Birthday DANCE Celebration
“Dance Your Way to Health” with the music of Juan Ortega . Be sure to mark your calendar to join us at Encore Wednesday 10/17/2018 1:30PM
Dance not only instills grace, but it also helps
you age gracefully. According to a study in The
New England Journal of Medicine, dancing may
boost your memory and prevent you from de-
veloping dementia as you get older. Science
reveals that aerobic exercise can reverse vol-
ume loss in the hippocampus, the part of the
brain that controls memory. The hippocampus
naturally shrinks during late adulthood, which
often leads to impaired memory and some-
times dementia.

Encore Class Highlight: SAIL
SAIL Fall Prevention Exercise: a strength, balance and fit-ness program for adults 65 and older, led by certified SAIL instructor Jean Fung. (For Registered Participants Only; please see Marilou or contact [email protected])
Classes start on October 16, 2018 and will be held for a period of
weeks every Tuesday and Thursday. According to National Council on
Aging (NCOA) the program was first implemented in community
settings in 2006 and Encore is proud to offer this evidence based
course to members again this year. Stay Active and Independent for Life
(SAIL) is a strength, balance and fitness program for adults 65 and older.
Performing exercises that improve strength, balance and fitness are the
single most important activity that adults can do to stay active and re-
duce their chance of falling. The entire curriculum of activities in the
SAIL program can help improve strength and balance, if done regularly.
SAIL is offered 2 times a week in a one hour class. SAIL exercises can be
done standing or sitting. An evaluation of the SAIL program was pub-
lished in the Journal of Gerontology: Medical Science 2007. The research
found that a community based multifaceted intervention was effective
in improving balance, mobility and leg strength, all known risk factors
for falls. In 2010, a Transitional Research Evaluation of SAIL published in
the 2010 Society for Public Health Education found that 93% of respond-
ents reported improved performance of daily activities; 92% reported
improved strength, balance, fitness or flexibility; and 80% found the SAIL
information guide education component helpful. Encore will be tracking
the progress of participates and hopes to replicate past successes with
the Sail class.
A Note from Jose Luis
Very excited to welcome the holiday season with the fabu-lous Encore team. We are so excited about the coming hol-idays, the changes in menu and programming that we do not want to startle anyone with them; we remain assidu-ous to our mission & to Encore members recognizing that our work steams from our hearts to yours.
It is important to highlight that the change in seasons not only signals the coming holidays, but also more inclement weather. Our team, especially those in our kitchen services and home delivered meal teams are vigilant in ensuring nu-trition to those members at-risk and stand ready to provide not only a smile but also emergency meals when needed.
