Launching Map, Query Editor, and Output windows

Usingthe left pane of the IHSEDINDesktop toolbar, launcheither a newMapwindoworQueryEditor, or opena savedfile. Files savedusing theMapwindow canbe openedusingonly theMapwindow. Files savedusingQueryEditor or anOut-putwindow (Browse,DataCard,Graph, Export ) canbe openedinQueryEditor or inanyOutputwindow.

WhenOpen is selected in the left pane, up to20of themost recentlyaccessedmapor queryfiles appear in the right pane.Push-pinfunctionality ( ) enables youtopinparticular files so that theyremain in the list of recentlyusedfiles insteadofbeingreplacedbymore recentlyaccessedfiles. Youcanalsobrowse for a file whenit does not appear in this list.

WhenlaunchingEDIN, if all of the available licenses are inuse, the user name andmachine name of users currently loggedin toEDIN appears. Youmayinquire whether one of themcanclose their session.

To launchMap,QueryEditor,andOutputwindows

Tolauncha newMapwindoworQueryEditor, using the left pane, clickNew andthen in the right pane clickeitherNewMap orNewQuery .ORfromtheFilemenu, point toNew, and thenclickeitherMap orQuery .

1. Todisplay the results of a queryormappreviouslysaved todisk, using the left pane, clickMap,Query, or one of theOutputwindows (Browse ,DataCard ,Graph , Export ).ORfromtheFilemenu, point toOpen, and thenclickMaporQuery. Youcanalsoopena querypreviouslysaved todiskusinganyOutputwindow (Browse ,DataCard ,Graph , Export ).

2. Either double-click the desiredfile in the RecentFiles pane, or for a file that hasn't beenaccessedrecently, clickMore ,navigate to the file, and thenclickOpen.



Aboutpush-pin functionality

Upto20mapand20queryfiles appear in the RecentFiles pane of the EDINDesktop toolbar. The name of files that areopenedreplace the name of the least recentlyaccessedfiles in the RecentFiles pane. Toensure that the name of a file thatappears in the RecentFiles pane isn't replaced, click the push-pin( ) that appears to the left of a file name.

File nameswithanactive push-pin( ) aren't replacedbynames ofmore recentlyaccessedfiles.

Pinninga file doesn't change the order inwhich it appears in the RecentFiles pane. File names appear in the order inwhichtheywere accessedfrommost to least recent. The RecentFiles pane is updatedwithfiles fromyour current sessionas yousave them.

MapandQueryfiles deletedfromdiskusingWindowsExplorer still appear in the RecentFiles pane until eclipsedbythename of amore recentlyaccessedfile.

Customizing the interface

Selectwhich toolbars appear invariouswindows andselect toolbar displayproperties. Youcan't customize the IHSEDINDesktop toolbar.Modifiedsettings onlyapply to the specific window fromwhichyoulaunchedthe Customizationdialogbox,andonlyfor the current session.

Toshoworhidetoolbars

1.Using thewindow tomodify, fromtheToolsmenu, clickCustomize.

TheCustomization: Toolbars dialogboxappears.

2. Selectwhether the Standard toolbar ( , , ),DataTools ( , , , , , , , ), and toolbars specificto the currentwindow appear, and thenclickClose.

NOTE:Dependingonthewindow fromwhichyoulaunchedtheCustomizationdialogbox, different toolbarsmaybeavailable; for example, Browse (Template, , ), orGraph(Mode, Template, , , , , Graph/S-preadsheet).

Tosetmenuandtoolbarbehavior

1.Using thewindow tocustomize, fromtheToolsmenu, clickCustomize, and thenclick theOptions tab.



TheCustomization:Options dialogboxappears.

2. Selectwhether toshow every itemthat appears inamenueach time it's selected; otherwise, onlycommonselections andthose youfrequentlymake appear. ClickingResetmyusage dataerases all yourmenuselectionhistoryso that allmenuitems appear the first time youdisplayeachmenu.

3. Select the size of icons displayed in toolbars, whether todisplayScreenTipswhenyouhover your cursor over toolbaritems, andselect displayeffects formenus suchaswhether theyfade in, and thenclickClose.

