la juventud como en la madurez de la vida. Si os gustan los viejos y nuevos modelos del patrón musical del blues, el gumbo y el rhythm and blues de New Orleans en el estilo de Dr. John, Profesor Longhair e incluso Jack Dupree, entonces este artista os va que ni pintado. Sólo una sugerencia: Tommy ¿podrías cambiar o prescindir de Bob Owen en tu próximo cd? MUY BUENO. Here come eleven new songs by singer, composer and piano player Tommy Keys, who always gives a deep tempo and swing to all his compositions. All have a half New Orleans and a half New York twist that drive us to dark run-down clubs and bad reputation slums with whiskey, gambling, women and refeer. Those of you who are not familiar with Tommy Keys do not believe he is an ordinary musician. He has been finalist at the International Blues Challenge and has also entered into New York Blues Hall of Fame. He has also shown his value anywhere he has been required to play piano or sing. Tommy has played from Georgia to Memphis, Mississippi and he has even participated in B-Jazz festival in Burhausen, Germany. His song lyrics are daring, because he can sing about politics as well as about the importance of right judgement, good sense and wisdom both in youth days and in the maturity of life. If you love old and new faces of blues, gumbo, and New Orleans rhythm & blues patters in the path of Dr. John, Professor Longhair or even Jack Dupree, then you will enjoy Tommy Keys. Only a suggestion: Tommy, could you change or not include Bob Owen in your next cd? VERY GOOD.

Triblus “Vamos Tarde”. Self Production 2013. El grupo español Triblus formado por Antonio Osuna guitarras, Eduardo Viñolo batería, Carlos Philpott bajo, Cristóbal Oteros armónica y Emilio Varela teclados y voz, expone su música con claridad de ideas, buena técnica y conocimiento del lenguaje por el que transitan. Siete canciones de cosecha propia, donde ofrecen al oyente un discurso más que satisfactorio en clave de rock blues contemporáneo y elegante. Sé que no es fácil establecer unas líneas de separación entre lo que podríamos llamar blues contemporáneo o el blues del siglo pasado. Tales distinciones con frecuencia resultan inservibles, ya que si por ejemplo decimos que Robben Ford es un

The Spanish group Triblus with Antonio Osuna on guitars, Eduardo Vinolo on drums, Carlos Philpott on bass, Cristóbal Oteros on harmonica and Emilio Varela on keyboards and vocals, displays his music with clever ideas, good technique and knowledge of the musical language they are doing. Seven own songs, where they give a more than a satisfactory speech in the key of contemporary an elegant rock blues. I know it is not easy to establish a dividing line between contemporary blues and blues of the last century. Such distinctions are often useless. For example, if we say Robben Ford is a contemporary blues musician who plays design blues and The Travellin' Brothers are a last century blues band of the last century only because the play versions, what should we say then when Steve Vei plays blues? Finally what really matters is the good album Triblus have recorded with an amazing great sound and an excellent final production. Bet for them and you will win, word of Zumel!. GREAT.

