How Does UCG work?

• Two wells (injection and production) are drilled into the coal seam.

• Wells are connected on the horizontal plane.

• Air/oxygen is introduced creating the heat for gasification, not combustion!

• The raw product gas is extracted via the production well. Key components are carbon monoxide and hydrogen.

Page 16: Energy –Self Reliance

Underground Coal Gas (UCG)

• UCG produces syngas which is an ideal feedstock for power generation, fuel production, and chemical manufacture

• For fuel production, the Gas to Liquids (GTL) process is adopted using Fischer-Tropsch

What it can get us!

process is adopted using Fischer-Tropschtechnology

• GTL can produce superior synthetic diesel and jet fuel, with no sulphur.

Thar Coal PotentialThar Desert contains the world’s 7th largest coal reserves:

175 Billion Ton = 50 Billion TOE = 2000 TCFTotal Thar Coal Reserve More than Saudi Arabia 68 times higher than

Development of Block II alone would

bring in investment of USD 12 Billion

Entire Thar Coal Reserves can be used to

generate 100,000 MW of electricity for

over 200 years

Getting most from every wellWhat to overcome

• Connecting beyond the

drilling damage

• Average is 6” to 9” in

Pakistan

• Technology is available

Page 20: Energy –Self Reliance

Benefits

• Minimize 12 billion dollars of import bill

• Bringing indigenous gas online

• Energy – Self Reliance

Reaping the results
