Launching Map, Query Editor, and Output windows

Usingthe left pane of the IHSEDINDesktop toolbar, launcheither a newMapwindoworQueryEditor, or opena savedfile. Files savedusing theMapwindow canbe openedusingonly theMapwindow. Files savedusingQueryEditor or anOut-putwindow (Browse,DataCard,Graph, Export ) canbe openedinQueryEditor or inanyOutputwindow.

WhenOpen is selected in the left pane, up to20of themost recentlyaccessedmapor queryfiles appear in the right pane.Push-pinfunctionality ( ) enables youtopinparticular files so that theyremain in the list of recentlyusedfiles insteadofbeingreplacedbymore recentlyaccessedfiles. Youcanalsobrowse for a file whenit does not appear in this list.

WhenlaunchingEDIN, if all of the available licenses are inuse, the user name andmachine name of users currently loggedin toEDIN appears. Youmayinquire whether one of themcanclose their session.

To launchMap,QueryEditor,andOutputwindows

Tolauncha newMapwindoworQueryEditor, using the left pane, clickNew andthen in the right pane clickeitherNewMap orNewQuery .ORfromtheFilemenu, point toNew, and thenclickeitherMap orQuery .

1. Todisplay the results of a queryormappreviouslysaved todisk, using the left pane, clickMap,Query, or one of theOutputwindows (Browse ,DataCard ,Graph , Export ).ORfromtheFilemenu, point toOpen, and thenclickMaporQuery. Youcanalsoopena querypreviouslysaved todiskusinganyOutputwindow (Browse ,DataCard ,Graph , Export ).

2. Either double-click the desiredfile in the RecentFiles pane, or for a file that hasn't beenaccessedrecently, clickMore ,navigate to the file, and thenclickOpen.

Aboutpush-pin functionality

Upto20mapand20queryfiles appear in the RecentFiles pane of the EDINDesktop toolbar. The name of files that areopenedreplace the name of the least recentlyaccessedfiles in the RecentFiles pane. Toensure that the name of a file thatappears in the RecentFiles pane isn't replaced, click the push-pin( ) that appears to the left of a file name.

File nameswithanactive push-pin( ) aren't replacedbynames ofmore recentlyaccessedfiles.

Pinninga file doesn't change the order inwhich it appears in the RecentFiles pane. File names appear in the order inwhichtheywere accessedfrommost to least recent. The RecentFiles pane is updatedwithfiles fromyour current sessionas yousave them.

MapandQueryfiles deletedfromdiskusingWindowsExplorer still appear in the RecentFiles pane until eclipsedbythename of amore recentlyaccessedfile.

Selectwhich toolbars appear invariouswindows andselect toolbar displayproperties. Youcan't customize the IHSEDINDesktop toolbar.Modifiedsettings onlyapply to the specific window fromwhichyoulaunchedthe Customizationdialogbox,andonlyfor the current session.

TheCustomization:Options dialogboxappears.

2. Selectwhether toshow every itemthat appears inamenueach time it's selected; otherwise, onlycommonselections andthose youfrequentlymake appear. ClickingResetmyusage dataerases all yourmenuselectionhistoryso that allmenuitems appear the first time youdisplayeachmenu.

3. Select the size of icons displayed in toolbars, whether todisplayScreenTipswhenyouhover your cursor over toolbaritems, andselect displayeffects formenus suchaswhether theyfade in, and thenclickClose.

NOTE:These settings onlyapply to the specific window fromwhichyoulaunchedtheCustomizationdialogbox, andonlyfor the current session.

Changing default units

The unit systemfor the current sessionappears in the lower-right corner ofmostwindows except theMap.

SwitchbetweenMetric, Imperial, andOilfield in the IHSEDINDesktop toolbar, in theMapwindoworQueryEditor, or inanyOutputwindow. The unit systemchanges throughoutEDIN for the current session.

The current unit systemisn't savedwithmaps or queries saved todisk, sowhenyouopensavedfiles, they're displayed inwhatever unit systemis selectedfor the current session.

Using theMap

About theMapwindow

Use themaptoview your area of interest. Display the layers of interest andnavigate using the zoomandpantools. The

Inspect bar at the bottomof thewindowdisplays informationabout items frominspectable layers. UsingInspectmode ( ),clickan itemonthemaptodisplay itsDataCard.

Select items onthemaptouse inQueryEditor or inOutputwindows. There are severalways toselect items onthemapforoutput toanotherwindow.Results frominspectable layers are retrievedfirst by those youclickedwhile pressingCTRL orSHIFT, next by those youencircledwitha selectionpolygon, andfinallyby thosewithin the currentmapextents.

