Improved Performance (Usage)
Reduced Operating Usage (Hours)
Energy Savings is based on two main factors:
![Page 11: Energy Management Best Practices - SchoolDude](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022110200/55c56e29bb61eb24538b45cc/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Baseline=Benchmark? What is it and why is it helpful?
Technical: (Pertaining to Energy)Before performing a retrofit, savings must be determined by comparing energy use before and after. The proper documentation of the pre-retrofit or baseline conditions is critical. If this information is not documented, it is lost and cannot be determined after installation.
Energy Savings is based on two main factors:
Improved Performance (Usage) Reduced Operating Usage (Hours)
Baseline or Benchmark:
It is a measurement that is taken to gain a full understanding of what is being used or spent during a certain period of time in the past. It can be measured against to see if there is any positive or negative change, or if things stay the same once changes have been made.

How do I Know which Buildings Need Help?Do you want to Save Money and Be Better Stewards?
- This does not happen overnight.
- This will be measured in months, but more likely, years.
- This is not easy.
-This will take a lot of work.
-This will involve a lot of people at your educational organization.
- This will help your educational organization save time, money, and resources.
- The students, faculty and staff, and other stakeholders can make a difference and see the results.
- This IS important.
![Page 19: Energy Management Best Practices - SchoolDude](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022110200/55c56e29bb61eb24538b45cc/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Step One: Put the Use and Cost Data into UtilityDirect
This part is painful and tedious, but has to be done. My daughter, Olivia, LOVES doing data entry in UtilityDirect.
DATA ENTRY IS FUN!!!!
No child labor laws were broken making this meme.
![Page 20: Energy Management Best Practices - SchoolDude](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022110200/55c56e29bb61eb24538b45cc/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Utility Bill Automation ServiceEntire Educational Organization
- Map Actual Bill Accounts with Bill Accounts in UtilityDirect.- Service Looks for new Bills on an ongoing basis- Bills get entered into UtilityDirect automatically- Error checks are performed and communicated
![Page 21: Energy Management Best Practices - SchoolDude](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022110200/55c56e29bb61eb24538b45cc/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
Two Types of Benchmarking
Entire Educational Organization
- What was used overall?- What was spent overall?- Was there improvement or regression?- What were the factors
Individual Buildings
-What was used for this Building?- What was spent for this Building?- Was there improvement or regression for this Building?- What were the factors for this Building
Overall
Specific
![Page 22: Energy Management Best Practices - SchoolDude](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022110200/55c56e29bb61eb24538b45cc/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
How do I Benchmark?
-Source EUI:(Source Energy Use Intensity) The total amount of all the raw fuel required to operate your property, including losses that take place during generation, transmission, and distribution of the energy divided by a building’s square footage.
What is EUI and KBTU?
-Site EUI: (Site Energy Use Intensity) Site Energy is the amount of all the energy your property consumes on-site, as reported on your utility bills divided by a building’s square footage. Use site energy to understand how the energy use for an individual property has changed over time.
-KBTU/Square Foot: This is the same as Energy Use Intensity and is one thousand British Thermal Units, divided by a Building’s square footage.
![Page 23: Energy Management Best Practices - SchoolDude](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022110200/55c56e29bb61eb24538b45cc/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
How do I Benchmark?
-Look at Site EUI or KBTU/SF-Measure each Major Utility Individually
(Electric, Natural Gas, Water)
-Choose a Baseline Year to Start. Do some research to figure out one that will work.
-One Year might be a lot better or a lot worse If you have the data in UtilityDirect, it will be a lot easier.
-Set a realistic goal: The USDOE says we can save 10% if we are just aware of what we are spending and using. Set a higher goal, maybe 20%.
Overall
![Page 24: Energy Management Best Practices - SchoolDude](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022110200/55c56e29bb61eb24538b45cc/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
Step 2: Pick a Building to Focus on
High Schools Elementary Schools
VS- Larger Size/More Students- More Complicated Spaces- Different Operating Hours- More Technology Integrated
- Smaller Size/Less Students- More Simplified Spaces- Concrete Operating Hours- Less Technology Integrated
![Page 25: Energy Management Best Practices - SchoolDude](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022110200/55c56e29bb61eb24538b45cc/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
Step 2: Pick a Building to Focus on
- Multiple Uses- More Complicated Spaces- Different Operating Hours- More Technology Integrated- Cannot be Energy Star Rated
- Can Be Energy Star Rated- More Simplified Spaces- Concrete Operating Hours- Single Purpose
Dorms

![Page 26: Energy Management Best Practices - SchoolDude](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022110200/55c56e29bb61eb24538b45cc/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
How do I Know which Buildings Need Help?
Rank ThemI would:
-Break them into their different Uses (HS/MS/ES Admin)-Make sure they have complete data for the last 3 FY-Then, Look at their KBTU/ SF for the Last 3 Years- One Step Further: Get their Energy Star Rating- Who can improve the most? This will tell you.- If they have a qualifying Energy Star Score, why would I spend the resources to make it even more energy efficient?
The Buildings with the Lowest Score give you the most opportunity for savings. Prioritize them, but keep an eye on the top performers and average ones. They can be addressed last. Stop the Bleeding with the bad ones.
![Page 27: Energy Management Best Practices - SchoolDude](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022110200/55c56e29bb61eb24538b45cc/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
How do I Know which Buildings Need Help?
The Buildings with the lowest Energy Star Score give you the most opportunity for savings. Prioritize them, but keep an eye on the top performers and average ones. They can be addressed last. Stop the bleeding with the bad ones.
![Page 28: Energy Management Best Practices - SchoolDude](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022110200/55c56e29bb61eb24538b45cc/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
How do I Know which Buildings Need Help? Then, I would:
- Make Behavioral Improvements First (Minimal Investment of Resources)- Lights and HVAC off when unoccupied.- Personal Appliances minimized.- Technology Assets off when not being used at the end of each day.

How do I Know which Buildings Need Help? Then, I would:
Look at Simple Fixes that are Relatively Inexpensive
- Is the Building Sealed Properly? (Windows and Doors)- Are the Set Points Optimized and are the Building Automation
Controls tuned properly?- Are we changing HVAC Filters on a regular basis?- Tying Facility Scheduling to BAS through SchoolDude FSD and FSA.

How do I Know which Buildings Need Help? Then, I would:
- Examine making larger investments in improving major building systems- Efficient Lighting (T8s/T5s/LED) Retrofit- Updated HVAC Systems that are more efficient than existing ones.- Occupancy Sensors/Computer Power Mgmt. Systems- New Roof/Glazings/Overall Envelope Improvements.
- ASHRAE Level I, II, and III Building Audits- Performance Contracting
Major Retrofits andCapital Improvements
![Page 33: Energy Management Best Practices - SchoolDude](https://reader038.fdocuments.in/reader038/viewer/2022110200/55c56e29bb61eb24538b45cc/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
Step 3: Evaluate the Results
How do I Know which Buildings Need Help?
- Run Reports and compare where we started with where we are now.
-Did we improve? Great! How much? Tell everyone what you did, how much you improved, and then move on to the next opportunity.
-Did we stay the same? Is there anything else we can do differently? Is there something we forgot.
- Did we get worse? Time to consult Experts
-What you do for one building may not work for another. That is why you have to look at each one individually.
