Innovative Solutions For Energy Independence Sustainable Communities
Jubail Energy Management Conference 5 – 6 December 2017
Energy Independence! Year 1991
The Vision is “Energy Independence”: There should be no need for Power Plants, Overhead Transmission Lines, Underground Cables or Transformers.
The Mission is to:
Reduce energy demand through efficient technologies,
Produce clean energy through renewables, and Reuse waste through proper management.
EMS – LME are dedicated for Zero Energy
Buildings / Communities
The Approach
Energy Value Analysis - EVA Building orientation Building Envelop HVAC Lighting & Control
Plug load strategies and controls Hot Water Heating Solar Arrays Water LEED Certification
Building Orientation
• Solar Exposure - Using hourly climate data and geometric analysis, the degree of solar exposure will be calculated.
• Insolation Grid - First overshadowing masks will be generated at each point due to surrounding buildings and objects, then hourly diffuse and direct radiation data will be read directly from the climate data over an hourly period.
• Surface Insolation - Insolation values will be calculated for exterior surfaces in the model to view the distribution of incident radiation over complex facades shapes.

Building Envelop
Buildings with high insulation values minimizes the infiltration and cooling requirements, It is intended to use Insulated Concrete Form (ICF), a highly insulative (high R-value) and high thermal mass material, allowing better thermal regulation of the indoor environment.
Lower Design and Construction cost
ICF walls have low- u-values (<0.2 W/oK.m2) as compared to normal construction of 0.57 W/oK.m2.
Lower AC requirement and associated electrical load.
Faster Construction of structure up to 50%.
Crack free and hence air tight construction leading to lower air infiltration.
Approved by: UPC, DM, JAFZA, DAFZA & Masdar
Thermal Modeling
Thermal modeling will be simulated using the results of Buildings’: orientation, shading and insulation values of roof, walls & windows. The simulation will also consider the effect of extra shading resulting from installing the PV panels on the roof.
Cooling Load Simulation
Load Profile for Optimized Design
Solar Arrays • With the consumption reduced, the remaining
will be generated using the renewable solar energy that will be designed specifically for this purpose.
• Onsite Solar PV to achieve net zero energy feeding to the grid (positive energy)
• Grid Connected
• Located on roof – improving the roof shading, parking, external area (feasible locations will be analyzed)
• smart grid system. The smart grid is to
interconnect the installed renewables (solar, wind, and energy storage) to the grid.
• Electric buses Charging Stations.
EMS’s Zero Energy Buildings
Bloom Schools, Dubai – NET ZERO ENERGY
LEED GOLD Cx-A
Design Construction Operations
Client : Bloom Education (BLOOM)
Built Up Area : 53,000 m2 (570,492 ft²)
Project Value: $86 Million USD
Consultant National Engineering Bureau
Project Management: ASPECT
Description: Building envelope enhancement led to reduction of cooling capacity. Solar energy supplemented consumption to reach NET ZERO ENERGY.
Types of Sustainable Communities On- Grid: within the boundary of an existing utility network, requiring substantial cost to be connected and / or long time.
OFF – Grid: Out side the boundary of nearest utility network, requiring substantial cost to be connected and / or long time.
Project Export & Import of Energy
Tenants: 15,500 over 6 years. Comprises of: 185 accommodation units, Laundry, Central Kitchens, Mess Halls, Mosques, Admin, Commercial & Recreational buildings. Power Plant: comprising of 15 MW Diesel Generators, fueled with 23,000 liters / day of Diesel that will be transported to site each day. {EMS – 7 MW} Air – Conditioning: 9,000 Tons of window-type units. {EMS – 3,750 TR} Estimated water consumption is 1,134 m3 / Day. {EMS – Reduced} Sewage Treatment Plant to process over 1,000 m3 / day. {EMS – Recycled} Municipal Waste estimated at 26.4 Tons / day, to be disposed of each day. {EMS – Recycled}