NOTE:These settings onlyapply to the specific window fromwhichyoulaunchedtheCustomizationdialogbox, andonlyfor the current session.

Changing default units

The unit systemfor the current sessionappears in the lower-right corner ofmostwindows except theMap.

SwitchbetweenMetric, Imperial, andOilfield in the IHSEDINDesktop toolbar, in theMapwindoworQueryEditor, or inanyOutputwindow. The unit systemchanges throughoutEDIN for the current session.

The current unit systemisn't savedwithmaps or queries saved todisk, sowhenyouopensavedfiles, they're displayed inwhatever unit systemis selectedfor the current session.

Using theMap

About theMapwindow

Use themaptoview your area of interest. Display the layers of interest andnavigate using the zoomandpantools. The

Inspect bar at the bottomof thewindowdisplays informationabout items frominspectable layers. UsingInspectmode ( ),clickan itemonthemaptodisplay itsDataCard.

Select items onthemaptouse inQueryEditor or inOutputwindows. There are severalways toselect items onthemapforoutput toanotherwindow.Results frominspectable layers are retrievedfirst by those youclickedwhile pressingCTRL orSHIFT, next by those youencircledwitha selectionpolygon, andfinallyby thosewithin the currentmapextents.

Making layersvisible

Visible layers are renderedonthemapwhenthemapscale iswithina layer's visibilitycutoffs. Evenif inspectability, whichenables youtoworkwitha layer's objects, is cleared the layer is still renderedonthemap.However, if visibility is cleared,inspectability is alsocleared.

Checkboxes appear at both the individual layer andthe layer grouplevels in the LayerLegend. Enable or disable visibility foran individual layer using that layer's checkbox, or do it for all the layers beneatha grouplayer byselectingor clearing thecheckboxfor that grouplayer.

Followingare the various states of visibility:

At the individual layer level, signifies a layer is visible. At the layer grouplevel, signifies all of the layerswithinalayer groupare visible.At the individual layer level, signifies a layer isn't visible. At the layer grouplevel, signifies all of the layerswithinalayer grouparen't visible.Onlyappears at the layer grouplevel andsignifies that some, but not all of the layerswithina layer groupare visible.



Just because a layer is selected , it doesn'tmeanthat layer is automaticallyvisible on themap. Themapmust alsobezoomedtoa scale atwhich the layer is set toappear. For example, if theWells layer is set toappear at a zoomscale of1:250,000, even thoughits visibilitycheckboxmaybe selected, itwon't appear on themapif your zoomscale is greater than1:250,000.

Items alsowon't be visible on themapunless a symbol, pattern, or fill is definedfor those items. For example, youmayneedtoselect thewell layer in the LayerLegendandthenclickLayer >Symbolize todefine awell headsymbolbeforewellsappear on themap.Youcandetermine how the itemwill be renderedbyviewingthe symbol, pattern, or fill adjacent to thelayer name in the Symbolize columnin the LayerLegend.

Whenyouselect the visibilitycheckbox, a layer alsobecomes inspectable.Whenyouclear the visibilitycheckbox, inspect-ability is alsodisabled.

TIP:Themaprefreshesmore quicklywithfewer layers displayed.

Tochangewhether a layer isvisibleon themap

Doone of the following:

Select the checkboxnext toa layer or a sub-layer name tomake it visible on themap, and thenclickApply.Clear the checkboxnext toa layer or a sub-layer name todisable visibility, and thenclickApply.

NOTE:Youmustmake a layer inspectable inorder toselect its objects or display theminOutputwindows.

Making layers inspectable

Layerswithunderlyingdata canbemade inspectable so that informationabout their objects appears in the Inspect bar belowthemap, so that clickingan itemona layer launches aDataCard, andso that items selected in that layer appear ineither anOutputwindowor inQueryEditor. A layer canonlybemade inspectable whenit'swithin its visible scale cutoffs.

Certainculture layers, suchas prospects, have underlyingdata that canbe inspectedanddisplayed inDataCards, but thatcan't be queried.

