    Atmosphere Composition (%)Applications

SECO/WARWICK endothermic atmosphere generatorsare used with heat treating furnaces of suitable design forthe protection of surfaces being treated or as a carrier forcarburizing.

A rich endothermic atmosphere is produced by operatingat the richer air-gas ratios and is used for the followingprocesses:

Bright hardening of high carbon and alloy carbonsteels, without oxidation or decarburization. Com-pletely reacted endothermic atmosphere is non-decarburizing to high carbon steels because it con-tains no carbon dioxide and little water vapor. It isparticularly applicable to hardening where decarburi-zation cannot be tolerated.

Bright hardening of high-speed steels of both the high

molybdenum and high tungsten types. Sintering of high carbon and alloy powdered com-

    pacts.

Brazing of ferrous metals, particularly those containinghigh carbon and requiring brazing without decarburi-zation.

Used as a carrier gas in gas carburizing applications.

A lean endothermic atmosphere is produced by operatingat the leaner air-gas ratios and is used for the followingprocesses:

Hardening of medium carbon steels, without decar-

burization. Sintering and powder metallurgy processes on low

and medium carbon metals and nonferrous metalswhere long heating and cooling cycles and an atmos-phere with reducing properties greater than that of arich exothermic atmosphere are required. The roomtemperature dew points help prevent possible gas re-actions which cause carbon deposition on slow cool-ingparticularly in the range of 1000F (538C) to1200F (649C).

Furnace brazing of ferrous metals (except stainlesssteel) because of its high reducing properties.

    Process and Gas Cost

An endothermic atmosphere is produced at a low costfrom any regular fuel gas such as natural gas, propane, and butane. Call SECO/WARWICK for a production costestimate using your current utility prices.

After air has been filtered, it is automatically mixed withgas to give a predetermined air-gas ratio which is thenindicated by visual flowmeters. Air and gas are mixedin a mixing pump which also compresses the mixtureand moves it through a piping system to a heated,

catalyst-filled chamber where the reaction takes placeproducing the endothermic atmosphere. As the gasleaves the catalyst-filled chamber, it is quicklyquenched in a forced-air cooler.

    Construction Features:

Mixing PumpConstructed to give quiet operation and enduring service. It is equipped with a bypass regulatorwhich maintains constant pressure at any output.

Flowmeters Flowmeters are mounted on the front of the panel to indicate the gas and air input to the generatorin cubic feet per hour.

Gas CoolerA forced air gas cooler is used to cool the newly formed atmosphere, eliminating costly water con-sumption.

Heating EquipmentThe reaction chamber is heated by a pressure type burner that uses a pilot equipped witha flame supervision.
