• Conserving energy is the need of the hour.
• Efforts towards minimizing consumption
are being made.
• In such situations, technologies need to be
developed that can help reduce the usage.
• Planning should be done to make usage of
energy most effectively.
H o w w e c o n s u m e
• We consume energy, mostly the
conventional forms in our home.
• We run our appliances.
• Almost all kinds of activity ranging from
pumping water to cooking requires energy.
We w a s t e
• While using energy we tend to waste
some of it.
• Its commonly seen that consumption is
taken for granted.
• We don’t always mind when we see
energy being spent for nothing.
• But this indeed is a serious problem!
1. Awareness must be developed about our
dwindling resources and the effects of
over consumption.
2. We must on our part try our best not to
waste energy.
3. Thirdly, we must do all possible things to
manage our activities such that we can
stop being helpless when it comes to
conserve energy!
So we ought to build our homes, our offices,
our hospitals, our schools and all other
building such that energy is being used
most efficiently.
G r e e n b u i l d i n g• Green buildings are building constructed
keeping in mind the energy issues.
• Basically, they are eco-friendly buildings.
• Green building make use of non-
conventional energy resources as far as
possible.
• Green buildings are designed keeping in
mind all kinds of methods that can save
energy.

• In class rooms- mostly the class rooms have 4-5 tube
lights and 4 fans.
• In laboratories-laboratories require at least 6 tube lights
and 4-6 fans. In certain laboratories like computer
laboratories, biotechnology laboratory air conditioning
systems are in use. The computer laboratories also have
nearly 20-25 systems.
• In administrative rooms- the administrative rooms
generally have 4 tube lights, 4 fans, 1-2 computers,
Xerox machines, A.Cs etc.
O u r S c h o o l -
• The class rooms are not well lit and tube
lights are required even when it is bright
outside.
• This causes a lot of wastage. If the
building would have been built taking into
consideration the lighting factors, it might
have been possible to do without lights
during day time or at least less number of
lights could have been used.

t o b e p l a n n e d• The class rooms generally have windows
just on one side of the room.
• Windows must be on both sides.
• Skylights must be provided as well.
• There should be larger windows.
A COOL ENVIRONMENT
• The school environment can be made cooler by construction of pools around the building.
• The water after use can be treated to some extend and can be reused in those pools.
• The recycled water might also be used for gardening purposes.
• Proper ventilation of the rooms can be done by providing larger windows.

• Rooftops are generally out of bounds for
children and remain vacant and useless.
• Instead, the rooftops can be utilized to a
huge extent.
• The dependency over electricity from
conventional sources can be reduced by
inserting solar panels on the rooftop.

e n e r g y• Solar energy is the way to go!
• It is available to us abundantly and can
be easily converted into usable forms.
• With ample development in this
technology, it has become affordable as
well.
O u r c o n c e p t s
• Lighting requires lot of electricity.
• In our green building, solar power is used
for lighting due to its abundance and cost
effectiveness.
• Solar panels consisting of solar cells are
common. We on the other hand would like
to have solar panels that are see through
so that we can have them on our windows.
• Solar panels consisting of solar cells are common. We on the other hand would like to have solar panels that are see through so that we can have them on our windows instead of glass panes.
• The building needs to be planned withample windows so that lighting would be abundant during day time and no artificial lights will be needed while the sun is out.
• We today, cannot do without Fans and air
conditioner.
• we spend energy on it.
• We can plan our building such that it
would facilitate the flow of natural air into
the building.
• Directions should be carefully considered
to maximize the flow of air.
• Cooling of air can be done with the help of
evaporation.
• Water around the building will be enough
for that.
• To prevent direct sunlight on walls,
mosses can be grown on a mesh right
beside the walls which are exposed to
sunlight for the maximum time.
• The mosses may have a secondary use
as well.

• Its ordinary that during hot summer days,
the roof heats up.
• Rooftop gardening is something that can
be extremely effective in reducing the
heat. And it will also mean space
utilization.

Heat pumps provide winter heating by extracting heat from a
source and transferring it into a building.
In summer, the greenhouse is cooled with cold ground
water. This heats the water in the aquifer which can
become a warm source for heating in winter. The
combination of cold and heat storage with heat pumps can
be combined with water/humidity regulation.
• Geothermal energy , the energy possessed by earth
can help us manage our electricity consumption better.
• Geothermal energy systems can be inserted in houses
to help the house stay warm in winters and cool in
summers.
• The air is cooler and the soil hotter during
winters. So the heat from the soil can be
conducted using pipes which can heat our
homes.
• During summer the temperature on the surface
is higher that the temperature underground. So
the system will take the hot air and cool it and
give out cooler air.

h a r v e s t i n g• The school uses lot of water.
• Schools are generally dependent upon
water supplies from outside.
• Instead, the school can have a water
harvesting system that can help reduce
the dependence over supplied water and
can utilize the huge amount of water that
comes down as rain.

• The water we use in our toilets and
kitchens are generally drained out. Instead
we can set up a system of water
purification so that the water can be used
in gardening at least.

K I T C H E N S• In our kitchens, we have refrigerators, ovens,
toasters, electric cookers, dishwashers etc.
• Fossil fuels are also used to a huge extent in our
kitchens.
• It is important that we are careful not to waste
energy in our kitchen.
• Appliances that require less energy must be
preferred.

w a s t e m a n a g e m e n t• The bio waste can be reused.
• A bio-fuel plant can be set up which would
use composting substances to generate
methane.
• The methane so generated can be used
for cooking as well as in vehicles.

w a s t a g e• It often happens that even though the
room is vacant, the appliances may still be
running.
• This causes a lot of wastage.
• Intelligent Electricity systems consisting
of sensors and processing equipments are
readily available in the market which can
be used.

e n e r g y u s a g e• Sensor can be very helpful in schools.
• Sensors would help in automatic lighting and
cooling when needed and would automatically
be switched off when energy is not needed.
• It can also be used to increase or decrease the
intensity of lights and fans as per requirement on
its own.
• Sensors at the entrances of
classrooms can monitor the
presence of people in it and
turn on lights accordingly.
Cooling can be done by
sensing the temperature.
