Energy Demand ManagementUse less energy during peak hours

WHAT IS IT? Energy Demand Management is a service which is designed to encourage the consumer to use less energy during peak hours, or to move the time of energy use to off-peak times such as night time and weekends where possible.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? ■ Reductions in energy bills

■ Reductions in peak power prices for electricity

■ No impact on building performance or the working environment

■ Potential new sources of revenue from participation in multiple demand response services

■ No out-of-pocket expense for a site qualified to participate in Automated Demand Response with a BEMS installed

■ Revenue generated can be invested in new energy efficiency projects, or BEMS upgrade opportunities

WHAT TREND CAN OFFER? Trend offers three types of Energy Demand Management services.

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM IT? ■ Commercial Offices & Retail: HVAC, Variable Speed Drives, Pumps, Fans, Hot Water Boilers

■ Refrigeration: Super Market Refrigeration, Cold Storage & Chillers

■ Hospitals & Universities: HVAC, Variable Speed Drives, Pumps, Fans, Hot Water Boilers, CHP

■ Airports: HVAC, Variable Speed Drives, Pumps, Fans, Hot Water Boilers, CHP, Standby Generators

■ IT & Telecoms: HVAC, Standby Generators ■ Manufacturing: HVAC, Variable Speed Drives, Pumps, Fans, Hot Water Boilers, Compressed Air

OPTIMISED ENERGY MANAGEMENTOptimised Energy Management is implemented through smart application of the Trend system. When the HVAC plant, and specifi cally AHU’s, FCU’s, A/C units and chillers are fully controlled by a Trend BEMS, these items can be switched off when there is low demand i.e. over the lunch period when occupancy in a building is often reduced. The control strategy in the BEMS controller is modifi ed to ensure that occupant comfort conditions and overall building operation are not compromised, with safeguards put in place to ensure the building conditions never fall below agreed parameters.

DUOS CHARGES AVOIDANCEDistribution Use of System (DUoS) charges can have a massive impact on how much a building spends on electricity, as DUoS charges will typically account for 10-15% of an electricity bill. Unfortunately, it is not possible to ‘shop around’ for the most cost effective DUoS provider as the rates are determined by geographical location and are non-negotiable. The best way to reduce the impact of the DUoS charges is to be smart with how and when electricity is used at different times of the day. Trend can implement a control strategy to maintain comfort conditions while lowering, or even turning off, certain elements of the HVAC plant via the Trend BEMS during peak DUoS charge periods. To ensure that comfort conditions and overall building operation are not compromised, safeguards are put in place so that the building never falls below agreed parameters.

AUTOMATED DEMAND RESPONSE Automated Demand Response (ADR) temporarily shifts a site’s energy load during peak demand hours to off-peak periods, thus alleviating the load burden on the National Grid during peak times. Reducing peak energy demand not only allows more electricity to be produced by cheaper base load generation but also saves the cost of building additional power plants to meet critical peak demand. Automated Demand Response can be extended to add additional services such as Frequency Response, TRIAD Avoidance and Balancing Services such as Reserve.

■ Frequency Response: A site has the potential to earn extra income from its assets by automatically adjusting the consumption in real-time to help balance the load on the National Grid. Response time from site is required within seconds.

■ Peak Avoidance: A site can reduce energy costs by shifting consumption away from times of peak demand to avoid high energy costs for TRIAD charges, which have increased 378% since 2009.

■ Balancing Service: A site can generate extra income from its assets by reducing, increasing or shifting electricity consumption in real time to help balance the load on the National Grid. Response time from site is required within minutes.
