• Wood have been used as the most important energy resources in heating and cooking.
• Although the use of wood has mainly changed and wood has gained very importance as raw material for construction, paper production, chemical substance, the half of wood production in the world, is still used for cooking and heating.

• The main reason of environmental pollution and climate change is fossil fuels.
• The world is looking for alternative renewable energy resources that cause less pollution to the environment.
• The prices of petroleum and natural gas are getting higher
• Fossil energy sources are about to run out.
Why Renewable Energy ?
4
• At the Fifth Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forest in Europe, held in Warsaw 2007, resolution 1 (W1) was declarated: Forest, Wood and Energy.
• Forests biomass, wood processing residues and recovered wood represent important sources of renewable energy and can reduce greenhouse gass emissions by replacing fossil fuels.

State of the renewable energy in the EUThe met of energy demand;
• 22% in Finland,
• 18% in Sweden,
• 14% in Austria is from biomas
• EU climate targets "20 20 20 by 2020
• reduce EU greenhouse gas emissions by 20% (and by 30% as part of a global climate agreement)
• raise the share of renewable energy to 20% in the EU with 10% of biofuels in transport fuel in each country
• increase energy efficiency by 20%
• EU has published Renewable Energy Directive (2009/28/EC),
6
• The members of International Energy Agency (IEA) have started major projects to meet their 25‐50 % energy demand for biomass by 2050s.
• For this purpose US 100, Canada 40 and EU member states 20 million hectares of land areas have allocated for energy forests and energy agriculture.
• According to the IEA reports, minimum 4%, maximum 12% the demand of energy could be meet by renewable energy resources.
World’s Targets on Biomass
7
• Today in the world the most important energy resources are fossil originated resources such as petroleum, natural gas and coal.
• Turkey is poor in terms of those resources and depends on abroad.
• 78 % of the energy is met by the imports. For this, annualy an average of 50 billion $ is spent.
• The available biomass amount in Turkey is around 117 million tons. In case of its assesment it will be met approximately annual 32 Mtoep.
• It is estimated that total available bioenergy potential is about 17.2 million ton‐equal petroleum.

Biomass Applications in Turkey
Çaycuma Paper Mill generates its daily 10 MW energy need from the wood barks which are the waste of the materials used in paper production.

Heating energy need of Aydınpınar Forest Sub‐district administration building and 4 public housing will be provided with unused residues emerged after harvesting. It is estimated that usage of 250 kg biomass per day will be enough to heat both the administration building and the public housings.

Conclusion
There are 5-7 million tonn wood residues that we can not evaluate in our forests.
These residues have a potantial which makes a forest fire bigger and hotter. (We got a bad experience last year. )
We aim at;• Using the wood residues power generation in local settlements and forest villages. (We cooperate TUBİTAK Projects with METU)•Using wood residues instead of coal.