Tony O “Life Of Blues”. Self Production. Tony O es un cantante y guitarrista de mucho calibre y un versado exponente de la tradición del blues de Chicago más ortodoxo. Dotado de una buena técnica y una fluida digitación, Tony se expresa con la suficiente pasión, sabiduría y contundencia como para conectar inmediatamente con el oyente, transmitiendo toda la energía y la magia que esta música es capaz de ofrecer. Tony O tiene una larga trayectoria y su nombre es suficientemente conocido en los ambientes neoyorkinos, no en vano ha tocado con diferentes bandas y músicos de la costa este, The Legendary Blues Band fue probablemente el grupo que le catapultó a los primeros puestos del frente bluesero. Excelente intérprete y compositor de música ‘Americana’ con raíces, donde el espíritu del blues planea sutilmente en casi todas sus eclécticas composiciones. En éste nuevo trabajo Mark nos demuestra su ingenio y brillante talento como vocalista, guitarrista y escritor, desarrollando esta última faceta con naturalidad y firmeza. Son un total de doce canciones semiacústicas, con tempos tranquilos y sin agobios, un repertorio a todas luces atractivo tanto en la forma como en el fondo, en una hermosa sucesión de cortes llenos de atmósferas etéreas y envolventes. Mark está acompañado por Debra Dobkin batería y pèrcusión y Nick Kirgo guitarras. Oli Brown “Songs From The Road”. Ruf 2013. Si el cantante, compositor y guitarrista Oli Brown tiene algún mérito, es el haber conseguido que, en los últimos años, sus discos se hayan convertido en piezas de culto entre los aficionados al rock-blues, sobre todo entre los europeos, donde tiene una cohorte de seguidores absolutamente fieles a su obra. Actualmente Oli está atravesando un momento dulce en su carrera y este cd es buena muestra de ello. Nueve temas y un dvd que recoge un total de trece canciones grabadas el 16 de diciembre del 2012 en el club ‘The Waterfront’ de la ciudad de Norfolk, Reino Unido. Todas las canciones muestran lo mejor de Oli Brown en directo, la atmósfera es tremenda y el espectador quedará gratamente cautivado por la fuerza expresiva y un sonido absolutamente asesino. La voz y la guitarra de Oli Brown están perfectamente apoyadas por Scott Barnes bajo y voces y Wayne Proctor batería y voces. El trio se muestra fiel a sus principios musicales imponiendo su ley y su fuerza sonora a base de descargas llenas de electricidad de alto voltaje. MUY BUENO. The principal merit of singer, songwriter and guitarist Oli Brown that, in recent years, his records have become venerated and cult pieces of work among rock-blues fans,

especially in Europe, where he has a legion of supporters who worship him and are absolutely faithful to the music he plays. Oli is now undergoing a sweet period in his career and this cd proves it. Nine songs and a dvd including thirteen tracks recorded at “The Waterfront” in Norfolk, United Kingdom in December 16th. 2012. All songs show the best Oli Brown playing live. He creates a terrific atmosphere where all listeners will be pleasantly captivated by the powerful expressive sound performed by an absolute killer like Oli Brown. Dana Fuchs “Bliss Avenue”. Ruf 2013. Cada vez que escucho a la cantante Dana Fuchs pienso que se va sintiendo más cómoda y segura en su rol de vocalista y va cogiendo fuerza y protagonismo. En éste nuevo trabajo, me da la impresión que Dana ha hecho lo que le ha venido en gana, prescindiendo de los consejos que puedan haberle dado las personas que se mueven en su entorno. Fuchs demuestra carácter y buen gusto en lo que se refiere al repertorio escogido. Quiero hacer hincapié en que sus cualidades vocales no pretenden ser una nueva versión de Janis Joplin, sino que tiene ideas propias y las pone a su propio servicio. En éste trabajo se incluye un poco de todo, en una mezcla original y explosiva de soul, roots, blues y rock sureño. Dana Fuchs voz y percusión, Jon Diamond guitarras, Jack Daley bajo, Shawn Pelton batería, Glenn Patscha teclados, Hammond-B3, piano, Wurlitzer, finalmente Tabitha Fair y Nicki Richards coros. Un excelente disco de música de Florida, que sin duda calará hondo entre todos sus seguidores, así como en aquellos que la descubran por primera vez. MUY BUENO. Every time I listen to singer Dana Fuchs I believe she is gradually feeling more comfortable and confident in her singer role and she is also gaining in force and prominence. In this new work, I think Dana has done what she wanted to do, ignoring the advice that might have given some people around her. Fuchs shows good taste and personality in the repertoire she has chosen. I want to emphasize that with her vocal qualities she does not intend to be a new Janis Joplin version, she has her own ideas to build up her own musical expression. This album includes a little bit of everything, in a good mixture of explosive original soul, roots, blues and southern rock. Lurrie Bell “Blues In My Soul”. Delmark 2013. Estamos ante uno de los grandes guitarristas del panorama actual de Chicago. Catorce temas vibrantes y de bella factura con el característico e inconfundible sello de Lurrie Bell, hijo del armonicista y cantante Carey Bell. Blues envolvente,

