The‘Seman3c Web’ ‘Linked Open Data’

What Linked Open Data enables| The Pelagios API
8
Context – obtain links to online data that may be relevant to your own
Discovery – users can find your data by following links on other partners’ sites
Reuse – the Pelagios API provides machine-‐readable representa3ons (JSON, RDF) to enable mashups and other forms of 3rd party re-‐use
Pelagios API Tools | Widgets
9
Pop-‐up elements you can embed on your own Web pages to display data from the Pelagios partners

Pelagios API in the Wild | Open Context
10
A free, open access resource for the electronic publica3on of primary field research from archaeology and related disciplines hVp://opencontext.org
Result pages for Pleiades places show small sidebar boxes with references from the Pelagios API
Pelagios API in the Wild | awld.js
11
A JavaScript library for Ancient World Linked Data, developed by Nick Rabinowitz and Sebas3an Heath, awld.js adds func3onality and visual elements based on links to stable URIs. hVp://isawnyu.github.com/awld-‐js/

How to link data| The Pelagios three steps to heaven
15
1. Make your data available over the Web with stable URIs
2. Map your place references to the Pleiades Gaze]eer of the Ancient World1
3. Publish place references as RDF
Pelagios considers place references to be “annota3ons” on your data – use the Open Annota<on2 RDF vocabulary
Use Vocabulary of Interlinked Datasets (VoID)3 for dataset metadata
1 hVp://pleiades.stoa.org/ 2 hVp://www.openannota3on.org/spec/beta/ 3 hVp://www.w3.org/TR/void/
Warning: that‘s the tough part!
Remember: this is separate from your data!
Challenges | Issues Iden3fied So Far…
Aggrega<ng Data – no two datasets are the same (and we are only collec3ng place references…)
RDF dumps – 1 dumpfile vs. 1.000s of dumpfiles vs. SPARQL
How to label appropriately? (references, data containing the reference)
Dataset par<<ons – no subsets vs. mul.ple levels of hierarchy
Dataset versioning – if you update your data…
Conceptualizing Data – how to express the rela3on between data & place
Find spot vs. origin, “depicts”, etc.
Uncertain references (probably made in…, from the vicinity of…)
Granularity & vague references (South Italy, Greek Islands)
Pelagios has been taking an (extreme?) “Keep it Simple” approach
“We should grow the Web of Data, not build it” 16
17
Reflec<ons | Growing a Web of Data
1. Linked Data can be simple and useful
2. Using a common vocabulary should precede using a common grammar
3. The Web is a two-‐way street, not a broadcast medium
4. We shouldn’t try to build the Linked Data Web all at once or all ourselves.
Introduce complexity through simple ini<a<ves that add immediate, mutual benefit
Find your own role within the wider ecology
