TRANSLATOR'SFOREWARDln the Name of Allah. Mosl Grgcious, Most Merciful

I found this treatiseof the Muslim's creeda conciseand useful pre-sentation of a very important topic. The needfor this treatise, especiallyamong the non-Arabic speaking eaders.cannot be over-estimated.The-refore, I decided o transalte t and make it accessableo English readers.I would like to draw the attention of the readers o the followingpoints:

    l. I gave he book the title THE MUSLIM'S BELIEF insteadof theauthor's'Agidat Ahl rs Sunnahwe-l-Jami.ah which may be trans-lated as The Creedof the Peopleof Sunnahand Mejority. I thinkmy preferences justified by:a) The title I preferred s shorterb) The two titlesmeanalmost the samec) The original title contains ome echnical erms hat are not onlydiff icult to translate, but alsodiff icult to understand y many rea-ders.d) The original title may antogonize omereaderswho are misin-formed about the true designations f the words in the originalt i t le .

    2. I provided, n parenthesesfter everyQur'dnic verse, he numberscf chaptersand verses uoted by the author without giving theirproper reference. This I deemed useful for readers who do notknow the Qur'an by heart and would like to check any of theseverses.3. Becausehe author, in most cases, uotesor paraphrases omeofthe Prophetic raditions without indicating hem to the readers.tried, whenever could recognize hese raditions, o put them inquotationsand to cite in parentheseshe Propheticcollections nwhich they are reporred. n most cases limited myself o Bukhariand Muslim collections, wheneverhesaying s quoted n them. If i tis not in these wo collections,'l mention one or two of the othercollections hat contain the quoted saying.4. I provided he arrangement f the text nto chapters nd headl ines

for easeof readingand understanding. also provided a table ofcontents or easeof reference.

    5. ln translating he Qur'6nic verses uoted n this treatise, did notfollow any specific translation of the Qur'in. I benefited rommore than one, but followed my own preference. It is my sincere esireand hope hat this book would be of greathelp

to thosewho consult t. Please nclude n your prayerall thosewho con-tributed to its presentshape.

AUTHOR'S INTRODUCTIONIn the Name of Al lah, Most Gracious,Mosl Merc i fu l .

Praise e o the Lord of the universe ho gires hebest eward o t l rcgodfearingand the great oss o the transgressor. bearwitness hat thereis no God but Allah; He hasno partnerand possesseseal sovereignty.bear witness hat Muhammad is His servantand messenger;he sealofthe Prophetsand the leaderof the godfearing.May Allah blesshim andblesshis family, companionsand thosewho follow them til l the Day ofJudgement.

Allah hassentHis messenger uhammad, peacebe upon him' withthe realguidance nd the true religionasa mercy o mankind, a model forthose who do good, and Allah's argument againstmankind. ThroughMumhammadand what was revealedo him, namely, he Qur'6n and thePropheticsayings,Allah showedmankind all meansof reforming them-selvesand straighterring heir religious and mundane affairs in soundbeliefs, ight conducts, ine morals, and laudablemanners. The Prophet, peacebe upon him, 'left his followers' on a clear straight path, only thedoomedwill deviate rom it." (lbn Mdjah & Ahmad) His followers, hecompaniorrs, heir followers and those who faithfully followed them arethe best of mankind. They established is law, upheld his way and heldfast to it as a belief and piactice,a moral and manner.By this, "They areconsidered he party who are victorious, on the straight path, unharmedby those who are against hem til l the end of the world." (Bukhiri &Muslirl).

We, thanks to Allah, are following their footstepsand guided bytheir exampleswhich are supportedby the Qur'dn and the Prophetic tra-ditions. We are saying his only as an announcement f Allah's blessingsand clarificationof what everyMuslim shouldbelieve. We pray to Allahthat He may keepusand our brotherson the straightpath in this ife andin the Hereafter and give us mercy from Him, He is the Giver.