Ifmade inspectable, a layer is alsovisible.Wheninspectability is disabled, the layer remains visible so that it's still renderedonthemap.Queryresults canbe attached to themapas a layer andinspected. For details, seeRelated topics below.

Followingare the different states of inspectability:

At the individual layer level, signifies that a layer is inspectable. At the layer grouplevel, signifies that all of the lay-erswithin that layer groupare inspectable.At the layer grouplevel, signifies that onlysome of the layerswithin that layer groupare inspectable.At the individual layer level, signifies that layer isn't currently inspectable. At the layer grouplevel, signifies that noneof the layerswithin that layer groupare currently inspectable. Click it to fill the iconandmake the layers inspectable.A simple blackoutline indicates the layer or layer groupis currentlyoutside its visible scale cutoffs.

With themapzoomedinenoughthat the inspectabilitysymbol for the layer tomake inspectable appearswitha blue out-line insteadof a blackoutline , click inspectability to the right of a layer name or a layer groupname sothat itappears as a filledblue circle .

Positioning theLayerLegend

Move the LayerLegendas a floating toolbar outside of theMapwindowor dockit on the left, right, top, or bottomof theMapwindow. EDIN remembers yourLayerLegendpreferences betweensessions.

Toposition theLayerLegend

1. Click the LayerLegendtitle bar as depictedbelow anddrag the LayerLegendover theMapwindow.

Placement controls appear alongall four sides inside of theMapwindow andalso in the center of theMapwindowas depictedbelow.



2.Drag the LayerLegendover a placement control todockthe LayerLegendin the impliedarea of theMapwindow.The quadrant of theMapwindow inwhich the LayerLegendwill be dockedis highlighted in theMapwindow.

3. Release themouse button toplace the LayerLegend.Toposition the LayerLegendoutside of theMapwindow, drag the LayerLegendoutside of theMapwindow.

Zoomingmaps

Zoomthemapinor out bya factor (2, 4, 6, etc.), zoomin toa rectangle youdraw, zoomto the extents of themap, zoomtothe previousmapextents, or zoomtoeither the extents of a queryaddedto themap, or to the extents of an individual layerwithin that query.Whena query is initiallyaddedto themap, themapzooms to the extents of that query.Whenthe query isupdatedandits extents change, themapzoomextents change accordingly.

Change themaptoa specific scale byselectingamapscale froma list or by typing the scale ina text box.



The defaultmapprojectionchanges as yourmapscale changes.

Zoomtoextentsofaqueryorquery layer

Witha queryaddedto themap(seeRelatedTopics below), using theMapLegend, right-clickeither the querygroup, oran individual layerwithin that query, andfromthe contextmenu, clickeitherZoomtoQueryExtent, orZoomtoLayer Extent.

Measuringmapareas

Measure anarea, distance, or an itemonthemap.Displaymeasurements invarious reference systems (kilometers,miles,decimaldegrees, etc.)

Tomeasuremapareas

1. ClickMeasure ( ) in theMaptoolbar.



TheMeasure dialogboxappears.

2. Format the display that appears in theMeasure dialogboxbasedonthe followingoptions:- snap the points of the line or the polygonthat's beingused tomeasure to the nearest object.- sumthe lengths, perimeters, andareas of either a line or polygonthat's beingused tomeasure, anddisplay the sums at

the bottomof theMeasure dialogbox.- select units for distance or area.

3. Select the desiredmeasurement tool:-measure bothsegment andtotal distance usinga single ormulti-segment line.-measure segment, area, andperimeter usinga polygon.-measure a point, line, or polygonthat's displayedonthemap. The object type determineswhat information is dis-

played. Point: XY coordinates; line: length; polygon: perimeter andarea.4. Dependingonthemeasurement tool selectedabove, either draw the line or polygon, or clickanobject on themap.Ifmeasuringusinga line or polygon, after completing themeasurement, either double-click the cursor or pressESC toendthat particularmeasurement.The results appear in theMeasure dialogbox.

5. Toclear the results displayed in theMeasure dialogbox, click .6. ClickMeasure ( ) in theMaptoolbar toendmeasuringmode.

Changingmapprojections

Coordinate reference systems linka coordinate systemwitha datumtoshow the relationshipof the coordinate systemto thesurface andshape of the Earth.

