Integrated Approach to Energy
Efficient Building Design
Integrated Approach to Energy Efficient Building Design
The Integrated Design Process
Integrated design, is a design process where each component is considered
part of a greater whole.
All buildings require integration, at the early stages of the design process because, they involve
coordination of complex, interdependent services.
Integrated Approach to Energy Efficient Building Design
Sustainable design is the thoughtful integration of architecture with Structural, Civil, Electrical,
Mechanical, Plumbing and Fire Engineering.
Integrated Approach to Energy Efficient Building Design
1) Architectural Interactions:
Integration of HVAC Design Solutions
2) Structural & Civil Interactions:
3) Electrical Interactions:
4) Plumbing Interactions:
5) Fire Protection Interactions:
The best building designs result from the
early integration of MEP/FP design with the
structural and architectural plans
Integrated Approach to Energy Efficient Building Design
• Well designed electrical system has to be done in coordination with other engineers to cater to external &
internal lighting, office equipment, elevators, communication system, Fire alarm, BMS, Life safety
components, HVAC systems, pumping system and to provide enough Back-up power for emergency
• Design of plumbing system for a tall building has to tackle mainly the pressure problems in piping
systems as well as at water fixture levels i.e. having adequate pressure on the top floors and limiting the
pressure on lower levels for which building is divided into multiple vertical zones (15 to 20 floors) at design
stage.
• HVAC Engineer has to provide details of chilled water, hot water and condenser water requirements to
plumbing engineer for estimate of total water requirement for the project.
• Well-integrated facade technology together with innovative HVAC systems results in significant energy
savings and improves indoor air comfort in all buildings.
• Buildings should be designed to have an Integrated Building Management System (BMS) which
coordinates and controls HVAC, fire & safety, lighting, security, communication and other systems for
better efficiency.
Integrated Approach to Energy Efficient Building Design
Energy Efficient Building Design (A Case Study)
K. G. HOUSE – A CASE STUDY

• HVAC System with very low power consumption • Static Storage System designed since inception still working efficiently • Efficient Dust Extraction system for Diamond processing • Laser cooling system working 24 Hours • Energy Consumption Monitoring Using Power Analyzer • Under Floor Air Distribution System at Atrium Level • Adequate Indoor Air Quality for workers • Well integrated BMS helps in controlling and monitoring Energy consumption
Energy Efficient HVAC System :
K. G. HOUSE – A CASE STUDY
• Energy efficient VFD driven screw Chiller of 375 TR having lowest IKW/TR of 0.32 • Chiller with Tri-Rotor Screw Compressor selected to cater to Internal load variation and External Wet Bulb variation • Chiller used for charging the Static Storage system at night and cater to building loads during peak hours for energy savings • Natural stratification type Static Storage system has capacity of 850 TRH. • The Chilled Water TES tank made of RCC and insulated by high density EPS material. • The five compartments of tank connected by specially designed Diffusers to transfer chilled water in to and out of the TES tank. • The Tanks once charged, can supply the chilled water to the building. •When tanks are discharging the Chiller as well as the pumps can be switched-off along with the CT fans.