Making layersvisible

Visible layers are renderedonthemapwhenthemapscale iswithina layer's visibilitycutoffs. Evenif inspectability, whichenables youtoworkwitha layer's objects, is cleared the layer is still renderedonthemap.However, if visibility is cleared,inspectability is alsocleared.

Checkboxes appear at both the individual layer andthe layer grouplevels in the LayerLegend. Enable or disable visibility foran individual layer using that layer's checkbox, or do it for all the layers beneatha grouplayer byselectingor clearing thecheckboxfor that grouplayer.

Followingare the various states of visibility:

At the individual layer level, signifies a layer is visible. At the layer grouplevel, signifies all of the layerswithinalayer groupare visible.At the individual layer level, signifies a layer isn't visible. At the layer grouplevel, signifies all of the layerswithinalayer grouparen't visible.Onlyappears at the layer grouplevel andsignifies that some, but not all of the layerswithina layer groupare visible.

Just because a layer is selected , it doesn'tmeanthat layer is automaticallyvisible on themap. Themapmust alsobezoomedtoa scale atwhich the layer is set toappear. For example, if theWells layer is set toappear at a zoomscale of1:250,000, even thoughits visibilitycheckboxmaybe selected, itwon't appear on themapif your zoomscale is greater than1:250,000.

Items alsowon't be visible on themapunless a symbol, pattern, or fill is definedfor those items. For example, youmayneedtoselect thewell layer in the LayerLegendandthenclickLayer >Symbolize todefine awell headsymbolbeforewellsappear on themap.Youcandetermine how the itemwill be renderedbyviewingthe symbol, pattern, or fill adjacent to thelayer name in the Symbolize columnin the LayerLegend.

Whenyouselect the visibilitycheckbox, a layer alsobecomes inspectable.Whenyouclear the visibilitycheckbox, inspect-ability is alsodisabled.

TIP:Themaprefreshesmore quicklywithfewer layers displayed.

Tochangewhether a layer isvisibleon themap

Doone of the following:

Select the checkboxnext toa layer or a sub-layer name tomake it visible on themap, and thenclickApply.Clear the checkboxnext toa layer or a sub-layer name todisable visibility, and thenclickApply.

NOTE:Youmustmake a layer inspectable inorder toselect its objects or display theminOutputwindows.

Making layers inspectable

Layerswithunderlyingdata canbemade inspectable so that informationabout their objects appears in the Inspect bar belowthemap, so that clickingan itemona layer launches aDataCard, andso that items selected in that layer appear ineither anOutputwindowor inQueryEditor. A layer canonlybemade inspectable whenit'swithin its visible scale cutoffs.

Certainculture layers, suchas prospects, have underlyingdata that canbe inspectedanddisplayed inDataCards, but thatcan't be queried.

Ifmade inspectable, a layer is alsovisible.Wheninspectability is disabled, the layer remains visible so that it's still renderedonthemap.Queryresults canbe attached to themapas a layer andinspected. For details, seeRelated topics below.

Positioning theLayerLegend

Move the LayerLegendas a floating toolbar outside of theMapwindowor dockit on the left, right, top, or bottomof theMapwindow. EDIN remembers yourLayerLegendpreferences betweensessions.

Toposition theLayerLegend

1. Click the LayerLegendtitle bar as depictedbelow anddrag the LayerLegendover theMapwindow.

Placement controls appear alongall four sides inside of theMapwindow andalso in the center of theMapwindowas depictedbelow.

Zoomthemapinor out bya factor (2, 4, 6, etc.), zoomin toa rectangle youdraw, zoomto the extents of themap, zoomtothe previousmapextents, or zoomtoeither the extents of a queryaddedto themap, or to the extents of an individual layerwithin that query.Whena query is initiallyaddedto themap, themapzooms to the extents of that query.Whenthe query isupdatedandits extents change, themapzoomextents change accordingly.

Changingmapprojections

Coordinate reference systems linka coordinate systemwitha datumtoshow the relationshipof the coordinate systemto thesurface andshape of the Earth.

Mapprojections plot features froma three-dimensional sphere ontoa two-dimensionalmap.Mapprojections relyona fixedreference point calleda datumtoperformtheir calculations. There are numerous projections for different geographic areasandat differentmapscales, eachwith their ownunique datum. For example, at largermapscales, EDINdisplaysmaps usingthe plate carree projectionandtheWGS84datum.