It is beeauseof the importance ol this topic and the difference ofopinions about it, that I want to briefly explain our creed- the belief ofthe Sunnites and the main stream Muslims (Ahl as-Sunnehwr-l-Jami'ah). This creed s the belief n Allah, His Angels,His Books,His Messengers,he Day of Judgement, and Fate whethergood or bad. Iprav to Allah to make this effort sincere or His sake, n agreementwithHrs wish, and useful for His people. M.S .U .

We believe hat "There is nothing whatever ike unto Him, He is thcAll-Hearing, the AII-Seeing.To Him belongs he keys of the Hea-vensand the Earth. He enlarges nd restr ic ts rovis ions o whomHe wills. SurelyHe has knowledgeof everything." (42:l l-12).We believe hat "There is no creature hat moves n the Earth but it sprovision dependson Allah. He knows its dwelling and its restingplace.AII is recorded n a clear Book." (l l:6)We believe hat "With Him are the keysof the Unseen;none knowsthem but He. He knows what is in land and sea;not a leaf falls, butHe knows it. Not a grain in the deep darknessof the Earth, not athing greenor dry but it is in a clear Book." (6:59).We believe hat "Allah alone has the knowledgeof the Hour, sendsdown rain, and knows what is in the wombs. No soul knows what itshall earn tomorrow, and no soul knows in what land it shall die.Surely,Allah is All-knowing, All-aware." (31:34)We believe that Allah speakswbatever He pleaseswhenever {epleases And Allah spoke to Moses directly." Q:164) "And whenMoses came at Our appointedplace, and his Lord spoke to him."(7:143) We called o him from the right sideof the Mount (Sinai),and We brought him near n communion." (19-52)We believe hat "If the oceanbecame nk for the words of my Lord, the ocean would be finished before the words of my Lord came loan end." (18:109) And i f a l l the trees hat are in the earth werepens, and the ocean(were nk), with sevenoceans welling t there-fore, the words of Allah would not be exhausted.Surely, Allah isMighty, Wise." (31 27).We believe hat Allah's words are the most truthfirl in conveyinginformation, the most ust in ruling, and the fairest n conversation. He said, "The word of your Lord has been fulfil led in truth andjust ice." (6: l15) "And who is more truthfu l in his word thanAllah?" (4:74).We believe hat the Qur'an is Alllh's words. He literally spoke t toGabriel who conveyed t to the Prophet, peacebe upon him: "Say(O Muhammad) the Holy Spirit has brought it down from yourLord in truth." (16:102) Truly it is the revelationof the Lord ofthe worlds brought down upon your heart by the Faithful Spirit scthat you may be one of the warners, n a clear Arabic tongue."(26:192-5)We believe hat Allah is well abovehis creatures n His personandHis Attributes, becauseHe says, "He is the High, lhe Great."

ALLAH'S WILL: UNIVERSAL AND LEGAL- We believe hat His will is of two kinds:Universal will: through which His intention is carried out. It is notnecessaryhat what is carried out is liked by Him. This type of will meanspermission,as Allah said, "Had Allah willed, they would not have foughtone against he other, but Allah doeswhateverHe desires," 2:253)and"If Allah desires o leadyou astray,He is your Lord." (ll:34).Legal will: which does not necessarilyentail that the execution of Hisdesire. The wil l, in this case, cannot be but what He likes, as He said,"Allah wants to forgive you." (4:21)

