Compassion? Professionalism? Common Sense?Which One weighs more In this Instance

by Brenda Thomas, Elite NewsEmail: [email protected]

Dallas Police Chief David Kunkle felthimself apologizing for the behavior ofone of his police officers who seeming-ly believes he had done the right thingat the time. He allowed the power ofhis uniform and of his weapon to speakup for him in the particular instance inquestion. Was he being professional?Yes, one might say so. Was he tryingto explain to NFL’s Running Back RyanMoats the error of his ways and conse-quences and what was ahead of him?Yes, he was doing that too. B-U-TOfficer Robert Powell dropped his com-passion; left his common sense athome in the drawer, and his rationaleflew out of the window.

Chief of Police David Kunkle whohas recently been scrutinized by thisentire community, by his officers, andby the media, felt compelled to dosomething about the situation, so heplaced Officer Robert Powell on paidadministrative leave.

During the traffic stop, caught on

another officer’s car camera, Powellberated the driver, 26 year old RyanMoats, NFL running Back, while hisfamily looked on in awe, and werestunned at the rationale of the PoliceOfficer, so actually the initial report wasmade by the office, after several dayshad passed. Well, sir, thank you somuch for not going along with thisunlawful behavior of your fellow officer.

Mr. Moats’ mother-law, 45 yearsold, Jonetta Collinsworth, was passingaway, and trying to hold on for dear life(literally speaking), as she waited onthe arrival of her entire family aroundher bedside. She held on for 13 min-utes, and then her time had come andshe went on to be with the Lord.

What Could HaveHappened – But Didn’t

1) Police Officer Powell did not haveto stop Moats from entering the bed-side of his mother-in-law, especiallywhile she was dying, as a nurse from

the hospital actually came and verifiedthe fact that Ryan Moats was telling thetruth.

2) Officer Powell, upon disbelief, could have escorted Mr. Moats in theroom with the family which would haveshowed some respect and dignity of theDPD.

3) Officer Powell could have puthimself in the position of the Moatsfamily and used his better judgment;could have called Headquarters – askeda Superior Officer what was the nextmove he should make, and then got theok from his Superior Officer.

BUT NO, it didn’t happen. Instead,he went on to write up the ticket, whichwas later dismissed, and then made anattempt to write an apology letter – butfor what? Who cares? This is trulyafter the fact? Was he trying to ease hisown conscious? Did he use his betterjudgment when the incident ocurred. We don’t think so.

By Darryl E. Blair, Elite NewsIn recent developments, the Dallas

Morning News has sought to highlight andembarrass various schools in the AfricanAmerican community. Blacks in Dallashave fallen victim to egregious decision byDISD and Mike Hinojosa. From thepulling of State Championships and illegalrelease of documents of students, neverin the history of the DISD as far back asthe leadership of WT White, Nolan Estes,Linus Wright, Marvin Edwards, YvonneGonzalez, Daniel Rojas, Chad Woolery, and Robert Paton, have we had to dealwith $84 Million dollar budget deficits, lowperforming schools, laying off of teachers, credit card scandals, low student achieve-ment and acknowledgment.

It appears that Superintendent MikeHinojosa has succumbed to the pressureof past, present, and pending mediareports, and the African American com-munity has been left to pay a dear price,as we are daily having our African

American administrators faced with thepossibility of losing jobs, in the name ofdoing damage control, or laying down tothe media.

Jerry Bob Chambers said, “DallasSuperintendents have a history of mess-ing over high school principals. And inMike Hinajosa the Black Administrativeleadership is under attack, and it will con-tinue until we organize and show up onRoss in mass numbers to demand fairtreatment or his resignation.”

“Napoleon Lewis took over Lincoln’snew school in 1980 and did a tremendousjob of raising the achievements of Lincoln, and making the City, State, and Nationaware of the Capabilities of those stu-dents who had otherwise been written offby the DISD and the South DallasCommunity. He gave the children direc-tion all the while providing a steady planfor teachers, Lincoln was, and still is abright shining light.”