AboutDatumTransformations

Transformations are onlyapplied to layers towhich theGCS_WGS_1984datumhas beenapplied.GCS_WGS_1984is onlyapplied to layerswhere themajorityof items onthat layer are qualifiedandtransformedtoWGS84fromtheir original datum.Transformedlayers shift as anentire layer so individual itemswithinshifted layerswithout a defineddatumshift aswell.

Transformations fromwhichyoucanselect are only those forwhicha valid transformationexists for bothWGS84andthedesiredmapprojectiondatum.

Selectingmap items

Select items onthemapbyclicking the individual itemswhile pressingCTRL orSHIFT in Inspectmode ( ), or byencirc-ling themwitha polygon( , , ).

Selected items canbe addedas a uniquemaplayer or passed toeitherQueryEditor or anOutputwindow.Whenpassed toanotherwindow, the pass includes items that are either individuallyselected, surroundedbya polygon, orwithin the visibleextents of the currentmap(in that order of preference). Inorder toappear in thewindow, the layer that contains the selecteditemsmust be set to Inspect ( ) in themapLayerLegend.

Items are sorted in theOutputwindow in the same order inwhichyouCTRL-CLICK them. This order is alsomaintainedwhenyoupass the items fromoneOutputwindow toanother. Eventhoughthe order inwhichyouCTRL-CLICK items ismaintainedas the order inwhich todisplay themwithin their data type, the data types themselves are sortedalphabetically inthe receivingOutputwindows.

Whenat least one itemis selectedbyCTRL orSHIFT-CLICK, the Deselect button( ) in themaptoolbar becomes act-ive. Click it toclear all selected items, or simplyCTRLorSHIFT-CLICK a single selected itemtoclear.

Once you've set your print page options, youcanprint themaptoa plotter or printer. EDIN doesn't support tiledprinting, inwhicha largemapis automatically tiledacrossmultiple pages. If youneed toused tiledprinting, using theMapwindow zoomintoa portionof the overallmapthatwill fill an8.5x11"page andprint it, thenzoominto the next area tofill the next page andprint it, andsoon.

Printing largescalemaps

Printing600DPI requires a lot ofmemory. The followingsteps are recommendedtooptimize printing large scalemaps:Restart your computer.Keepother applications aside fromEDINDesktopclosed, andforEDIN, displayonly theMapwindow that contains themaptoprint. Keepall otherEDINwindows closed.Dependingonyour operatingsystem, increase the allocatedvirtualmemorysize as follows:32-bit - 4096MB64-bit - 8GBReduce the complexityofmaps byclearing transparencyor by turningoff layers youdon't need toprint.

Save a file that defines your currentmapextents,mapscale, selected layers, andcustomizations for use ina future session.Whenyouopenthemapfile, the latest data (subject to the above criteria you've set) is retrievedfromthe database.

Save queries you've attached to themapusing theMapwindowbyselecting the query in the LayerLegend, and thenselect-ingFile >SaveQuery.

Labeling itemsonmaps

Addlabels toallmapitems ona layer using the Label dialogbox, or addthemto individual items that youclickusing theAnnotation>LabelEntities option. Like other annotations,with the Select optionenabled in theAnnotation toolbar item,labels for entities canbe draggedanddeleted, and type settings canbe changed. Tocreate different types of labels for dif-ferent entities, change the label postingoptions in the Label dialogboxbefore clickingeach item.

Using the Label dialogbox, select the font style andcolor of the labels, the scales atwhich theyappear, and their placementposition. If youselect scaled labels, the size of the label changes as youzoomthemap.

Tocreate labels

Resizingmapannotations

The total lengthof lines, and the size of rectangles, circles, polygons andellipses is related tomapscale. The size of these ele-ments on the screenchanges as youzoomthemap. Resize these elements relative to themapbydragginga vertex. Circlescanbe resizedbytypinga radius length in the Properties dialogbox.

AboutQueryEditor

Like theMapwindow,QueryEditor is your startingpointwhenworking inanarea.QueryEditor enables youtoselect datatypes (field, gas plant, pipeline,well, etc.), and thenqueryattributes for those data types.

Multiple data types canbe queriedwitha single queryandall the results displayed inoneMapwindoworOutputWindow.

Queryresults canbe savedas a file that contains both the querycriteria and the IDs ofmatching items, or displayed inanOut-putwindoworMapwindow.

After reviewingormodifying the results inaMaporOutputwindow, youcanpush thembackintoQueryEditor toaddaddi-tional attributes andcriteria withwhich toquery.

Queryresults saved todiskcanbe openedinQueryEditor or inanyOutputwindow, but can't be openedin theMapwindow,whichrequires additional information thatQueryEditor doesn't save.