    - We believe hat His universaland legal wills are part of His wisdom.Every thing He performs in the universeor requires egally from Hiscreatures s for a good reason and according to His wisdom, whe-ther we grasp it or it escapes ur reasons:"ls not Allah the best ofJudges?" (95-9), "And who is better than Allah in judgement fora peoplewho have irm faith." (5:50)- We believe hat Allah loves His selectservantsand they love Him:"Say if you love Allah, follow me and Allah will love you," (3:31)"Allah will bring a people whom He will love and who will loveHim", (5:45) "Allah loves he steadfast," (3:146)"And act justly, surely, Allah loves the just," (49:9) and "Do good; Allah lovesthosewho do good." (5:93)- We believe that Allah likes what He prescribedof good deeds andsayings nd He dislikeswhat He prohibitedof bad deedsandsayings: If you disbelieve, urelyAllah does not needyou, yet Hedoes not like disbelief for His servants; f you are thankful, thispleasesHim," (39:7), "But Allah disliked their marching forth. SoHe kept them back, and it was said to them: "Stay with the weak-l ings." (9:aQ.- We believe hat Allah is pleasedwith thosewho believe n Him anddo good deeds: "Allah is well pleasedwith them and they are wellpleasedwith Him. That is for him who fearshis Lord." (98:8)- We believe hat Allah is angry with those who deserveHis angeramong the non-believers nd others; "And those who think evilthoughts of Allah, against hem shall be the evil turn of fortune.Allah is angry with them." (48:6) "But whoeveropenshis heart todisbelief, on them is Allah's wrath and they shall have a severep"rnishment. (16:106).

MORE OF ALLAH'S ATTRIBUTES- We believe hat Allah has a gloriousand dignifi ed face: "There willreinain he face of your Lord, majesticand splendid." (55:27)- We believe that Allah has two generoushands: "No, both Hishandsare wide open; He spendshow He pleases," 5:64) "They donot esteemAllah with the esteem hat is due to Him. The wholeEarth wil l be His handful on the Day of Resurrection, and theHeavenswil l be rolled up in His right hand. Glory be to Him andexalted s He above hat which they associate ith Him." (39-67)- We believe that Allah possesseswo real eyes, becauseHe said,"And bui ld the ark under Our eyesas We reveal ." ( l l :37) TheProphet, peace be upon him, said, "His veil is light. Had Heremoved t, the sublimity of His countenancewould have burnt allthat His sight reached." (Muslim & Ibn Mijah) The Sunnitesuna-nimously have agreed hat His eyesare two. This is supportedbythe Prophet's saying about rhe Dajjdl (the anri-Christ) hat "he isone-eyed nd your Lord is not one-eyed." Bukhiri & Muslim)- We believe hat "Eyes cannot perceiveHim, but He perceives heeyes,He is the Incomprehensib le,he Al l -aware." (6:103)- We believe that the believerswill see their Lord on the Day ofResurrection: Upon that day some facesshall be radiant, gazingupon their Lord." (15:22-3)- We believe hat Allah has no equalbecauseHis Attributes are per-fect: "There is nothing whatsoeverike unto Him. He is the Al l -Hearing, he Al l -Seeing." 42: l l )- We believe hat "No slumber or sleepseizesHim," (2:255)becauseHis life is perfectand eternal.- We believe hat He does not do injustice o anybody becauseHis

fairness s perfect.- We believe hat He is not unawareof His servants'deedsbecause fHis perfectsupervision nd comprehensive nowledge.- We believe hat He is capableof doing anything n the Heavensorin the Earth because f His perfect knor.rledge nd power: "lndeedHis command, when He desires thing, is only to say to it 'Be' andi t i s . " (36 :82 )- We believe hat He is free from wearinessand weaknessbecauseofHis super-power: Surely, We created he Heavensand the Earthand all that is between hem in six days, and no wearinessouchedUs." 50:38).

"bringing good tidings and warning, so that mankind might haveno argument against Allah after the messengers.Allah is All-mighty, All-wise." (4:165)

THE FIRST AND LAST MESSENGERS- We believe hat the first among the Messengerss Noah and the

last is Muhammad, peacebe upon them all. "We revealed o youas We revealed o Noah and the Prophets after hiin." (a:163)"Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but the Mes-sengerof Allah and the Sealof the Prophets." (33:40)

THE BEST MESSENGERS- We believe that the best among the messengerss Muhammad,

then Abraham, then Moses, then Noah and then Jesus, son ofMary. It is they who are meant by the following Qur'inic verse:"And when We took compact from the Prophets, and from you,and from Noah. and Abraham, Moses, and Jesus, son of Mary.We took from them a solemncompact." (33:7)