Jerry Bob Chambers also said, “I have

a voice because I’ve put in the time.”Here’s a man (Principal Earl Jones) that’sworking with his kids at Lincoln to raisethe level of thinking for the communityand student growth, and we have beenable to use Lincoln as a springboard formotivation and moral booster for the chil-dren and community. But if we are notcareful, Hinojosa will steal it all away. Ashe is attempting to do, in stating that hewill re-assign Principal Earl Jones at theend of the year, and further send thesechildren and that community into anabyss of failure and revolving door ofprincipals.

Enter the latest move to accommo-date the media (DMN) who have soughtout what appears to be misdeeds by BlackSchool Administrators, who by allaccounts and purpose have chosen tohandle the situation of a student beingpaddled. This applies to Principal EarlJones at Lincoln who has been informed

"We now teach Guitar, Violin, and Saxophone.”

Has Superintendent Michael HinojosaBowed and Crumbled to the Media?

Prayer Closet, I wantto remind you of theimportance of “FullSurrender!”

Jeremiah tellsus (Jeremiah 29:13)how the Word of theLord came to him say-ing, “Ye shall seek me,and find me, when yeshall search for mewith all your heart.”We cannot expect topray effectively until

we come to God wholeheartedly. Nohalfhearted man ever made a success inbusiness. Only wholehearted husbandsand wives make successful marriages. So it is with praying! Some people makegood prayers only when they are desper-ate, only to discover that being desperatedoesn’t mean that we are wholehearted, but being wholehearted could revealhow desperate we are.

Matthew 6:14-15"For if you forgive men when theysin against you, your heavenlyFather will also forgive you." But ifyou do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive yoursins."

Before we get started inthe word of God I want to pose aquestion to you. I want you to thinkabout this question as to how itrelates to God. Let's imagine youare out at the beach. You are hav-

ing a great time doing your thing but you haven't noticedthe tide is dragging you out. You're having fun in the sununtil finally all of a sudden you are looking for the shoreand cannot find it! How would you feel? You would feellost, doomed, and you would be really afraid.

As you notice the sharks circling all of the sudden yousee a helicopter fly over you, and a man drops into thewater with you. He harnesses you on the rope and the hel-icopter takes you up leaving him behind. You ask the pilotabout that man and with tears in his eyes he tells you itwas his son. They did not have enough fuel to take youand still get him out too. But he tells you His son wantedto save your life and gave his own to do it.

You would feel a great deal of gratitude. You wouldwant to know more about this man that gave his life foryou. You would probably go to his grave and pay yourrespects and tell him you love him. Jesus did that for us.You would never forget that man. Never forget what Jesusdid for you. Jesus Saved Us! In Ephesians 2:4 the biblesays, "But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His greatlove with which He loved us, even when we were dead intrespasses, made us alive together with Christ by graceyou have been saved. Amen!

Remember where you come from. You have beengiven the gift of life through Jesus. By his sacrifice whenHe paid the price for your sins you were saved if you choseto let Him tie that rope around us and lift us to safety.According to Acts 2:21, "And it shall come to pass thatwhoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved."Amen!

Jesus died for us. The main thing I want you to con-sider is that Jesus died for you what are you doing for Him?You read He forgives sins. You know it's true because youexperienced it! Do you remember when you first came toGod and understood how He washed your sins away? Hedoesn't hold them against you anymore! Why wouldn't youlove Him?

There are times when you forget what Jesus hasdone. Your love seems to dwindle down because you donot remember how much you have been forgiven! You donot remember what it was like to be lost out in the worldwithout hope! You tend to forget those things and it makesit easy to become cold on the inside.

Let me ask you; when someone saves your life wouldnot you tell others about it? Would not you love that per-son enough to brag on them? All the time you see peoplebragging about their heroes who saved their lives. They goon TV and find it so easy to speak publicly about theirheroes and yet we find it hard at times just to walk over toour neighbor and say "Jesus saved me". "He wants to saveyou". Amen!