interpretado desde el corazón, desde la soledad y desde la reverencia que Lurrie siempre ha demostrado tener por los blues. Aquí podréis descubrir toda la magnitud de su arte con la solidez de la que hace gala cuando toca su música, la música de su familia, la que desde su nacimiento siempre ha estado bebiendo y de la que también ha estado alimentándose. En este nuevo cd la voz y la guitarra de Lurrie están respaldadas por algunos de los habituales de la escena de los clubs de Chicago, como Roosevelt Purifoy piano y órgano, Melvin Smith bajo y Willie Hayes batería. Un auténtico ejercicio de houserockin’ blues de carretera, de garito, de tugurio sórdido y deprimente, de juke joint del sur profundo del Mississippi, a cargo del cantante y guitarrista Studebaker John y su banda. John es un músico que conoce todas las armas, las triquiñuelas y los artilugios para haceros bailar y estremecer con sus blues sucios y grasientos. Con ellos transmite unas sensaciones mágicas e hipnóticas que os atraparán como una araña atrapa a sus víctimas en su mortal y terrible tela. Son un total de dieciséis temas que van minando poco a poco y con lentitud la resistencia que el oyente pueda ofrecer para salir vivo de estos blues, porque los cuatro músicos son unos verdaderos y endiablados ‘killers’ del houserockin’ blues. Self Production 2013. “The Return of Peetie Whitestraw” es una intensa y emocionada crónica de una saga de canciones inspiradas en los viejos bluesmen de preguerra, que dieron luz y brillo a un estilo de blues vibrante, profundo y apasionado. Aaron Burton canta con convicción y se acompaña de su guitarra acústica y sobre todo del dobro. Sus canciones ahondan en el vértigo de la condición humana, al tiempo que nos propone una emotiva reivindicación y reflexión sobre los blues interpretados en los viejos días por Kokomo Arnold, Mississippi John Hurt, Blind Willie McTell, Reverendo Gary Davis y demás héroes del blues del Delta. Los catorce temas que se incluyen en el disco son composiciones del propio Aaron Burton. Hay que mencionar también que ‘Stompin’ Bill Johnston interviene tocando la armónica en tres canciones. "The Return of Peetie Whitestraw" is an intense passionate chronicle of a song saga inspired by old pre-war bluesmen, those musicians who enlightened and gave brightness to a vibrant, deep passionate kind of blues. Paul Lamb & Chad Strentz “Goin’ Down This Road”. BluRoots 2013. Esta es la nueva y última aportación discográfica del armonicista británico Paul Lamb. Se trata de un disco de blues totalmente acústico en compañía del cantante y guitarrista Chad Strentz. Un viaje ilustrativo, donde ambos músicos recorren y recurren a sus antiguos mitos de juventud como Big Bill Broonzy, Roosvelt Sykes, Sticks McGee o Sonny Boy Williamson II. Para ello han escogido un repertorio que nos retrotrae a las viejas historias y anécdotas de los bluesmen que viajaban en los trenes de carga por las líneas de los ferrocarriles del sur. Paul y Chad también imprimen carácter y originalidad a otros compositores más modernos, como Solomon Burke, Ray Charles y Lloyd Price. En definitiva, “Goin’ Down This Road” es un disco reivindicativo de los hobos, el whiskey, las mujeres, los tugurios o la carretera desde la perspectiva de dos músicos que, por encima de todo, aman los blues y los interpretan desde el respeto y la veneración. recording and last contribution of British harmonica player Paul Lamb. This is an acoustic blues album he has done together with singer and guitar player Chad Strentz. The cd becomes an illustrative journey, where both musicians go over and turn to their youth old myths, such as Big Bill Broonzy, Roosevelt Sykes, Sticks McGee or Sonny Boy Williamson II. They have chosen a repertoire that takes us back to the old good stories of those bluesmen which travelled in freight trains along the