NZ SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA TUSCAN SUMMER Tuscan Summer will bring Taranaki audiences the chance to experience famous works by Rossini, Mendelssohn and Britten. International guest conductor Junichi Hirokami will lead the orchestra as it performs music that celebrates the sumptousness of Italy. Mendelssohn’s Symphony No.4, the Italian, was composed to evoke the supreme delight in life and Rossini’s Barber of Seville Overture is a perfect example of Italian music – sunny and light and then roaring with energy. American violinist Stefan Jackiw – described by the Washington Post as a ‘talent that’s off the scale’ – will sweep you away with the lyrical score of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto. Britten’s Soirees Musicales completes the programme. The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra is one of the world’s oldest national symphony orchestras and has been delighting audiences with memorable concerts and recordings for 67 years. Brooke was last in New Plymouth in 2011 following her breakthrough worldwide hit Something In The Water. Brutal Romantic sees Brooke venturing to new musical territory with electronic flavoured, sonically daring tracks wrapped around her trademark beautiful vocals and pop melodies. Attending a WIUO concert is like catching your favourite wave at the Kumara Patch, it’s like getting up at 5am to get to the milking shed and watching the sunrise over the misty paddocks, it’s like the time when rhododendrons bloom or the first spring lambs are born – it will warm the cockles of your heart and make you laugh with joy. Tell us about the bands musical influences? The musical influences of the WIUO are as many and varied as it’s members. It is like a box of chocolates – each member has a flavour and they bring that to the band. The common thread is that the songs we select are very sing-along-able, and frequently dance-along-able. The WIUO love to keep it kiwi too – celebrating our homegrown songs! Which famous musicians do you admire? Why? One of my favorite artists is Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings – New York old school soul. I was introduced to this band at WOMAD and was blown away by the bands commitment to the groove, musical discipline and relaxed stylishness. I was absolutely blown away by Sharon’s performance – the two times I have seen her I have been compelled and lucky enough to dance with her on stage! What are your fondest musical memories? Every year we have two family events – our family camp at Whangamomona and Pa Week at our marae in Oakura. In both instances singing and performing are a huge part of these events. In one instance keeping the campfire sing along in tune – the uncles and aunties know all the words but not all the tunes! In the other keeping up with my talented cousins to perform at the Pa Week concert after the 20-aside one-day cricket game. Are you looking forward to performing in New Plymouth? Yes! The orchestra has been up to Taranaki several times now, to play at the spectacular WOMAD, at the Taranaki Arts Festival and in Eltham to celebrate the reopening of their town hall. I am a born and bred Stratford lass, schooled in New Plymouth, so yes, everytime and always it is a proud moment to have my band play in your home province! I am so looking forward to coming home on this tour. What’s your favorite song that we can expect to hear? My new favorite song is “Wake Up” by the talented and beautiful Aaradna. I sing this song on the new album and relate to its story. I sing it to myself constantly – it reminds and inspires me to get going with my days! Can you give us a sneak preview of some of the music/bands you cover? 5 MINUTES WITH MARIA VESHKINA, KOSTROMA’S TOUR PRODUCER... What is Kostroma? What kind of dance?Kostroma is the name of the ancient provincial city of Russia that used be the capitol of Russia in XIII century. Russian National Dance Show Kostroma is a show based on the folk dance but stylized by our artistic director. It is not just about the dance, it is also about drama, new technologies, light and props to make the show spectacular for the audience.

What music accompanies this dance? It is accompanied by the music recorded with the biggest folk orchestras in Russia. The music was composed specifically for the show by the well-known Russian composer Vladimir Kornev who composed the music for the Olympic Games in Moscow in 1980.

How many people are involved in the show? 45 dancers and 10 crew are touring Australia and New Zealand on this tour.

The costumes look beautiful – how many different costumes are there?More than 600 handmade costumes (embroidery, appliqué work, decorative stones, beads etc). All the costumes are created by our costume designer Elena Piotrovskaya in cooperation with our producer and artistic director.

Please teach us some Russian! How do you say Encore?! Beautiful!NA BIS! KRASIVIYI!

What do you look forward to about visiting and performing for New Zealand audiences? We have not been in NZ before but it is exciting to bring Russian culture to a country thousands of miles away from Russia, the country that a lot of people have heard of but a few have been lucky to visit.

What is the biggest challenge (or a funny story) that you have faced on this tour so far?So far we have worked in a few theatres that had good stages but no backstage area at all which makes it very complicated for us to unpack 5 tons of freight and fit in huge props in the backstage area. All 45 dancers change backstage often they need to be changed in 1-3 minutes, so we had to unpack everything in the streets under the palms. We were lucky to have good weather!

ELVIS TCB BAND & JOHN ROWLES IN CONCERTFor the first time ever, the original Elvis TCB Band joins with New Zealand music icon John Rowles for a New Zealand tour celebrating their greatest songs and more. Featuring some of the most famous Elvis and John Rowles songs including Love Me Tender, Heartbreak Hotel, Suspicious Minds, If I Only Had Time and Cheryl Moana Maree, as well as all-time classics from the era - don’t miss these living legends playing the music that shaped a generation!