Mapprojections plot features froma three-dimensional sphere ontoa two-dimensionalmap.Mapprojections relyona fixedreference point calleda datumtoperformtheir calculations. There are numerous projections for different geographic areasandat differentmapscales, eachwith their ownunique datum. For example, at largermapscales, EDINdisplaysmaps usingthe plate carree projectionandtheWGS84datum.

Themapprojectionautomaticallychanges toone of several defaults as yourmapcenter point andscale changes, but youcanoverride these defaults byselectinga differentmapprojectionanda different transformationalgorithmif data appears shifted.Selections affect bothmapdisplayandmapexportswhenyourmapscale iswithin the range towhich the selectedprojectionpertains.

Tochangeamapprojection

1. FromtheMapmenu, clickProjection.TheMapProjectiondialogboxappears.

2. Fromthe drop-downlist, select the desiredmapprojection.If available, select a transformationwithwhich toalign the coordinates to the above projection.Only transformations rel-evant to the chosenprojectionappear.YoucanalsoselectNoTransformation.Drag the slider to the right to reduce the opacityof the dialogboxso that objects below the dialogboxbecome visible.

NOTE:Layerswithmixeddatums aren't transformed.

Themapprojectionandtransformationappliedappears in the status bar below themap.

Themapis savedwith the projectiondefinedabove. If [Default] is selected, themapopenswithone of several pro-jections dependingonthemapscale. ClickMapprojectionvs. scale cutoffs for details.

Selectingmap items

Select items onthemapbyclicking the individual itemswhile pressingCTRL orSHIFT in Inspectmode ( ), or byencirc-ling themwitha polygon( , , ).

Selected items canbe addedas a uniquemaplayer or passed toeitherQueryEditor or anOutputwindow.Whenpassed toanotherwindow, the pass includes items that are either individuallyselected, surroundedbya polygon, orwithin the visibleextents of the currentmap(in that order of preference). Inorder toappear in thewindow, the layer that contains the selecteditemsmust be set to Inspect ( ) in themapLayerLegend.

Items are sorted in theOutputwindow in the same order inwhichyouCTRL-CLICK them. This order is alsomaintainedwhenyoupass the items fromoneOutputwindow toanother. Eventhoughthe order inwhichyouCTRL-CLICK items ismaintainedas the order inwhich todisplay themwithin their data type, the data types themselves are sortedalphabetically inthe receivingOutputwindows.

Whenat least one itemis selectedbyCTRL orSHIFT-CLICK, the Deselect button( ) in themaptoolbar becomes act-ive. Click it toclear all selected items, or simplyCTRLorSHIFT-CLICK a single selected itemtoclear.

A checkboxappears in the Filters columnof the LayerLegendalongside layers that canbe filteredas depictedbelow.Clickor clear this checkboxtospecifywhether the criteria youcreatedapplies to that layer.

Tofiltermaps

1. In themaptoolbar, select a date fromwhich tofilter.

2. In the Interval boxes select first a unit, and then in the boxto the left of it select a value bywhich tomultiply that unit.For example, youcouldselectYear in the right-most interval boxandthen type 1 in the boxto the left of it to jumpbyintervals of 1year. The date fromwhichyoujumpis the Filter date youdefinedabove.

Importinguser layers

Create a connection toa local or networkeddatabase of shapefiles or File Geodatabase layers. The resultingfiles appear inthe LayerLegendunder theMyLayers node.

Also, attacha savedquery(.xmlquery) to themapas a new layer. Queries appear under theMyQueries node.

Once these layers are attached to themap, clickLayers >Symbolize tochange their displayscales andmapsymbols.

Printingmaps

Once you've set your print page options, youcanprint themaptoa plotter or printer. EDIN doesn't support tiledprinting, inwhicha largemapis automatically tiledacrossmultiple pages. If youneed toused tiledprinting, using theMapwindow zoomintoa portionof the overallmapthatwill fill an8.5x11"page andprint it, thenzoominto the next area tofill the next page andprint it, andsoon.