    - We bel ieve that Muhammad's message, peacebe upon him, includesall the merits of the messages f those dignified messen-gers becauseAllah says, "He ordained for you that He enjoinedon Noah and what He revealed o you and what He enjoined onAbraham Moses and Jesus, namely, establishedhis faith and beuni ted n i t . " (42:13)

MESSENGERSARE HUMAN BEINGS- We believe that al l messenSers re created human beings who

have none of the divine qualities of Allah. Allah, the Exalted.said about Noah. who was the first among them, "l do not say oyou, ' l possesshe treasures f Al lah, ' I do not know the unseen, and I do not say: ' l am an angel ' . " ( l l :31) Al lah directedMuhammad who is the last among them to say: "I do not say toyou I possess he treasuresof Allah, nor do I know the unseen, and I do not say to you 'l am an angel." (6:50) And to say: "lhave no power to bring profit or hurt for myself, but as Allah

wills." (7:188) And also to say: "1 have no power to hurt orbenefit you. Say none can protect me from Allah, nor can I findany refugebesidesHim." (72:21-2)- we believe that the messengers re among Allah's servants.Heblessed hem with the message nd described hem as servants, nthe context of praising and honouring them. So, He saysaboutNoah, the first among them: .,you.,are the descendants f thosewhom We carried with Noah, he was a truly thankful servant."( 7 :3 )Allah said about the last among them, Muhammad, peacebe uponhim: "Blessedbe He who sentdown the eur'dn to His servant, hat hemay warn mankind. (25 ) He saidabout someother messengers:Andmention our servantsAbraham, Isaac, and Jacob men of might andvision." (38:45) And rememberour servantsDavid who wasa mightyand peni tentman." (38: 7) "And to David, wegaveSoloman, e wasanexcellent nd penitentservant." (38:30)Allah saidabout Jesus, on of Mary: ,,He isonly a servantwhom Weblessed nd we madehim an example o the childrenof Isreal." (63:59)- we believe hat Allah concludedall messages ith the message f

Muhammad, peacebe upon him, to all peoplebecauseAllah said:"Say, 'O mankind, I am Al lah 's messengero you al l . To Himbelongs he Kingdom of the Heavensand the Earth; There is nogod but He. He ordains life and death. So believe n Allah andHis messenger,he unletteredprophet who believes n Allah andHis words. Fol low him so that you may be r ight ly guided."(7: 58)

ISLAM: THE UNIVERSAL AND FINAL MESSAGE- we believe hat rhe Sharijah of the prophet Muhammad, peacebe upon him, is the religion of Isram which Ailah has chosen orHis servantsand does not accept from anyone other rerigion, becauseAl lah, the Exal ted, said, , ,Surely, rhe true rel ig io-nnAl lah 's s ight s Is lam," (3:19)and.He also said, . .Today I haveperfectedyour religion for you and I have completedmy favourupon you, and I have chosen slam to be your re l ig ion., , (5:3)And "whoever desires religion other than Isram, t wilr neverbeaccepted rom Him, and in rhe Hereafrer he will be among thelose rs . The second evel s Recording:we believehat Altah has recordedin the Secured ablet (el-Lrwlr el-Mahfodh)whatevers going rohappenuntil the Day of Judgement.Did you not know that Allahknowsall that is in Heavenand Earth?Surery hat is in a Book.Surely hat for AIIah s an easymatter." e2.n\

  • 8/2/2019 En the Muslims Belief Part2

    28/33

The third level is Will: We believe that Allah has willed everythingin the Heaven and Earth. Nothing happens exceptby His will; wha-tever He wills, will take place; and whatever He does not wish, willnot take place. The fourth level is Creation: We believe that "Allah is the Creatorof all things; He is the Guardian over all things, and to Him belongthe keys of the Heavensand the Earth." (39:62-3)The fourth level include whatever Allah Himself does and whateverHis creatures o. So, all that peopleperform of sayings, deeds, oromissions are known to Allah and He has recorded them, willedthem and created them, "To those among you who will to beupright. But you shall not will exceptas Allah wills, the Lord of theWorlds." (81:28-9) "And has Allah willed they would not havefought one against he other; but All ah doeswhateverHe desires."(2:253) Had Allah willed, they would not havedone so, but leavethem alone and their false nventions." (6:137) And Allah createdyou and what you do." (37:96)