If you took it seriously and really thought about thelove God showed to us it would be so much easier to showlove to others. It would be easier to put something down

you enjoy to go tell someone about Jesus or to get in yourbible and grow in God. Jesus said "if you love me, keep mycommandments" Only two things did He really ever com-mand. One was to love. The other was to go and share thelove He gave us.

Let me tell you something about new Christians. Haveyou noticed the zeal and fire they have for God? Do youever wonder why that is? Just to share a personal andsomewhat embarrassing story. When I first came to God Ihad such a desire to share Him with others! I went to thework school and proceeded to share my faith as best Icould with my co-workers. I did not have a clue what I wasdoing, but I knew I needed to tell people about God! Theywere asking all these religious questions and I did notknow what to tell them. I was new to it all myself.

You see, I was forgiven. I had felt God take away myshame and sins. I knew what it was to feel the burden lift-ed. That is what makes new Christians such go getters. They know what God has done and Love Him so much forit! Later I learned more and started conforming more andmore into what God wanted from me. I learned more andwalked a narrower road. A lot of my bad habits were cur-tailed, but you know what I began to forget where I camefrom. I began to take the blood of Jesus for granted. Youcannot do that. You need to remember where you comefrom and where you were heading. You need to rememberthose sins you still deal with and those prideful thoughtswith your lack of urgency are still under the blood of Jesus! He has forgiven us! Doesn't that just make you love Himmore? Doesn't it make you want to tell someone about thislove you found? Stand out by having a Thankful and LovingHeart, from understanding God's Forgiveness. Amen!

What are you going todo this week? Are yougoing to get in the bible? Are you reading becauseyou love Jesus and want tobe better able to follow Himinto the lost world? If youare then why shut thedoor? Let's take the bibleout to the lost and sharethis love!

If you just rememberwhat God has done for usand start loving Him. Youwould be able to win thelost. They are looking forsomething different. Theyare looking for love. Theyhaven't really seen some-thing they want from us.They have seen us go towork like them, spend timeat the game like them, andjust be like them in general. You complain about yourboss and are angry at thesame things as them.

What do you have thatthey want? You have free-dom! You have a load takenoff of you that they stillcarry! You have a sure lifeeternal! But so many timesyou do not act like itbecause you do not really

remember what God has done! All they think you have isa belief in a book called the Bible!

People remember things that are out of place. If youopened the book "Where is Waldo" and everyone but himwas in total brown you could spot his red striped shirt amile off. Ladies and gentleman you are to be a peculiarpeople. You should be different than the world. You shouldhave something they do not. A grateful heart full of love. That is something they will see and notice. It is out ofplace. It is what will draw them. Show them you are morein love with God than anything else. Show them by beingwilling to tell them about the forgiveness you have foundand the freedom it gives you. That is different. Normal isslinging your car into their parking space and then invitingthem to church. They see it all the time.

To close I just want to remind you again that Jesus hasforgiven you of even more than you know. You should real-ize the weight of the forgiveness and love Him all themore. Your friends and family should see you show reallove to others. Love they do not see normally. Amen!

When you understand the true price that was paid itwill be easy to have a heart overflowing with love andthankfulness. So much so that the world will see it andwant it. It is why you are reading this message. To be ableto go with love from a forgiven heart to reach the lost.

Think about it when you go home. Think about howGod saved you. Sometimes you need to remember how itbegan to know how to get to your destination. You needto remember what God has done and tell others what Hewill do. Go to the lost with thanksgiving and to God foryour salvation. Lastly, now you know you must rememberLove through Forgiveness. Amen!

Here is good news. It wasalways God's plan for Jesus Christto die on the cross. Why? God isdispleased with human sin andevil. God is also merciful. He pro-

vided a perfectsacrifice to payfor hate, mur-der and rebel-lion. That sacri-fice was thedeath of Christon the cross.