Printing largescalemaps

Printing600DPI requires a lot ofmemory. The followingsteps are recommendedtooptimize printing large scalemaps:Restart your computer.Keepother applications aside fromEDINDesktopclosed, andforEDIN, displayonly theMapwindow that contains themaptoprint. Keepall otherEDINwindows closed.Dependingonyour operatingsystem, increase the allocatedvirtualmemorysize as follows:32-bit - 4096MB64-bit - 8GBReduce the complexityofmaps byclearing transparencyor by turningoff layers youdon't need toprint.

Like other annotations,with the Select optionenabled in theAnnotation toolbar item,labels for entities canbe draggedanddeleted, and type settings canbe changed. Tocreate different types of labels for dif-ferent entities, change the label postingoptions in the Label dialogboxbefore clickingeach item.

Using the Label dialogbox, select the font style andcolor of the labels, the scales atwhich theyappear, and their placementposition. If youselect scaled labels, the size of the label changes as youzoomthemap.

Whenyouuse theAnnotation>LabelEntities option, the annotationoptions appliedare those configuredusing the Label dia-logbox. If nosettings are appliedfor a type ofmapitem, or if that itemis not set to Inspect the LabelEntityoptioncan't beused.

Labels canbe applied tobothsystemandquery layers. Labels are savedandprintedalongwithyourmap.

Tocreate labels

1. Click toselect the layer name in the LayerLegend.Whenyouselect a layer forwhichyoucanchange the label, the label tool in the LayerLegendtoolbar switches frominactive ( ) toactive ( ).

2. FromtheLayersmenu, clickLabel .The Labeldialogboxappears.

3. Clicka label position in the SelectedLabels pane atwhich topositionanattribute label and thenclickanattribute in theAvailable Labels pane to the left.

4. Repeat the above step toaddmultiple labels at different positions for an item.5.Using the Textpane, select text properties (font, size, color, style) anda scale range atwhich labels shouldappear, andthenclickOK.

NOTE:Labels for polygonlayers appear inside the polygons onthemap. Labels that are too large tofit inside a poly-gonwon't appear unless youeither zoominor reduce the font size of the label.

Drag the slider to the right to reduce the opacityof the dialogboxso that objects below the dialogboxbecome visible.



Toapply labels inAnnotationmode

1.With the desiredannotationoptions selectedusing the previous procedure, fromtheAnnotationmenuselectLabelEntity ( ).ORFromtheMapmenu, clickAnnotation, and theLabelEntity ( ).

The label appears at the locationclicked.Formattingandcontent for the label information is basedonthe settings defined in the Labeldialogbox. The label sizescales alongwith themapso that it remains visible as youzoominandout.Formapitemswithmultiple labels, for examplewell headswhere youpostmultiple labels aroundthewell symbol,mul-tiple labels canbe applied. The data appears ina single labelwith informationfromdifferent labels appearingonsep-arate lines.Where different fonts are selectedfor different labels, the font selected in the last label youpost is applied toall of the labels.

NOTE: Information in the annotation label isn't connected to the underlyingrelational database fromwhich it's ori-ginallydrawn, sodata won't remainsynchronizedwith the underlyingrelational data whenyouupdate your data or ifyouswitch the currentmeasurement systembetweenImperial andmetric.

Resizingmapannotations

The total lengthof lines, and the size of rectangles, circles, polygons andellipses is related tomapscale. The size of these ele-ments on the screenchanges as youzoomthemap. Resize these elements relative to themapbydragginga vertex. Circlescanbe resizedbytypinga radius length in the Properties dialogbox.

The size of points and text remains constant as youzoomthemapinor out. Youcanchange the size of these elements byedit-ing their properties.

AboutQueryEditor

Like theMapwindow,QueryEditor is your startingpointwhenworking inanarea.QueryEditor enables youtoselect datatypes (field, gas plant, pipeline,well, etc.), and thenqueryattributes for those data types.

Multiple data types canbe queriedwitha single queryandall the results displayed inoneMapwindoworOutputWindow.

Queryresults canbe savedas a file that contains both the querycriteria and the IDs ofmatching items, or displayed inanOut-putwindoworMapwindow.

