ENBE | Final Project | Part A - Report | The Better Livable Town Representation

In this final project, we will be focusing on the component of the town and the build environment. Supposing ourselves as a mayor of “X” town, we are to propose a new layout for the new town, as a result of over population.

This project is divided into two parts, part A and part B. For part A, we have to do some research about town, what makes a good town. We also have to investigate and examine the ancient city and town also the present city and town and learn from the research to come out with a good idea to propose the new town.

We have to create a new name for the town and design the future town considering the geometric shape, form, pattern, hierarchy, system and structure of the town. Include also the zoning of the town, transportation, infrastructure and other services. In Part 2, we have to present the selected town model and the A2 presentation board.

2.1 The town definition.

A town is a built-up area with a name, defined boundaries, and local government, that is larger than a village and generally smaller than a city.

2.2 What is the brief history.

Through the history, a town was formed during neolithic time when the development of agriculture technique is enough to support permanent population. It also undergoes the development of communication and transportation as it is a place of trade for the benefits of people who lives in the area.

2.3 What makes a town.

A town should be a place that comfortable for people to live and can attract other to visit. A town should be create with a good landscape with an aesthetic view. Besides, a basic town should have the following aspects:

2.4 What makes a good town/township

As state mention in 2.3, those aspects are needed to makes a town. But, what do we need to makes a good town ? To makes a good town should include the following:

- Unpolluted environment and has aesthetic view. People

are recommended to use public transport or car Pool. Good environment helps to attract many foreign to came to our town. - Great street. Balances the competing needs of the street (driving, walking, transit, drop-off, etc.). Provide safety for the street users. - Has good learning environment and high quality of the education system. Produce a high quality worker for the future. - Provide free health care for the poor people. Emphasis on preventive care and health maintenance. - Maintaining the peace and safety of the town. Prepare the emergencies possible such as earthquake, fire, climate change or food and fuel shortage.

2.5 What is a future town.

What does it mean by future town? Future town is a town that livable and sustainable. Future town is for living locally to create strong, resilient and healthy local Communities. To make it happen, all aspects that mention above are the conditions to make a future town that have been dreaming by many people.

For example Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage, Missouri. It is a developing 280-acre community in

northeastern Missouri with far-reaching goals. It aims to be an entirely self-reliant town that practices "radical environmental sustainability,"

They use alternative andrenewable energy such as solar energy and wind energy, they build straw bale homes, practice organic gardening, eat bio-regionally, make decision by

3.1 When did it start?

Mohenjo-daro was discovered in 1922 by R.D Banerji, an officer of the Archaeological Survey of India, two year after major excavations had begun at Harappa, some 590 km to the north. Large-scale excavations were carried out at the site under the direction of John Marshall, K. N. Dikshit, Ernest Mackay, and numerous other directors through the 1930s.

Mohenjo-daro was a city located in the south of Modern Pakistan in the Sindh Province, on the right bank of the Indus River. It was built between four or five thousand years ago, and last until 3700 BP. It was part of the Harappa Civilization and at its peak, the city has at least 35000 residents.

3.2 What ancient city are you concentrating on? An ancient Indus Valley Metropolis.

3.3 What make it significant city and what are the details?

Mohenjo-Daro is a well-planned street grid and an elaborate drainage system hint that the occupants of the ancient Indus

civilization city of Mohenjo Daro were skilled urban planners with a reverence for the control of water. They often had two stories, a cistern or well to hold water, and clay pipes to deliver water to different rooms in the house. A central patio or open-air courtyard provided a method of ventilation for the structure. Sewage from the houses of Mohenjo-Daro flowed into a sewer line that followed down the street grid. The houses of Mohenjo-Daro were built on a street grid like neighborhoods in modern cities. Many of the streets were covered with mud brick and has enough space for an ox-cart to drive down the middle. It is possible that the people of Mohenjo-Daro had shops on the lower levels of their houses, or they may have set up shop in front of their homes each day.

They also has granary, a structure for the storage and preservation of grain, and the people of Mohenjo-Daro had a big one. The people of Mohenjo-Daro may have used their granary as a community bank for their harvested grains, much as we use banks today.

3.4 Conclusion of the city

Mohendo-daro is a good example of town planning. It has a planned layout based on a grid street, which were laid out in perfect patterns. It also has a good drainage system.

4.1 When did it start? Hydropolis Underwater Hotel was officially open on 2009. The developer and the designer of the hotel is Joachim Hauser, a German architect. This hotel will be the first luxury underwater hotel in the world. This hotel consist of three elements; the land station, connecting tunnel and 220 suites within the submarine leisure complex. This project covering an area of 260 hectares as it is the largest construction project in the world. The land on which Hydropolis has being built belongs To His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai. It was his last free beach property on this stretch of coast.

the detail?

Hydropolis project would be the one of most high-tech hotels. All the guests will gather at land station before transport by train to main area of the hotel. Besides, each room would be equipped with an adjustable control panel to change the lighting, shapes, sounds and even smells. The transparent dome above the water surface at night will highlight the huge colored spotlights and at daytime an artificial cloud generated by a special mechanism will protect guests from the scorching rays of the Hydropolis sun. Next the security system, the underwater part is divided into sections, which in case of fire or flooding sealed bulkheads overlap. In case of terrorist attacks the whole complex will be equipped with missile defense. This includes double-layered construction as appropriate as well as redundant technical Systems; pumps, power supply.

modern transportation that will not pollute the air in the hotel’s surrounding.