southern railway lines. Paul and Chad also give a special character and originality to some other most actual artists, like Solomon Burke, Ray Charles and Lloyd Price. In short words, "Goin' Down This Road" is an album that focusses and gives relevance to hobos, whiskey, women, slums or roads, always from the point of view of two relevant musicians who, over all, love the blues and perform it with respect and deep veneration. Alabama Red “Windy City Blues”. Wolf 2013. Alabama Red es el nombre profesional de un músico de blues poco conocido y que, en realidad, se llama Curtis Ray. Alabama Red nació en 1927 en Panola, Alabama y aprendió a cantar y a tocar la guitarra y el piano en las diferentes iglesias locales que frecuentó cuando era un chaval. Como tantos otros hombres negros, emigró a Chicago durante los años cuarenta, formando muy pronto su propia banda y tocando tanto en iglesias como en los clubs de blues de la ciudad. De hecho, nunca tuvo demasiada suerte en lo que a grabar discos se refiere. En los años ochenta Alabama Red entregó un casette a Hannes Folterbauer, propietario de Wolf Records, para que lo editara en disco. Ahora, después de muchos años, tenemos la oportunidad de escucharlas en éste cd sobrecogedor. La fuerza y la pasión desbordantes que se desatan en cada uno de los trece temas que aquí se recogen, son verdaderamente arrolladoras. Alabama Red voz, piano y guitarra, Jimmy Johnson guitarra, posiblemente Alan Batts órgano y Howard Scott guitarra y completamente desconocidos el armónica, bajo, batería y saxo. Un gran disco de blues de Chicago representativo de lo que se hacía en aquella ciudad durante los años ochenta. Desgraciadamente “Windy City Blues” es el único álbum que existe de éste bluesman fallecido en 2006. IMPRESCINDIBLE. Alabama Red is the professional nickname of a quite unknown blues musician, named Curtis Ray. Alabama Red was born in 1927 in Panola, Alabama and learned to sing and to play guitar and piano in different local churches he used to go when he was a kid. Like so many other black men, he travelled and settled in Chicago during the forties and soon he formed his own band, playing regularly both in churches and around city blues clubs. In fact, he was not a lucky man, because he never had the chance to go to the recording studios. In the eighties Alabama Red gave a cassette with some of his music to Hannes Folterbauer, Wolf Records owner, to be published on a record. Now and after so many years, we can finally listen to his music in this impressing album. The overflowing rolling strength and passion of the thirteen songs, is really amazing. Alabama Red is on vocals, piano and guitar, Jimmy Johnson guitar, possibly Alan Batts organ and Howard Scott guitar and completely unknown harmonica, bass, drums and sax players. A great Chicago blues album that perfectly shows the music you could listen in that city during the eighties. Unfortunately

"Windy City Blues" is the only album of this bluesman which died in 2006. ESSENTIAL.

Marcos Coll “Under The Wings”. Gaztelupeko Hotsak (2 Cd’s) 2013. Marcos Coll, uno de los más fructíferos armonicistas españoles y quizás de los más conocidos fuera de nuestras fronteras, se exhibe ahora con una variopinta recolección de temas de diferentes estilos musicales como el funk, latin, hip-hop, afrofunk y, por supuesto, mucho blues. Blues del bueno, del mejor, del de toda la vida, todo ello en dos cds que acaba de publicar Gaztelupeko Hotsak. Marcos da un repaso a su carrera, presentando a músicos con los que ha compartido estudio de grabación y, por supuesto, escenario, algunos de primera fila como el bajista Aron Burton y otros menos conocidos como el guitarrista y cantante Guitar Crusher. Un total de veintiún temas sin desperdicio, abarcando un periodo que va desde 1999 hasta el 2011. Marcos sopla con la técnica y la habilidad a la que nos tiene acostumbrados, con bellos y atractivos fraseos y ése sonido grueso y profundo con el que sabe envolver el producto. Si queréis vibrar y disfrutar del blues más auténtico y real que se hace en España, podéis hacerlo con Marcos Coll y los diferentes músicos con los que se rodea en este disco, fruto de su actividad y labor durante doce años. Además de los dos músicos mencionados anteriormente, también están su ex colega y compañero Adrián Costa, Chris Rannenberg, Sax Gordon, Antonio ‘Pax’ Alvarez, Ñaco Goñi, Keith Dunn o Tonky de la Peña entre otros. MUY BUENO. Marcos Coll, one of the best most productive Spanish harmonica players and perhaps