Corporate and social responsibility (CSR)
Stakeholder engagement
A company’s reputation can be damaged when public stakeholders and non-governmental organisations feel that their interests have not been addressed during corporate development programmes. These risks can outweigh a project’s technical risks and need to be identified early in the strategic planning process. Our outrage management service works with a client’s project management and business planning teams to evaluate project-related risks and to plan communication and mitigation strategies.
Key strengths and highlights
A CSR service focused on practical project-related issues, rather than the strategic–public-relations–communication-based approach of other providers
A service with measurable performance goals such as project authorisation time, regulatory intervention time and supply-chain compliance
Environmental impact assessment and permitting
Initial project scoping and baseline assessment
We provide multidisciplinary EIAs that are managed by in-house ecology, zoology (protected species), marine biology and archaeology specialists. Our early integration of engineering solutions, which aims to design out any environmental impacts at an early stage, reduces the risk of a project being called in for a public inquiry. In addition, our team’s commercial sensitivity facilitates regulatory approval without undue and impractical constraints being placed on the project.
Our support services continue into management plans for construction building on mitigation measures and commitment to the environmental statement through to operational procedures and decommissioning.
Communications and public liaison
Public communication and liaison skills are critical to reducing public concerns and protecting corporate reputations. We provide a full in-house service that publishes public documents and holds community liaison sessions to increase public awareness and facilitate community involvement.
Integrated pollution prevention and control
Our in-house chemical engineering and air emissions impact assessment teams are experienced in applying for IPPC licences. These teams have particular expertise in large power, renewable energy and oil and gas infrastructure projects.
Key strengths and highlights
A commercial approach to mitigation of environmental impacts
A full in-house service capability
Strong community and public liaison and communication skills

EXAMPLES OF OUR ENERGY SECTOR EXPERIENCE
LNG
National Grid and Grain LNG Ltd
LNG importation terminal, Isle of Grain, Kent (2004–ongoing)
RSK was originally retained to prepare and undertake all of the necessary environmental studies required to gain approval for the LNG importation terminal, loading jetty, pipelines and associated plant and equipment, and to provide health and safety management services to the construction team.
RSK’s involvement has now grown to incorporate the provision of a complete range of project and programme management services on behalf of National Grid and overseeing all aspects of the design-and-build contract to ensure that this nationally important project is delivered on time and on budget.
National Grid
Milford Haven to Aberdulais and Felindre to Tirley natural gas pipelines (2005–ongoing)
RSK originally produced the environmental statement for this major pipeline project. Our services incorporated GIS mapping, archaeological investigations and surveys, ecological surveys, enviro-geotechnical and photo-geomorphological studies, and the preparation of notices and advertisements. Planning applications and screening opinions were proposed for multiple above-ground installation extensions.
RSK is now moving to support the construction of these assets and thereby ensure that the highest standards of environmental and health and safety management are applied and the ecological and archaeological areas of interest are protected during the process.
RSK support to ensure the highest environmental and health and safety management on National Grid pipelines is ongoing.