As proof Hea c c e p t e dChrist's sacri-fice for sin,"God raisedHim up again"(Acts 2:24).

Christ "humbled Himself bybecoming obedient to the point ofdeath, even death on a cross. Therefore also God highly exaltedHim" (Philippians 2:8-9). Christwas exalted by being raised fromthe dead. He then ascended intoheaven. The disciples saw Him."He was lifted up while they werelooking on, and a cloud receivedHim out of their sight" (Acts 1:9).Where did Christ go? "When Hehad made purification of sins, Hesat down at the right hand of theMajesty on high" (Hebrews 1:3).Jesus Christ sat on the throne ofheaven so that "every knee shouldbow . . . and that every tongueshould confess that Jesus Christ isLord" (Philippians 2:10-11).

This truly is the Good News.Jesus Christ is risen and He is nowreigning as Lord. You become atrue Christian if "you confess withyour mouth Jesus as Lord, andbelieve in your heart that Godraised Him from the dead"(Romans 10:9).

Our Sunday school les-son “Envisioning newlife” Ezekiel 47:1-12 istruly an inspiration to allGentile believers. Godshows Ezekiel how vastwould be the spreadingof the word of God. Afterthe restoration of Israel, the rebuilding of theTemple, the restoring oftemple worship for theJews God shows how his

grace and mercy would flow from thepresence of God to every nation. Thespreading of God’s grace brought life toeverything and everybody that it touched. We are able today to approach God as hispeople because of the out flowing of theGospel of grace. If you have accepted thefinished work of Calvary then you havebeen touched by this life giving flow. These waters bring life to the driest placesand persons, nothing or no one that have

been partaker of God’s grace can remaindead. There should be life in our worshipservices, life in our preaching, life in ourout reach to the world. Every believershould spend some time telling someoneabout this living water. Our morning mes-sage was delivered by our beloved pastorEld.L.T.Morgan from the subject “Whatmanner of people ought we to be” from2Peter 3:10-14. We seldom hear anythingabout the second coming of the Lord inour churches anymore, it seem that every-one is more interested in getting all theycan in this present world. Peter warns usthat one day everything that we can see, touch or smell will pass away. Because weknow that this world is temporal weshould be preparing for the world to comewhich is eternal. Jesus said he was comingas a thief in the night “are you ready?”What would it profit us if we gained thiswhole world and lose our soul? Be blessedBrenda King

WILL HAVE A NOTE BURNING SERVICE TO CELEBRATE THE PURCHASE OF THEIR CHURCH AND PROPERTY!

Advice Column: Ask Dr. Karen HollieDear Dr. Hollie,

My son is eleven years oldand there’s a boy at ourchurch the same age. Heand my son are really goodfriends while at church. They want to sit together atall the church services andevents. This week, theother little boy and hismother asked if my soncould spend a weekend withthem to celebrate the boy’sbirthday. I’m okay with itbut my husband is not. Myhusband and my mother, who goes to thesame church, are always making fun ofhim because they say he has “gay” ways. The way he talks and just a lot of littlethings he does; for instance, he does asplit really well. Now, because of all that,my husband does not want our son to go

to the boy’s home becausehe said he doesn’t want myson to come home gay. Ithink this is ridiculous andI want him to go. What doyou think?

Troubled Thinking

Dear Troubled,

I think that since your motherand husband have someapprehension, I probablywould not let him go.However, his perceived “gay-

ness” just may be their perception; I would notprejudge this child. I would use this opportuni-ty, though, to talk to my son about his sexuali-ty as well as include a lesson on tolerance.

Blues guitar man Lucky Peterson spentyears establishing himself as a powerfulsinger, but on DARLING FOREVER, hecedes the vocal spotlight to his wife,Tamara. Fortunately, she proves more thanable to take the reins. Herthroaty, soulful voice fullyinhabits tunes that mixcontemporary blues, R&B,and Funk. Her husbandspeaks mainly through hisguitar here, but he doespitch in with vocals on acouple of tracks, and thepair's gifts make for quitethe musical marriage.

