Energy pathwaysLearning Objectives:
1. What can affect energy pathways globally?
Learning Outcomes:A/A* Grade students will be able to evaluate the effects of disruptions to energy pathwaysB Grade students will be able to explain the effects of disruptions to energy pathways.C Grade students will be able to describe the effects of disruptions to energy pathways.
23rd October 2014C/W
Starter:1. Write a definition for energy pathway – use your book2. Make a list or spider diagram of all the ways energy pathways can be disrupted
Pathway disruption
Price and payment disputes Piracy e.g.
off the Somali coast
Terrorism or conflict
closing choke points
Political discord between supplier
and consumer
Diversion of supply, perhaps
for a higher price
Technical interruptio
n to production
Producer’s supply simply
runs out
Natural disasters
Learning Outcomes:A/A* Grade students will be able to evaluate the effects of disruptions to energy pathwaysB Grade students will be able to explain the effects of disruptions to energy pathways.C Grade students will be able to describe the effects of disruptions to energy pathways.
Activity: You are going to go around the room and gather information about disruption to energy pathways to fill in your A3 sheets.
Use the sources on each station to get down as much detail as possible
Case study name Facts and figures Who was affected? Why?
Russian Energy Giants –
- Accounts for 92% of Russia’s gas production
- Is the sole gas supplier to several European countries including Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Moldova.
- Annual earnings of £31.55 billion
- Russian government still owns 50.002% of the shares.
Quiz Quiz TradeGet up and go and find somebody else in the room. Ask them your question and they must try and answer. Then they ask you your question and you try and answer. When you are finished swap questions and go and find somebody else and repeat!
Why would the Russian government keep a 50.002% share of Gazprom?http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/ukraine/10902271/Europe-faces-gas-shortage-as-Russia-cuts-Ukraine-supply-after-talks-fail.html
Read the article and highlight all the ways in which Europe is trying to increase energy security given the fact the Russian gas supply is unstable.
Then stick in book.
How can we maintain energy security and reduce reliance on Russia?
Write a paragraph to summarise today’s learning
June 2011
Using named examples, assess the extent to which energy insecurity might lead to conflicts both within and between countries (15)
1. Popocatepetl, Mexico
2. Skjaldbreiður, Iceland
Destructive plate boundary/(conservative)Constructive plate boundary
Learning Outcomes:A/A* Grade students will be able to explain the difference between composite and shield volcanos using key terms and predict what volcanoes are most likely in given areas.B Grade students will be able to explain the difference between composite and shield volcanosC Grade students will be able to describe the differences between composite and shield volcanoes.
1. What type of plate boundary do composite volcanoes appear at?2. What are eruptions like?3. What are the layers of the volcano made of?
Composite Volcanoes
Shield Volcanoes

What do you notice about the lava in comparison? How could this explain the shape of the volcanoes?

Do you think this is fair?
What is Fair Trade?
“Fairtrade is a strategy for poverty alleviation and sustainable development. Its purpose is to create opportunities for producers and workers who have been economically disadvantaged or marginalized by the conventional trading system. If fair access to markets under better trade conditions would help them to overcome barriers to development, they can join Fairtrade.”
What are the key words in this statement?
Diamond 9• In your groups,
arrange your 9 statements in order of which you most agree with and which you least agree with
5 mins
Activity: Copy and complete these sentences:The statement that I thought was the most important was ……………… because…..The statement that I thought was the least important was ……………….because……
Going bananas in the Dominican Republic
Watch the video and answer the following questions:1. What is the name of the cooperative set up in this clip?2. How much extra do they get per pound for Fair Trade bananas?3. Name 3 things they have been able to fund with the extra income they get.

Fair trade prize competition:
Think of as many FairTrade products as you can. It’s Fair Trade fortnight, so hopefully you’ve seen lots around!
- Work in pairs or on your own (if you work in a pair, be prepared to split the prize!)
- You cannot just name things that are edible- You cannot name more than 2 fruits
Random name generator will be used to select a person in the class. If they can name 5 products they win the prize. If they can’t, we pick another name until someone can!

Do you think LA should become a Fair Trade school?
What would this mean and how could it be achieved?
Would you be willing to pay more for FT products?
