Essay byStevanus Rionaldo

One of poetic thing that can happen in a social interaction is when we have a chance encounter with someone we know. At that moment, we find a familiar face among strangers in the crowd. When that happens, it occurs as if we come out from alienating condition to a familiar one. And then, what happen after that? It depends on the circumstances. This chance encounter can continue to a deeper conversation or a mere greet exchange and each one return to their business.

This exhibition features six young artists: Bonggal Hutagalung, Fauziana, Muhammad Vilhamy, Rega Ayundya Putri, Sarita Ibnoe, dan Siddharta Kandahdjaja. Each artist embraces strategies that provide a certain condition so that the audiences encounter something outside him/herself. That thing could be something familiar, strange, or maybe both.

Through his works, Bonggal Hutagalung proposes his unique vision about how a work of art should be. Unlike common expectation about pottery, his works do not have smooth surface. Instead, we will find wavy surface on them caused by his decision to employ finger pinching technique to build his works. He intentionally left the rough feel but somewhat fun in his works and it correlates strongly with his conceptual framework. He likes to play with visual puns and he incorporates them in his body of work. Bonggal also put some found objects as additional element, unexpectedly, such as Monosodium Glutamate in the work titled That Thing.

Similar to Bonggal who uses ceramic as the medium, Fauziana also use ceramic as her main medium. At a glance, especially from a distance, her work looks like a shelf that we usually see in a woodworker’s workshop. However, if we inspect it closer, the tools contained in that shelf are made from clay. The work titled Lain Dulu, Lain Sekarang (or roughly translated as The Difference between Then and Now) consists of various obcjects that resemble tools like handsaw, screwdriver, clamp, drill, etc., all are in white. The objects are created by pouring semi-liquid clay dough into a cast (of the object) and heating it inside a kiln to harden it. The fragile objects contrasted to a dark brown wooden shelf are echoing the irony of the work itself.

Taking inspiration from his childhood memories, Muhammad Vilhamy presents sixteen series of etchings titled Tekanan Batinku or translated as My Inner Burden. It consists of 16 frames stacked in diamond shape. Each frame consist an etching print of words or images that are taken from his childhood, such as lullaby lyrics or naive child drawing. There are similar

features that link one work and another in this series, which is a naked brick wall image as background for all of them. He challenges his own childhood memories as something restrictive but necessary to define his identity.

In her work, Rega Ayundya Putri presents abstract forms that slightly resemble human figures in absurd gestures. It consists of ten frames, each has 30 x 30 cm for its dimension. Rega uses colorful wax clay to build every figure on a flat glass surface and put another layer of glass on top of it. Then, she adds some drawings using white and black marker on the outer side of the glass. She titles the work Daydream Believer, and it intrinsically connects to how she comes up with the image. She has some sketchbooks that collect her drawings made whenever she feels angry, sad, happy, or any other mixtures of emotion that occur in her life events and she takes the drawings as reference. Therefore, her work is an attempt to understand the emotional life event itself, how it affect her feelings and how she able to overcome the feeling.

Sarita Ibnoe’s installation is her way to connect her past, present and future. This work titled Teruntuk Pasangan Ibnoe or translated as Dearest Ibnoe Couple consists of drawings, photography, and a couple of old chairs. The drawings are arranged in such way that resembles photography arrangement we found in living room inside a house. The two old chairs face the drawing arrangement and audiences are invited to sit there to contemplate how we see human life as something fragile we need a set of artifact to remind ourselves about our past and future.

Siddharta Kandahdjaja has a mission to build his own world based on his imagination. By employing screen print technique on canvas, he composes multiple colorful hexagonal forms that resemble a network of single cell creatures. Ultimus Regisolium, the title of the work, is an early phase of his journey to build his own world.

So, what will we do after this chance encounter?
