Energy Sources

Do Now: ● What are all of the possible sources we can

get energy from? What are the pros and cons of each?

● What is renewable vs. nonrenewable?

Objectives:

● Distinguish between renewable and nonrenewable resources.

● Explain pros and cons of various energy sources.

What are Resources:

● Renewable resources are resources that can be replaced such as trees, water, etc.

● Nonrenewable resources cannot be replaced such as minerals (coal)

Fossil Fuels - nonrenewable

● Non-renewable - we cannot replace them, when they are gone they are gone forever

● made from organic (living) organism that have changed over timeo coalo oilo natural gas

Renewable Energy Overview

Geothermal Energy - renewable

● Heated water from under the earth creates steam

● Pipes take the heated water, steam, to a turbine

● Steam powers the turbine to spin creating energy

Geothermal Energy ~ cost/benefits

● Could supply 10% total needed energy● Small carbon footprint● Minimal waste products

o some waste can be used such as sulfuro waste water recycled back into earth to be reheated

and used for power

Nuclear Energy - renewable

● Nuclear fission is the process where the nucleus (hence 'nuclear' energy) of a 'heavy', fissionable atom is split. Enormous amounts of energy are released in this process.

● This energy, in the form of heat, is transferred to steam turbines to generate electricity.

Nuclear Energy - cost/benefit

● radioactive material can be released if overheat, natural disaster, etc.

● low carbon footprint, very clean energy

Hydropower - renewable

● hydropower accounted for roughly half of the nation’s renewable-generated electricity in 2013

● water enters the facility and turns a turbine

● that spins the generator and creates energy

Solar Energy - renewable● The curved mirrors are tilted toward the sun,

focusing sunlight on tubes that run the length of the mirrors.

● The reflected sunlight heats a fluid flowing through the tubes.

● The hot fluid then is used to boil water in a conventional steam-turbine generator to produce electricity.

Wind Energy - renewable

● The energy in the wind turns two or three propeller-like blades around a rotor.

● The rotor is connected to the main shaft, which spins a generator to create electricity.

Biofuel Energy - renewable● may also hear it called biomass energy/fuel ● organic renewable energy source that

includes materials such as agriculture and forest residues, energy crops, and algaeo composted materials - corn cobs, egg shells, etc.

● still working on making this more efficient