one of the most popular ones abroad, delights us with a varied collection of songs, including different musical styles like funk, latin, hip-hop, afrofunk and, of course, a lot of blues. Good blues, the best and most genuine one, gathered in two cds that have just been published for Gaztelupeko Hotsak Records. Marcos reviews his career, introducing different musicians he has recorded or shared stage with, some first class ones, like bass player Aron Burton and other less known ones, like singer and guitar player Guitar Crusher. There are twenty one faultless songs with not a bad single note on them, covering a period from 1999 to 2011. Marcos blows with his usual amazing technique and skill. His phrasing is beautiful and very attractive, because has got that deep fat tone that wraps the music he plays. If you want to enjoy and quiver with excitement with the most genuine blues you can find in Spain, you should listen to Marcos Coll and the different musicians who back him in this album, which includes much of his work in the last twelve years. Besides the two already mentioned musicians, you can also find his former friend and colleague Adrian Costa, Chris Rannenberg, Sax Gordon, Antonio 'Pax' Alvarez, Ñaco Goñi, Keith Dunn or Tonky de la Peña, among others. Blas Picon & The Junk Express “Askin Out Loud”. Self Production 2013. Blas Picón es otro armonicista y también cantante afincado en Barcelona. Actualmente y desde hace un par o tres de años, Blas está embarcado e inmerso en el proyecto de tocar e interpretar blues profundo, y lo hace sin bajista, con el único respaldo del excelente guitarrista Oscar Rabadán y el batería Reginald Vilardell. El blues de éste trío está orientado hacia el

sonido electrificado del blues sucio y grasiento que se toca en los juke joints del Mississippi, un estilo totalmente downhome y absolutamente negroide. Para poder hacerse una idea lo que interpretan, os recomendaría que, además de escucharles, buscarais, sobre todo si no los conocéis, a tipos como Terry ‘Harmónica’ Bean, Big George Brock, Jimmy ‘Duck’ Holmes, Anthony ‘Big A’ Sherrod, Robert Lee ‘Lil’ Poochie’ Watson, Hezekiah Early, Elmo Williams o Louis ‘Gearshifter’ Youngblood, por citar a algunos pocos representantes que todavía quedan con vida por el sur de Mississippi. Si queréis conocer y disfrutar del groove y el twist que estos músicos imprimen a dicho estilo de blues, no dudéis ni un momento en haceros con una copia de este disco. Lo disfrutaréis. MUY BUENO. Blas Picón is another harmonica player and singer settled in Barcelona. Since about two or three years, Blas is totally devoted and fully engaged in the project of playing and performing deep blues. He does it without bass player, with the only support of excellent guitar player Oscar Rabadán and drummer Reginald Vilardell. Their blues go to the electrified dirty greasy sound that is played at Mississippi juke joints, a completely down home and absolutely black style. If you want to have an idea of the music they do, I would recommend you that, besides listening to them, you look for guys like Terry 'Harmonica' Bean, Big George Brock, Jimmy 'Duck' Holmes, Anthony 'Big' TO Sherrod, Robert Lee 'Lil' Poochie' Watson, Hezekiah Early, Elmo Williams or Louis 'Gearshifter' Youngblood, especially if you are not familiar with them, because they are some representative names still alive and active in the south of Mississippi. Hamilton Loomis “Give It Back”. Self Production / RTE International Artists 2013. El cantante y guitarrista Hamilton Loomis nos ofrece su particular visión de la música con un discurso bien vertebrado, expuesto con claridad y buen gusto. Nuestro hombre realiza con clase una mezcla de soul, blues, funk, sweet pop y rock, siempre desde una vertiente personal llena de originalidad y una puesta en escena muy agradable que busca siempre el reto y la vanguardia. El disco contiene una sucesión de canciones que consiguen crear una atmósfera rica en matices, emociones y sensaciones, en muchos casos etéreas, llenas de calor, color y agradable fragancia. Bien respaldado por un colchón instrumental rico y bien moldeado, Hamilton Loomis se desenvuelve muy bien con la guitarra y la voz, dando como resultado un disco bien trabajado que se adaptará con facilidad a los gustos de todo aquel que lo escuche. background, where Loomis feels comfortable both with his guitar and his voice, which makes as a result a well done album that will easily fit into the musical tastes of almost every listener. VERY GOOD.

