There are 4 types of power stations in Lithuania:

• Fossil-fuel power station

• Hydroelectric station

• Pumped-storage hydroelectricity

• Nuclear power station

Stages of a fossil-fuel power Station

The types of fuel used in Fossil-fuel power station generally are: fossil fuels

( coal, oil, natural gas or oil shale) municipal and industrial waste peat biofuel

Fossil-fuel power station types in Lithuania

• condensing power station

• thermoelectric power station

The first fossil-fuel power station was build in Klaipėda,

1929

The thermoelectric power station in Vilnius started it’s

work on 1951.

Ecology

The nuclear power station is set up on the coast of the lake Drūkšiai

The reactor of Ignalina nuclear power station needs being cooled all the time (because of the chemical reactions in it). So the water of the lake Drūkšiai helps to fulfill this task. That’s why the temperature of the water in the lake is higher than it used to be before the nuclear station was set up there. The water does not freeze in winter. The flora and fauna of the lake changed a little bit.

Advantages of the nuclear energy:

• It doesn’t pollute the environment with CO2 gases;

• The cost of fuel that you need for the electric energy is not big;

• The fuel for that kind of energy is found in politically stable countries, you can stockpile them for longer use;

• It encourages scientific progress;• There are relatively little waste;• Little operational expenses;• The possibility to produce electrical and thermal energy.