4.5 What information or element that you can use to your new town?

My future city will include a high-tech security system. My town also will be a carbon free as there will be no car in the town but only provided bicycle and Eco-friendly public transport.

Phil Pauley, London-based designer has been working for the past two decades to design and develop a full city with the underwater city concept.

Sub Biosphere 2 is basically a string of a structure that are self-sustainable. This project will provide a shelter for 100 people. Pauley’s unique underwater habitat is designed to sustain all of its life support systems such as air, water, food, electricity, and other resources through an “innovative control of variant atmospheric pressures that occur at depth.”Eight living bio mes surround a larger central bio me that contains all of the control equipment, while the smaller bio mes contain spaces where people live, grow food and more. This bio mes recreate the Earth’s biosphere which consist the region of the land, water and air that hold life, know as lithosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere respectively.

5.0 Case study on future town.

To live underwater, many aspect should be reconsider first. Such as, :

ENBE | Final Project | Part A - Report | The Better Livable Town Representation

- It has great water pressure - Transportation - Food - Oxygen and water supply

The following aspect should be solved first before an underwater town is make.

a) Water pressure People cannot live in the water because of a great water pressure. Normal cement and glass can be easily broke if it is apply to the town. To solve this problem, the town should be making with multiple modules made of glass, steel and special cement. We could not build a town more than 1000ft depth because we will need thicker wall as the deeper, the greater the pressure is.

b) Transportation Living underwater meaning we will leaving in enclosed place. So, transportation that give off carbon monoxide cannot be use in the town. Eco-friendly transportation, bicycle are allow in the town. The residents are encourage to walk as the size of town is small. This method can helps to prevent air pollution in underwater town.

c) Food

Fresh seafood is easy to get at the bottom of the sea. Cooking underwater will be a problem because of the smell that give off. So, every kitchen should be provide with the air control panel that can distinguish the smell.

d) Oxygen and water supply.

ENBE | Final Project | Part A - Report | The Better Livable Town Representation

To become self-suntanning, plant and grow plants using natural or artificial light to generate a fresh oxygen supply or generate other methods to produce their own oxygen. The other way is by using water-air separator machine. It is a machine that separate the oxygen that contain in the seawater. Water is easy to get as we live underwater. But get a clean water, the seawater should be undergo the purification process and lastly become a clean water. The steps to get clean water is suction, purification and transfer.

6.1 How did you come up with the solution to

create this new town?

With the over population and rapidly decreasing available land space, innovative ideas are needed for exploring where and how we will live in the future. As a mayor of the town, i must create a new town for my citizens to live in the future. After the serious investigation, my teammates had decided to create a new underwater town. We choose underwater because we will have enough space to build a new town My new town will be located at Pulau Perhentian as it has a clean sea water and one of the hot spot for holiday.

6.2 What is the important characteristic and element?

The Parasea will be located at 20 m under water. The construction will have a concrete and steel structure also plexiglas walls and the ceiling will allow residents to admire the beauty of the ocean in its true colors. This material has a thickness of 41 cm which can withstand water pressure at depths over 20 meters. The elements that I will be focusing in building this new town are the transportation, sewage system, security system also the power, water, light and oxygen supply.

a) Transportation

Transportation is really important in a town as it allows people to move from one place to another place. Due to enclosed and small size of the town, people are encourage to cycle and walk in the city. There will be a bicycle tracks and and pedestrian walkway along the road. In this town, people are only allow to drive an Eco-friendly transport. All the car will

be place at the parking lot at the entrance of the town. For public transport, subway and will be provided for the residents.

Transport provided in Parasea town.

b) Sewage system

Each house will be provide a duct to collect sewage from the urban area. It will be transfer to a specific place to process the sewage into fertilizer and can be use in agriculture area.Plants can get nutrient from it.

c) Security system

Security system is the most important thing in my town. This system will be monitor every 24/7 from the control center.Emergency exit will be provided at every area in the event of evacuation for safety reason, highly effective control and fire-fighting systems in case of fire and smoke to minimize danger and damage. Also include high multilevel security system for:

Microwave, electric and seismic system

d) Power, water, light, and oxygen supply

For power supply, all the power come from the renewable sources such as underwater solar panel and wave energy.

For water supply, the sea water will undergo purification process and became clean water.

For light, it depend on the amount of sunlight that can reach to the town on morning. During night, lamps in the city will be on.

Lastly for oxygen supply, it will be collect from the sea water. Sea water are pump into air separator machine. And the air will be release to the town.

6.3 Parasea town

As my town is an underwater town,it could be develop into a tourists hot spot and can be a powerful economic sources.

Parasea consist of government area, business and commercial area, recreation area, residential area, education area, religious and culture area, service area, community area, forest and green area, hospitality and tourism area.

All the Parasea resident is a Malaysian. The town is about 30 km3 and the total population in Parasea town should be between 80 000 - 200 000 people.

6.4 Conclusion about the Parasea Town.

In my opinion, future town should consist a good planner with a high-tech and friendly environmental technologies. The future town should be livable and sustainable for the people to live. Parasea town might don’t has a futuristic building but it occupied with a good security system and it is eco-friendly and sustainable town to live i.

From this project I learnt that planning a city is not a easy task. Constructing a well developed town does not mean all the building should be place nicely but we have to consider how much it can be sustainable for more year to come.

A good town is a town that ensure the safety of the residents. It should prepare a precaution steps and create a defend team for safety reasons. Besides that, a sustainable town should withstand the climate change and natural disaster,

Lastly, to plan a city many think have to be consider such as water supply, oxygen supply, transportation, power supply and so on.
