use in the 1960s using tanks called back boilers which were at the back of fireplaces filled with water.

• When there was a fire lighting the water would warm up and would then be used to heat the home

• Gas was discovered in Kinsale during the 1980s and so people were able to get gas central heating

• During the 1980s the government banned coal in the amin cities because it caused a lot of smog
