Which is better, two-stroke or four-stroke? The argument has existed for years with

tales of bank-breaking maintenance costs where thumpers are concerned, and

environmental issues black listing two-smokers from events. Friendships have

been tested and fights have been fought,

but for 2011 Spanish manufacturer Gas Gas have come out with both fists clenched, ready to fight the two-stroke’s corner. P

Husqvarna have gone through a series of tactical and radical changes since they were bought by parent company BMW back in October 2007, and this can be seen in their new 2011 line up. A new BMW powered TE449 replaces the old 450 and the addition of the TE310 (a big-bore version of their stunning TE250) makes their four-stroke range one of the most comprehensive for the approaching season. The Enduro World Championship has seen the first two world championship titles claimed by Manxman David Knight and Spaniard Lorenzo Santolino in spectacular fashion at the penultimate event of the year, the Turkish GP. The E1 and E2 categories are yet to be decided but Mika Ahola has a firm grip on the middle class title whilst Antoine Meo has watched his points advantage disappear overnight and must now fight to the bitter end. Here’s a question that is being asked more and more in recent times: ‘What’s the solution if you want the power of a big-bore machine with the handling and nimbleness of a small capacity machine?’ or maybe it should be ‘What do you do if you want to ride a 250cc four-stroke in the E2 class (290cc – 450cc)?’ Well the answer is you build a one-off tailored 305cc pedigree racing machine, a real ‘Special Brew’! Top British enduro rider Greg ‘Special’ Evans needs no introduction and neither does his team manager / mechanic Julian ‘Smooth’ Stevens, who has hand crafted this custom racer! After the fifth round of the ACU British Enduro Championship at Dyfi in Wales, Enduro Extreme were lucky enough to test this rare creature and see how a standard EXC-F 250 could be transformed into the ultimate racing machine. For the second consecutive year Daryl Bolter has won the Welsh Two Day Enduro held in Llandrindod Wells, Mid Wales, but he was made to work for his victory as the Fast Eddy Racing Team of Paul & Lee Edmondson and Tom Sagar pushed him to the bitter end while it was Jonathan Evans, Mike Bailey and Daniel McCanney who all won their respective subclasses in the Expert class.

Words and pictures: Stuart Taylor

The Welsh Two Day is just one of those events which has to be ridden to be fully appreciated, and this year’s entry was a mixture of old and new faces. There was a distinct lack of top-end talent at this year’s event; Welsh favourite Greg Evans was busy abroad claiming a win at a round of the European Championship, Simon Wakely’s recent retirement meant he wasn’t in attendance, ongoing problems with British immigration and injury meant the TM squad of Josh Green and Phil McLaughlin were absent, and the MPS Racing team had decided to take a well deserved rest in between their commitments at the British and World Enduro Championships. The first of the sidecars was flagged away at 08.01, Jack Penfound and Simon Rogers at the helm. With an entry of over six hundred riders spectators had plenty to watch although the Welsh Two Day is a traditional time card enduro and consists of only one mammoth lap per day, so getting in the right position to watch is important. From the very first test at Crossgates Daryl Bolter made his intentions clear onboard his KTM and set a time two seconds faster than his closest rival Tom Sagar. Daryl would be looking to repeat his performance from 2009 when he dominated the event from start to finish and was further aided by good weather conditions. By the end of the first day Bolter and second placed Tom Sagar had a fifteen second advantage over the following pack of Edward Jones and the Edmondson brothers, Lee and Paul. Ex-British Enduro and Super-moto Champion Ady Smith had decided to dust off his boots and ride the Welsh again for 2010, something which he hadn’t done in ten years, and to many people’s surprise he went on to finish ninth in the championship class. With the dust settled after the first day’s competition the riders retired battered and bruised; the Welsh Two Day is one of the most demanding events on the calendar and often claims a number of casualties. With the weather shaping up nicely Sagar set out to take the lead from Bolter but with only two tests on the second day it was a big ask. Although Sagar fired his Suzuki round both tests marginally quicker than Bolter it still wasn’t enough and for the second consecutive year Daryl Bolter had won the Welsh Two Day Enduro. Second place went to Sagar, with Welshman Edward Jones taking third spot from Paul Edmondson towards the end of the second day. Gas Gas’s Ashley Wood finished fifth with Suzuki’s Lee Edmondson only a split-second behind in sixth place. P
