2018 is a year of encounters with the forces of destiny and the power of desire; forces and powers that weave tangled webs of existential dilemmas through which we explore the extremes of human experience, as only opera can. When the pain is too great to express in words, music provides the expressive release and the means to elevate our suffering to nobility, and explore transcendental truth.

The legends of heroic self-sacrifice, struggle and liberation, and the conflicts between personal need and public duty animate Rossini’s masterpiece William Tell.

Pelleas and Melisande explores desire and destiny in an enchanted sound world and landscape. The Capulets and the Montagues gives us Bellini’s version of the Romeo and Juliet story – doomed love realised through sublime melody.

Two Australian works, Calvin Bowman’s little charmer The Magic Pudding - The Opera and Julian Langdon, Casey Bennetto and Gillian Cosgriff’s hypnotic Lorelei, relieve the darker tones of the major works by seeing the possibilities of parody and humour in their fateful encounters.

Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel also makes a welcome return as our youngest audiences encounter opera and the Wicked Witch for the first time.

An extraordinary line-up of international and Australian singers join our brilliant creative teams in new productions. Our developing partnerships with Arts Centre Melbourne, the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM), Orchestra Victoria, Palais Theatre, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and the University of Melbourne are a source of great pride and help us to reimagine the potential of opera, for everyone.

How to subscribe

4/ Submit your subscription by post, online, by phone or in person.

Payments You can pay by cheque (payable to Arts Centre Melbourne) or credit card (Mastercard, VISA, AMEX).

Subscription processing fee All subscriptions submitted via mail, phone or online will attract an $8.50 subscription processing fee per transaction. Submit all orders for yourself and your co-subscribers together and only pay one fee.

If you are purchasing a subscription for more than one person, there are two options:

Paying together Include the contact details for each person while booking using the form, online or over the phone. There is space for up to four subscribers. Include relevant Concession or Seniors Card numbers or date of birth. Choose the Opt-in for each subscriber if they would like to receive communications from us. Due to Privacy legislation, the confirmation of booking will only be sent to the Primary Subscriber listed on the booking form.

Paying separately Complete separate subscriptions and submit them together. Alternatively, indicate the subscribers you wish to be seated with, on your form (please ask the other subscribers to do the same). If booking online or over the phone, be sure to mention your wish to be seated with other subscribers in your party.

RP RELAXED PERFORMANCE

Hansel and Gretel 12 June, 1pm

A relaxed performance provides a calm environment for audiences with elements of the production adapted to reduce anxiety or stress. This environment is ideal for audience members with autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome and those sensitive to sensory variance. Lighting and sound levels are adjusted to soften their impact; making noise and moving around the auditorium is welcome during the performance; and there are designated ‘chill-out’ areas in the foyer.

AUDIO DESCRIPTION AND TACTILE TOURS

The Magic Pudding – The Opera 17 March, 1pm and 5pm Hansel and Gretel 9 June, 11am and 2pm William Tell 19 July, 7:30pm Pelleas and Melisande 13 October, 7:30pm

Audio description narrates the action on stage for audience members who are blind or visually impaired. Audio Described performances will have an accompanying Tactile Tour 45 minutes prior to the start time of the performance. Tactile Tours allow people with vision impairment to explore the props and costumes of the production. Victorian Opera provides Audio Description and Tactile Tours for selected performances. When organising your tickets, please speak to the box office to book your Audio Description receiver and/or Tactile Tour.

Wheelchair and mobility access

Victorian Opera presents in venues that provide access and seating for wheelchairs and mobility aids. Please let the box office know of your requirements when booking.
