    1 A student is investigating the rate of cooling of hot water.

    ( a ) He pours hot water into a beaker until it is about two-thirds full. He measures and records the temperature

    , o C of the hot water and at the same time starts a stopwatch.

    As the water cools, he records the temperature every 30 s for a total of five minutes. The sections of thethermometer showing the readings are shown below :

    (e

    )

    The rate of cooling of the hot water at any time depends on the difference between the temperature of the

    water at that time and room temperature.

    ( i ) State whether your graphsupports this statement and explain your answer ( 3 m )

    ......................................................................................................................................................................

    ( ii ) Suggest three variables that you would try to keep constant if this statement were to be

    investigated further. ( 3 m )

    .

    ( e ) Suggest one addition you could make to the apparatus provided in order to reduce the rate of

    evaporation of the water in the beaker. ( 1 m )

    2 Another student is investigating the refraction of light through

    a transparent block of glass.

    The figure shows the apparatus used.

    ( a ) She looks down through the transparent

    block at the image of a line drawn on the

    sheet of paper. She carefully places the point

    of an optical pin exactly in line with the image.

    On the figure

    ( i ) measure the vertical distance x

    between the paper and the pin. ( 1 m )

    x = .....................................................

    ( ii ) measure the height hof the transparent block. ( 1 m )

    h = .....................................................

    ( b ) Calculate the refractive indexnof the material

    of the block using the equation ( 2 m )

    Masa yang dicadangkan untuk menjawab bahagian ini ialah 30 minit

    3 Insulation can slow down heat loss

    Referring to the statement above,

    ( a ) make a suitable inference ( 1 m )

    (b ) state a suitable hypothesis that can be investigated ( 1 m )

    ( c ) outline an experiment to investigate this hypothesis using two copper cans, a piece of

    synthetic fleece ( polyester ) material and other pieces of apparatus commonly found in a school

    laboratory. Your description should include the following

    i aim of experiment

    ii the variables involved in the experiment

    iii a list of the apparatus, and materials used

    iv the arrangement of the apparatus

    v procedure of the experiment including the method of controlling the manipulated variable and of

    measuring the responding variable

    vi how you would tabulate the data

    vii how you would analyse the data ( 12 m )