After reviewingormodifying the results inaMaporOutputwindow, youcanpush thembackintoQueryEditor toaddaddi-tional attributes andcriteria withwhich toquery.

Queryresults saved todiskcanbe openedinQueryEditor or inanyOutputwindow, but can't be openedin theMapwindow,whichrequires additional information thatQueryEditor doesn't save.

Buildingqueries

QueryEditor canbe launchedfromnumerouswindows inEDINbypressing .

WhenyoulaunchQueryEditor fromanotherwindow, it's populatedwith the data type andindividual data items selected inthatwindow. For example, if you launchQueryEditor fromaBrowsewindow inwhichyou've selectedseveralwells, theidentifiers for thosewells appear in theQueryEditorCurrentCriteria pane, and thematchingdata type andattributes areselected in theQueryData Type andin theWellAttributes panes.

Youcanaddadditional data types andattributes to this query tofurther refine your search.

The attribute list on the left side of theQueryEditorwindowupdates basedonthe data type selectedabove andwhenyouselect anattribute beneath the above querydata type, a descriptionof that attribute appears inblue text at the topofthe attribute usage pane,which is to the right of the attribute pane as depictedbelow.

3. Tolocate attributes toaddtoyour query, either double-click the parent name, click , or type the desiredattribute namein the Findbox, and theneither clickFindor pressENTER. ClickFindor pressENTER repeatedly toscroll throughsimilar attribute names.

The features in the criteria selector pane right of the attribute selector list update tocorrespondto the attribute selectedabove. For example, if youselect anattribute that uses a date field, date selectioncontrols appear in the criteria selectorpane as depicted in the below graphic.

4. Type or select the desiredcriteria, and thenclickAdd toattachyour criteria selection to the current querywithan"And"logical operator.

Bydefault, EDIN searches only the latestBiding, Block, Contract andApplications, andOpenAreas data. Tosearchhistoric data aswell for these types, clickIncludeHistoric.For certaindata types, fromthe drop-downlist on theAddbutton, clickeitherAddtoSelected todisplay theAddcriteriatochosenqueries dialogboxwhere youselect the attributes towhich toaddthe criteria, or selectAddtoAll, whichauto-maticallyadds the criteria toall applicable data types. The querycriteria automaticallyapplies toanyRegion, Country,Basin, Participant, orGrid/Locationattributes.

If you're replacinga queryexpressionbydouble-clicking it in the queryexpressionpane,Applyappears insteadofAddandwhenyouclick it, themodifiedcriteria replace the original criteria. If you're changing the variables ina queryexpres-sionbyselecting it and then typingdifferent variables in the pane above the queryexpressionpane,Appendappears andwhenyouclick it the new variables are addedto the existingexpressionwithanORoperator.

TIP:Dependingonthe attribute selectedabove, youmaybe able to type either "?" as a single-characterwildcardor"*" as amultiple-characterwildcard.Whenanattribute supportswildcards, instructions for using themappear in theCriteria Selector pane. Clickwildcardexamples for basic queryexamples. Some attributes that don't acceptwild-cards provide "Startswith" and"Contains" options instead. If your searchstring is "ABC", "Startswith" is equal to"ABC*"while "Contains" is equal to"*ABC*,"where * is one ormore alphanumeric characters.

Toaddadditional criteria withan"And" logical operator so that your queryreturns onlyresults thatmatchbothstate-ments, repeat steps 3and4above.Toaddadditional criteria withan"Or" logical operator so that your queryreturns anyresults thatmatcheither statement,select anexistingcriteria string in the CurrentCriteria pane, type different criteria in the Criteria Selector pane, and thenclickAppend.

Tochange the current criteria, select the statement in the CurrentCriteria pane andclickEdit . Type your changes inthe Criteria Selector pane, and thenclickApply.Toremove a statement fromthe CurrentCriteria pane, select it and thenclickClear .

Attachingqueries tomaps

Attach the results of a query toa new, currentlyopen, or savedmapas a separatemaplayer andthenworkwith the queryitems in theMapwindow andthe samemapfunctionalityavailable toothermaplayers. Althoughdefault symbology, scaling,and labelingalreadyconfiguredfor standardmaplayers is applied toquery layers attached to themap, youcanchange thesesettings for the attachedquery layer todifferentiate it fromthe standard layers.