What a lot of people do not understandabout the president that we have today isreally a mystery to most people who do notknow anything about God. According tothe up bringing of President Obama, it was

God who prepared himfrom his youth to now.Just look at him, thingswere not all that easy forhim. He finished at thetop of his class atHarvard University, andnow he is our President. The thing, which isunusual about this presi-dent compared to theother 43 presidents, isthe fact that this presi-dent is over qualified for

the job of president. If you do a researchon the other 43 presidents, you will findthat John F. Kennedy is the only presidentwho comes close to the knowledge of thispresident. The White House and this coun-try have never seen or witnessed a mindlike President Obama’s ever to sit in theseat of President of America.

President Obama puts me in the mindof Nehemiah in – Nehemiah 2:11-16. If

you read this section of scripture you willfind that Nehmiah knew that sharing withthe people of Jerusalem without doingsome research and planning was a mis-take. He took a few people into his confi-dence that he could trust (His cabinet). Then he made a careful survey of the wallsto analyze the problem he faced. Afterspending many night hours of carefullysurveying the walls to avoid letting othersknow his plans before they were fixed inhis own mind. During these night hours hewas able to develop an effective plan toaccomplish the task he was put in office toaccomplish. When we get to the 17thverse we find that after Nehemiah hadcompleted his secret survey and was satis-fied that he had developed a workableplan, the time had come to reveal to thecommon people. First he challenged themto notice their deplorable circumstances, which had brought them trouble and dis-grace. Then he challenged them to rebuildthe wall of Jerusalem and followed hischallenge with a personal testimony. Thesame thing that happened in Jerusalemwill soon happen here in America. Lookwhat happened when Nehemiah gave hischallenge, the people’s negative feelings

became positive. Despair turned to hope. They responded and began the rebuildingprocess. This will soon happen right herein America, because all of these negativetalkshow programs, and red neck attitudesagainst President Obama because of racewill soon have to disband their tacticsbecause of the success revealed as he saidit would. Nobody has ever seen a presidentthis cool and calm about his every moveand thought. He’s assured of what he isdoing will work, the same as Nehemiah, because he knew God was with him.President Obama knows that God is withhim. First of all he knows that he neverwould have gotten into this position had itnot been for God.

Just look at the parallelisms here:Israel was in slavery over 400 years-Negro’s was also in slavery over 400 years, and from George Washington to BarackObama is over 400 years. This seems to beGod’s gage, or whatever method, it’s God’stime, but there is a parallelism here thatmeans something for us to take a look at.

You see, President Obama is withstand-ing the same identical thing Nehemiah didin his day. You see, all these negative talk-

So what does it accomplish tomove this accomplished, driven principal toanother campus, and take away stability, progress, and accomplishment fromLincoln? What will moving Earl Jonesaccomplish? Absolutely Nothing! Butfurther isolate a school and a school sys-tem from growth, why is it that the onlytools of correction are being used areAfrican American Administrators and ourcommunity, where was this measurementof correction as it relates to Caucasians, and Hispanic Administrators with regardsto the budget, and all of the financial scan-dals? you show proof of “wrong doing” andallow us the decency of seeing thesethings come down the pipes as oppose toletting the other media and media outletsblindside us with allegations and firings.

We as a community and people needto take a stand now against the detrimen-tal acts against our students and commu-nity. We are at a critical point in theAfrican American Community and shouldno longer take the setbacks and disrespectfrom the leadership of the DISD. Orlando, Florida – Sunday, March29, the spectators at the Arnold PalmerInvitational Golf Classic watched TigerWoods make a “cool” comeback, as heperformed the seemingly impossible. They said it couldn’t be done. They saidhe wouldn’t do it. But they forgot aboutthe awesome ability of the “T” man whenhe gets a golf club in his hands.