Buen debut discográfico del cantante y guitarrista canadiense Lee Palmer, con el que trata de expresar su particular actitud ante la vida e intenta transmitir muchas de las sensaciones que la música le ha enseñado a través de años y años de incansable búsqueda. Esta colección de diez canciones son para Palmer como un poderoso catalizador con el que puede seguir fluyendo su particular energía. Y todo ello lo realiza a través de esa búsqueda innegable y continua por la que se mueve, para de ese modo poder absorber y aprender de todo lo que encuentra en su camino. Además de Lee Palmer guitarra y voz, también están Al Cross batería, David Woodhead bajo, Wendell Ferguson y Elmer Ferrer guitarras y Denis Keldie wurlitzer, hammond, fender rhodes, piano y acordeón. Canciones originales y arreglos en consonancia con su estilo, se dan la mano en este notable disco que contiene elementos de jazz, blues, swing y balada. MUY BUENO. Este disco captura con total naturalidad el espíritu y el estilo brillante del blues de Chicago que Mark ‘Bird’ Stafford y su grupo practica con gran naturalidad. El álbum fue grabado sin ningún tipo de overdubs ni otras técnicas de estudio. Además de Mark ‘Bird’ Staffiord a la armónica y voz, la banda incluye a Aaron Griggs y Fabio Parovel guitarras, Dennis Pinhorn contrabajo y Tyler Burgess batería. El repertorio escogido está formado por once canciones, distribuidas entre Junior Parker (1), Sonny Boy Williamson (2), Little Walter (2), Jimmy Rogers (1), Jimmy Reed (1), Slim Harpo (1) y Willie Dixon (3). Ed Maly “Whiskey & My Gun”. Hot Texas Tunes 2013. El vocalista y guitarrista Ed Maly vuelve de nuevo a la actualidad con un trabajo digno, alegre, con un excelente y más que loable sentido de humor, que se hace patente al escuchar con atención las letras de las canciones que contiene este “Whiskey & My Gun”. Estamos ante un disco que viene a ser una prolongación de su anterior álbum. La mayoría de las canciones que aquí encontramos suenan relajadas y están interpretadas en un tono muy natural, nada afectado, lo que hace que el oyente pueda disfrutarlas con fruición. Ed Maly está acompañado por unos apreciables músicos, que saben leer perfectamente su discurso musical y lo secundan de forma apreciable. Después de una primera escucha, parece como si las canciones se hubieran quedado algo cortas, pues el tiempo ha pasado rápidamente y casi no hemos podido deleitarnos con todas ellas. En mi opinión, eso es indicativo de que nos encontramos ante un buen disco. MUY BUENO. Singer and guitar player Ed Maly comes back to the front line with an honest joyful work, with an excellent and enviable good sense of humour that becomes evident if you attentively listen to all song lyrics included in this "Whiskey & My Gun". In fact, this album follows the same line that his previous one. Most of the songs have a relaxed sound and are performed on a very natural unaffected way, so every listener will enjoy them with delight. Ed Maly is backed by some remarkable musicians, who have perfectly understood Ed’s musical conception, and they cleverly support him. After a first listen, it looks like songs are quite short, because time runs fast and we have hardly been able to savour them. In my opinion, this proves it is a good album. VERY GOOD.

En éste año 2013, ha ganado el International Blues Challenge, premio que anualmente concede la Blues Foundation en Memphis, Tennessee. Francamente, para muchos de nosotros ha sido una sorpresa su descubrimiento, pues Little G. Weevil mantiene intacto el espíritu del blues más profundo y original que se puede imaginar. Con su magnífica voz y acompañado solamente por su guitarra, Little G Weevil hace temblar los cimientos estructurales del blues con su estilo íntimo, “raw” y “deep down”. Little G Weevil nos presenta doce canciones propias, donde muestra todo su arte y su inteligencia emocional, evidenciando unas buenas dotes musicales y un