Clear visibility for the parent layer uponwhich the query is based to inspect ononly the returnedquery items.

Save queries you've attached to themapusing theMapwindowbyselecting the query in the LayerLegend, and thenselect-ingFile >SaveQuery.

Items selectedonthemapcanbe saveddirectlyas a uniquemaplayerwithouthaving topass themout toQueryEditor oranotherOutputwindow first. SeeRelated topics below.

Themapautomaticallyzooms to the extents of a querywhenit's addedto themap, andrefreshes the zoomextentswhentheextents of the querychange.



Toattachqueriestomaps

1.After buildingyour query, in the Results pane, select one ormore results toattach to themapas a layer(CTRL+CLICKorSHIFT+CLICK formultiple selection).

UsingQueryEditor, in the IHSEDINDesktop toolbar, click the arrow besideAddtoMap , andfromthe drop-downlist, clickeitherNewMap, a currentlyopenmap, orBrowse SavedMap.If you've alreadyattacheda query layer toamapthat's still open, youcanupdate the previouslyattached layerwith thelatest queryresults byclickingUpdateMap instead. ClickFilter List to limit the list ofLookupattributes displayedandfromwhichyoucanselect toonly those relevant to the datatypes andattributes you've selectedfor your querysofar. For example, if youselect theFielddata type andthen theHC(hydrocarbon)Type attribute, onlyhydrocarbonLookups applicable to theFielddata type appear. If youfurther select fromtheCountries attributeUnitedKingdom, the HCTypes are further reduced to those usedonly in theUK.

Clear the FilterList checkboxif youdon'twant toapplyLookupFiltering toattributes youare about toselect. EDIN remem-berswhether filteringwas applied toa given lookupandapplies this during the queryprocess.

This orderismaintainedas youmove data groups anditems amongst variousOutputwindows. Tosort all of the items that appear in theDataNavigator insimple alphanumeric order instead, click .

EditingBrowse listdisplay templates

Select a template withpre-definedcolumns toapply to the displaypane as is, ormodifywhichcolumns appear andtheir ordertocreate a unique user template. Create anunlimitednumber of user templates for eachdata type. The template currently inuse or anycolumnreorderingyou've applied in the current session is the layout that appears in theMicrosoftExcel spread-sheetwhenyouexport a Browse List byclickingSendtoExcel in themain toolbar.

Templates appear in the Template drop-downlist sortedalphabeticallywith the names of pre-defined templates coloredblackandthe names of user-defined templates coloredblue.

The pre-defined templates fromwhichyoucanselect dependonthe data types selected inDataNavigator (CTRL+CLICKorSHIFT+CLICK toselectmultiple data types inDataNavigator). The user templates fromwhichyoucanselect dependonboth the data types selected inResultsNavigator and the data type thatwas selectedwhenyouoriginallycreated the usertemplate.

Insteadof customizing templates, youcanshow andhide columns that appear in the displaypane, but unlike user templates,these changes are lostwhenyouclose the current session.



Toeditdisplaytemplates

1. Select a data type inDataNavigatorwithwhich the user template youcreate will be associated, thenbeside the Tem-plate drop-downlist, clickEdit.

The Template Editor dialogboxappears.

2. Select the name of the template tomodify in the Template drop-downlist in the top-left of the dialogbox.The first data itemthat appears in the Template Attributes pane is the left-most columnin the Browse list and the lastitemis the right-most column.

3.Doanyof the following:Toadddata items as columns toa user template, in the Template Attributes pane onthe right, select the data item(column) beforewhich to insert a new data itemandthen in theAvailable Attributes pane onthe left, select the dataitemtoaddandclick .

TIP:Tolocate attributes in theAvailable Attributes pane toaddto the Template Attributes pane, using the boxthatappears above theAvailable Attributes pane, typewords or letters that appear in the attribute name andthenclickFindor pressENTER. ClickFindor pressENTER repeatedly toscroll throughsimilar attribute names.

