POLICE DEPARTMENT NEWS
HELLO ALL!!!
I hope everyone’s summer has started off well. I’m looking
forward to a nice summer myself.
I wanted to take this opportunity to let everyone know we here
at the Police Department have been receiving an unusual
increase for calls of service. There are a number of
contributing factors leading to the increased call volume. The
calls have varied in type and levels of concern. I would like to
ask the citizens of Mt Zion to be watchful for unfamiliar
vehicles riding through our neighborhoods or unfamiliar
people walking through our neighborhoods. If you see
anything that you feel does not belong, to please call 911 for an
officer to respond and check things out.
Also, it’s the vacation time of year again. Here are some
suggestions before you leave out for your vacations and trips.
You should let family or a friend know your itinerary to
include where you plan to be and contact numbers should the
need arise for emergency contact. I would like to remind you
that the Mt Zion Police Department still conducts residence
checks upon request. So, I urge you to take advantage of this
opportunity when you make your plans to go on your trip.
Simply contact the Police Department and provide the needed
details and your residence will be added to the Security Check
list. We will gladly help keep an eye on things.
One last thing, I want to say thank you to all those that have
expressed your support of the Police Department and its
officers. It’s always refreshing when officers receive that show
of support.
As always, be safe and have fun!!!

MOUNT ZION SENIOR CENTER
Hello, from the center everyone! It has been so good to
see people in person again. I hope everyone is having a
great summer so far. July will definitely be filled with
many great activities for us to enjoy. We are looking
forward to lots of yummy lunches and snacks. If you are
apprehensive about eating here with us, remember we
do have to go plates as an option for those who are still
feeling anxious about the virus germs.
Our programs after lunch will be through the Library for
the next few weeks as we enjoy participating in our
yearly summer reading programs.
We look forward to seeing all of you, through the long,
hot, dog days of summer. Join us and share in all of the
fun activities and fellowship here at our Center. We will
have hand sanitizing stations available. We also ask if
you’re feeling sick or have a fever please stay home
until you have been fever free for 24 hours without
medicine. Staying safe and healthy are concerns for
everyone, so we appreciate everything each person
does to help out along the way. As the old adage goes,
an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
For a complete and detailed list of all our upcoming
programs, check out our monthly calendar, found at the
center, or here in the bulletin, with lunch menu and
more.
I would love to encourage new visitors to come check us
out. It is a fun and friendly atmosphere. So, with an
effort to grow our center, and be able to make available
even more activities; the center is offering coupons, for
new visitors. Be sure to look for them printed in the
bulletins, and bring them with you to try a lunch at the
center, or get one free bingo card for play during one
whole session. Give it a try, you may meet some new
friends, or re-connect with some old ones!

GREETINGS FROM CITY HALL
I trust everyone is doing fine. A lot to talk about, most of it good. The City Council has
passed a resolution to fill the Council seat vacated by Kevin Lepard. Kevin was elected
to a four year term last November, but has moved outside the city. Kevin was granted
a leave of absence from his post in the hopes he could reestablish is city residency. He
has been unable to do so. Kevin’s seat will be filled in the November general election.
A Mt. Zion Councilman serves at-large, which means everyone in the City can vote for
his replacement. The election will be for the unexpired three years of his term. Our city attorney is making
the necessary arrangements to have this vote included on the November ballot. More information on
qualifying will be forth coming. Kevin served on the Council for four years and will be sincerely missed. His
knowledge of city operations, experience and insight into the needs of the city going into the future, and
unconditional love for the city, made him an invaluable asset on the Council. Kevin thank you for your
service.
All the planning and figuring has been completed and everything is in place to begin construction of our
phase 2 water improvements. This will involve new pipe, fire hydrants, and booster pumps for the Old
Jacksonville Road, Harrison Road area of the City. This project is nowhere near as large as phase one
completed last year. The contract has been awarded to Corley Contractors DBA C&L of Dallas Ga. The start
date is July 13 and should take only three or four months. I have already started the ball rolling for a phase
3, hopefully in 2021 with another CDBG grant. My goal is to supply water to the northern end of Bremen
Mt. Zion Rd and Lee Williams Rd. The only water available in this area is private well because the elevation
is beyond the City’s capabilities. This will be a difficult undertaking involving a lot of planning,
engineering, and politics just to begin the process. The investment return to the city will be tremendous.
City water service to this area will allow us to influence and even control this future growth corridor. More
about this in future editions of the Bulletin.
The city has reopened the Community Center for weekly bingo on Tuesdays and Thursdays with lunch on
Wednesdays. Since closing in March, the Center has undergone a thorough cleaning and disinfecting to
include chairs and carpet. The Center is safe and ready. The Library has also returned to normal operation.
Vicki put together a summer reading program involving parking lot pickup of reading assignments and
treats. The turnout was far above expectations and surpassed last year’s participation.
Every three years, the city turns its attention to the collection of unpaid property taxes owed the City. The
city has mailed the necessary requests for payment and for those select few that still have not made an
attempt to catch up their tax bill or contact the city requesting special consideration, the necessary filing is
being put in place for a public sale of the property. A future edition of the Bulletin will list the properties
with a sale date. I will not allow a few individuals to take a free ride on city services at everyone else’s
expense.
It is not very often that I get to say “thank you” to a private company that has gone out on a limb to do
something special for the Mt. Zion community. Comcast, a cable provider in this part of the state, is that
rare exception. Comcast will be installing high speed fiber optic cable in the city and community of Mt.
Zion over the next year. This installation will not only give a cable TV option other than satellite dish, it will
also provide high speed internet service. A dream come true. This has not been an easy business decision
for Comcast. Again, “Thank You” Comcast for publicly taking the position that small communities like Mt.
Zion are important.