Buildingqueries

QueryEditor canbe launchedfromnumerouswindows inEDINbypressing .

WhenyoulaunchQueryEditor fromanotherwindow, it's populatedwith the data type andindividual data items selected inthatwindow. For example, if you launchQueryEditor fromaBrowsewindow inwhichyou've selectedseveralwells, theidentifiers for thosewells appear in theQueryEditorCurrentCriteria pane, and thematchingdata type andattributes areselected in theQueryData Type andin theWellAttributes panes.

The attribute list on the left side of theQueryEditorwindowupdates basedonthe data type selectedabove andwhenyouselect anattribute beneath the above querydata type, a descriptionof that attribute appears inblue text at the topofthe attribute usage pane,which is to the right of the attribute pane as depictedbelow.

Viewingquery results

Queryresults are displayed in theMapwindowor inanOutputwindow.Whenyouselect either theMapwindowor anOut-putwindow, your query is runandthe results are automaticallypushedinto theMapwindoworOutputwindow selected.

Pass results betweendifferentMap,QueryEditor, andOutputwindowsmodifying themas yougo. Attach the results of a query toa new, currentlyopen, or savedmapas a separatemaplayer andthenworkwith the queryitems in theMapwindow andthe samemapfunctionalityavailable toothermaplayers. Althoughdefault symbology, scaling,and labelingalreadyconfiguredfor standardmaplayers is applied toquery layers attached to themap, youcanchange thesesettings for the attachedquery layer todifferentiate it fromthe standard layers.

Aprincipal feature of hydrocarbondistribution is that there are usuallya few large fields anda great number of small ones(left-skewedin the jargonof statisticians). The underlyingassumption in thismethodologyis that fields are discovered inorderof decliningsize, i.e. the bigones are foundfirst. The characteristics of these large, earlydiscoveries are extrapolatedfor thesmaller fields thatwill be foundlater in the explorationphase. This canbe developedintoa theory that states that the timingofa field’s discovery is proportional to its size. However, we recognise that this patterndoes nothold true for all explorationscen-arios, e.g. deep-water exploration. Toaccount for this, we have introduceda RankOffset option that allows larger fields tobeincludedin theYTFanalysis. This feature is documentedfully later on in this topic.

In theGraph, eachfield is assigneda rankbaseduponits size, the Fmaxbeingrank1. It has beenobserved that a plot of logreserves size against logof rankapproximates toa straight line. Ina fullyexploitedbasin inwhichall fields have beendis-covered, all fieldswould lie on the same line.However, ina partiallyexploitedone, the absence of small andmediumfieldsresults in the right-handpart of the curve droppingaway.Where it is believed that themajor discoveries have beenmade,these large fields canbe used toestimate the slope of the line andsocreate a synthetic distributionof the EstimatedTotalReserves (ETR), indicatingdiscoveries thatmayyet bemade. The size of these discoveries, the so-calledYet-to-Findfig-ures, canbe foundonthe Reserves SizeDistributionSpreadsheets. These are calculatedbysubtracting the Reserves toDate(RTD) fromETR.

Onlyfields greater than1MMBOEare includedin the statistics.

TheGraphis a line graphcontaining twoseries of data, the actual reserves andthe estimatedreserves. TheYAxis showsthe Reserves Size inMMBOE(lognormal scale) for both the actual reserves andthe estimatedreserves. TheXAxis showsthe Rank(lognormal scale) of Fields for each line.Onthe basis outlinedabove, the graphassumes that the top40%(ranked)of discoveries provide the ‘best fit’ onwhich toextrapolate the remaining60%ofETR, using the calculationY=M?+C,whereMis the slope of the line andC is the intersect.

NetAnalysisofParticipants

Whennet analysis is performedonthis graphic, the fieldsize is nettedout, rather than the number of fields. For example, yourselectedcompanyhas a 50%interest ina fieldwithrecoverable reserves of 600mmboe, locating it in the range 500-1000mmboe. The net of this is then300mmboe,whichmeans that thiswill now appear in the range 250-500mmboe onthe graph.

DifferencebetweenRasterandVector format

BMP(WindowsBitmap) is a raster-basedformat that uses coloreddots to represent an image. BMPformat can't be com-pressedandthe file size tends tobe larger thanother raster-basedformats (.png, .jpg, .gif, .tif, andothers).

EMF(EnhancedMetafile) is a 32-bit vector-basedformat that stores informationasmathematically-basedvectors. EMFimages canbe scaledandthe file format is compressed. EMFformat is extensible so that customfunctionalitycanbe embed-ded in the emf file.