Toremove data items fromthe current template, in the Template Attributes pane to the right, select a data itemtoremove (CTRL+CLICKorSHIFT+CLICK formultiple selection) andthenclickRemoveAttribute. Toremove all the data items, clickClearAll.Tochange the left-to-right order inwhichone ormore columns appear in the Browse list, select the data items in theTemplate Attributes pane (SHIFT+CLICKorCTRL+CLICK formultiple selection) andclick or . 4. Either clickSave tocreate a user template with the same name as a pre-defined template (thiswon't overwrite the pre-defined template), or type a different name in the Template boxfirst, and thenclickSave. If you'remodifyinga user tem-plate, youmust rename it toavoidoverwriting the original.

Methodologyandassumptions

This LognormalGraphattempts toprovide anestimate of yet-to-findreserves andtheir distributionfor the currentlyselectedbasins.



Aprincipal feature of hydrocarbondistribution is that there are usuallya few large fields anda great number of small ones(left-skewedin the jargonof statisticians). The underlyingassumption in thismethodologyis that fields are discovered inorderof decliningsize, i.e. the bigones are foundfirst. The characteristics of these large, earlydiscoveries are extrapolatedfor thesmaller fields thatwill be foundlater in the explorationphase. This canbe developedintoa theory that states that the timingofa field’s discovery is proportional to its size. However, we recognise that this patterndoes nothold true for all explorationscen-arios, e.g. deep-water exploration. Toaccount for this, we have introduceda RankOffset option that allows larger fields tobeincludedin theYTFanalysis. This feature is documentedfully later on in this topic.

In theGraph, eachfield is assigneda rankbaseduponits size, the Fmaxbeingrank1. It has beenobserved that a plot of logreserves size against logof rankapproximates toa straight line. Ina fullyexploitedbasin inwhichall fields have beendis-covered, all fieldswould lie on the same line.However, ina partiallyexploitedone, the absence of small andmediumfieldsresults in the right-handpart of the curve droppingaway.Where it is believed that themajor discoveries have beenmade,these large fields canbe used toestimate the slope of the line andsocreate a synthetic distributionof the EstimatedTotalReserves (ETR), indicatingdiscoveries thatmayyet bemade. The size of these discoveries, the so-calledYet-to-Findfig-ures, canbe foundonthe Reserves SizeDistributionSpreadsheets. These are calculatedbysubtracting the Reserves toDate(RTD) fromETR.

Onlyfields greater than1MMBOEare includedin the statistics.

TheGraphis a line graphcontaining twoseries of data, the actual reserves andthe estimatedreserves. TheYAxis showsthe Reserves Size inMMBOE(lognormal scale) for both the actual reserves andthe estimatedreserves. TheXAxis showsthe Rank(lognormal scale) of Fields for each line.Onthe basis outlinedabove, the graphassumes that the top40%(ranked)of discoveries provide the ‘best fit’ onwhich toextrapolate the remaining60%ofETR, using the calculationY=M?+C,whereMis the slope of the line andC is the intersect.

Transformations are onlyapplied toshapefile exports. Files requiredfor shapefiles are saved ina compressedfolder. Instead,each layerwithmixeddatums has a .prj file witha datumflagofGCS_Assumed_Geographic_Undefined_Datum andeachcoordinate includes a flag that indicates the datumuponwhich it is basedso that youcanconfigure it usinga third-partyapplic-ation.

Bydefault, spatial data is exportedusing theGeographic Coordinates Systemwith theWGS84datum, unless a specificmapprojection is selectedfor one of the layers includedin the export, inwhichcase thatmapprojectionapplies toall layers in theexport.

Transformations are onlyapplied to layers towhich theGCS_WGS_1984datumhas beenapplied.GCS_WGS_1984is onlyapplied to layerswhere themajorityof items onthat layer are qualifiedandtransformedtoWGS84fromtheir original datum.Transformedlayers shift as anentire layer so individual itemswithinshifted layerswithout a defineddatumshift aswell.

Transformations fromwhichyoucanselect are only those forwhicha valid transformationexists for bothWGS84andthedesiredmapprojectiondatum.

Datumtransformations are savedandexportedalongwith themap.
