About Plan Ceibal and OLPC
• CEIBAL: Program of Uruguayan government• Giving 1 computer for every child in school
(6 to 11 years). 350.000 laptops.• Work with them on school and at home• WiFi access in schools and public spaces• Using XO computers from OLPC
• Other OLPC projects in many countries• (big in Peru, Rwanda and Mongolia)
Needs just to be in the cloud…• Health, alimentation, roof• Home, educational system• Access devices (computers), Internet access
The virtual and the real world
Culture Tools
1st need for active participation: Culture of using of the virtual world
• Statistics in Uruguay show:– Parents without external help don’t use Internet.• Why would I have to learn to use it?• In what may this be useful for me?
– Children usage is narrowly related to teacher’s interest
2nd need for active participation: Culture of sharing knowledge
• Responsible use
• Have good reasons for sharing– Work
together– Get support
3rd need for active participation:Avoid black boxes
• Direct and indirect contributions• Example (blogs): – WordPress– PHP– Server config, …
• Not bounded to commercial interests
Perspectives
• A new way of learning throughout the lifetime
• A new roll for teachers Enhanced• A new roll for family & society Participate!
• Culture change takes time• A tough road ahead
