Relationships in ecosystemsRe-capIn a previous lesson 3 different relationshipsbetween organisms were studied.

What is competition?

Competition, Predation and Parasitism.

What were the 3 relationships?

Energy in Ecosystems

Today we are looking at two types of competition:

Interspecific and Intraspecific

Success criteria

• Be able to define each one.• Be able to explain the difference between the two.

Energy in Ecosystems

Competition

When does competition occur?

What type of resources do organisms compete for?

When organisms require the same or similar resources

Light, water, food, space, reproductive mates

Competition can be either Interspecific or Intraspecific.

Energy in Ecosystems

Interspecific competition

This occurs between members of different species in an ecosystem who require similar resources.

Examples are red/grey squirrels, brown/rainbow troutThe organisms require similar but not exactly the same resources.

Energy in Ecosystems

Intraspecific competition

This occurs between members of the same species in an ecosystem who require the same resources.

This often more intense as the same resources areneeded.

Examples are robins in a garden or rabbits in a field.