Sean O’Hair surely did not expect himto do it. He was leading the golfers at onetime at the top of the liter board, andTiger was trying to recover from recon-structive knee surgery a week after his USOpen meeting.

Woods put the putt in the hole andbroke into a routine that was similar to ayear ago. He crouched and backpedaledas the ball rolled to the hole, but insteadof slamming his cap to the ground, hepunched the air with a roundhouse andhugged his caddie, Steve Williams, wholifted him slightly into the air.

“Will the blue jacket help him win agreen one?

It does, a lot," Woods said. "This windefinitely validates all the things I've beentrying to do."

He hit the ball beautifully two weeksago at Doral and couldn't make a putt. Hescraped it around for the better part ofthree days at Bay Hill and was saved byhis short game. Everything fell together ina final round Sunday that was delayed fortwo hours by rain.

The victory was helpful, but it was themanner in which he won that excitedWoods.

For the first time since Torrey Pines,he felt his heart race and his adrenalinerush. After spending four hours trying to

catch up to O'Hair, he spent the final hourtrying to hang on.

It wasn't without some drama.O'Hair, who made only one birdie in

his round of 73, was clinging to a one-shot lead on the par-3 14th when Woodscaught a plugged lie under the lip of thebunker. He blasted out to just over 12feet, while O'Hair had a 15-footer forbirdie.

"Sean looked like he made his putt, and if he makes and I miss, all of a sud-den there's three shots," Woods said.

O'Hair missed. Woods made his par putt. And on the next hole, Woods drained

a 25-foot birdie putt to tie for the lead. The sun began to dip behind the

trees, lowering the temperatures, andO'Hair believes that might have cost him.He had a 7-iron from the 16th fairwaythat was going right of the flag when itfell short and tumbled into the water.Woods hacked out of the rough and hit asplendid wedge to 3 feet to save par, giv-ing him a one-shot lead.

"I think what happened is when thesun was going down a little bit, I guessthat kind of proved to me that the ballwasn't quite going as far," O'Hair said.

Woods could relate. He posed over a4-iron that was headed right for the flagwhen it came down short and into anoth-er plugged lie under the lip of a bunker. This time, Woods made bogey and theywere tied again.

It came down to the final hole, whichis Woods' domain - especially at Bay Hill.

He won with a birdie on the 72ndhole for the third time at the ArnoldPalmer Invitational. There was a 15-footbending birdie to beat Phil Mickelson in2001, and the 25-footer to beat BartBryant last year.

Woods, who finished at 5-under 275,won for the 66th time in his career. Andwhile the finish was so similar to his BayHill victory last year, this was different.

"Last year ... there wasn't any bigcomeback or anything. I was out therejust competing as usual," Woods said."This time, it was a little bit different. Ihadn't been in the mix since the U.S.Open, so it was neat to feel the heat onthe back nine again."

And did that heat feel any different?"No it didn't," he said. "It's like Stevie

was saying out there, this feels like wehadn't left. You can understand thatsometimes.

Alot of rednecks in this coun-try would rather see thiscountry suffer, and them-selves also, rather than seea Black President accom-plish his goal for America. There are many that wouldlike to see President Obamafail in his desire to bringcreditability back toAmerica, they do not want itto be a person of color thatdoes it.

The Lord put PresidentObama there and everybodybetter understand that. Yousee, the American publicwas Artaxerxes (the king)who let President Obama goto the White House, the

same way Artaxerxes theKing of Persia allowedNehemiah to go toJerusalem. Do we see theparallelisms here? It’s thecomparison we are lookingat right here. After readingabout Nehemiah in SundaySchool we thought this isgone and forgotten, no, no,here it is again. Just in a dif-ferent manner, but the samemethods and situations.“But God”- God is good, andnobody can hamper God'splan for what is already His.If nobody else prays forPresident Obama, let uspray for him. God alreadyhas him in his hand, but thatdoes not mean we do nothave to pray for him.