MEN'S FREEWILL- We believe, however, that Allah has granted man a power and afreewill by which he performs his action. That man's deedsare byhis power and freewill can be proven by the following points:

Firstly, Allah's saying, "So approachyour fields (wives)when andhow you will." (2:223) "Had they desired to go forth, they wouldhave made some preparation for it." (9:46) In these'verses llahaffirmed for man "a going forth" by his will and "a preparation"by his desire.Secondly, directing man to do or not to do. If man has no freewilland power, these directions mean that Allah is asking man to dothat which he cannot. This proposition is rejected by Allah'swisdom, His mercy and His truthful statement n the verse"Allahdoes not charge a soul beyond its capacity." (2:286)Thirdly, Praising the virtuous for his deedsand blaming the evil-doer for his actions and rewarding each of them with what hedeserves.f the action is not done by the individual's freewill, thenpraising the virtuous is a joke and punishing the evildoer is aninjustice, and Allah is, of course, free from joking and beingunjust.

  • 8/2/2019 En the Muslims Belief Part2

    29/33

Fourthly, Allah has sent messengerswho are "bearing goodtidings, and warning, so that mankind might have no argumentagainst Allah after the messengers." 40:165) If the individual'saction is not performed by his freewill, his argument s not invali-dated by the sen{ing of messengers.Fifthly, every doer of actions feels that he does or does not do athing without any coercion. He standsup and sits; comes n andgoesout; travels and stays by his own freewill without feeling any-body forcing him to do any of theseactions. n fact, he clearlydis-tinguishes between doing something of his own freewill andsomeoneelse forcing him to do that action. The Islamic law alsowisely distinguishesbetween these states of affairs. It does notpunish a wrong-doer or an action done under compulsion.

NO EXCUSE N FATE TOR S INNI ,RS- We believe hat the sinner has no excuse n Allah's Divine Decreebegause e commits his sin by his freewill, without knowing thatAllah has decreed t on him. That is. because o one knows Allah'sdecree before it takes place: "No soul knows what it wil l earntomorrow." (31:34) How can it be possible, hen, to presentanexcuse hat is not known to the personwho is advancing t when hecommits his offence? Altah invalidated this type of argument inHis saying: "The idolaters wil l say 'Had Allah willed, we wouldnot have been idolaters, neither our fathers, nor would we haveforbidden anything.'So did the people before rhem cry lies untilthey tasted our might. Say: 'Have you any proofs that you canshow us? You follow nothing but assumption, and you are lying."(6:148) We say to the sinner who is using Divine Decreeas anexcuse: 'Why did not you perform deeds of obedience assumingthat Allah has decreed hem upon you since there is no differencebetween them and sins in being unknown before they happenedfrom you? That is why when Prophet Muhammad told his com-panions hat everyone'sposition in Paradiseor Hell has beenassi-gned, they said: "Should not we rely on this and stop working?"He said: "No, work and every one will be directed o what he iscreated or," (Bukhdri & Muslim)We may say to the sinner who is trying to find excuse n DivineDecree: Suppose, you want to travel to Makkah. There are two roadsthat may take you there. You are told by a truthful person hat one ofthese oads s dangerous nd difficult, the other s easyand safe. You will

  • 8/2/2019 En the Muslims Belief Part2

    30/33

take the second ne. You will not take the first road and say t is decreedupon me. If you did, peoplewould consideryou crazy. We may alsosay o him: "lf you areoffered wo jobs, one of them s

higher n salary. You wi l l certa in ly ake the one with the highersalary. How come do you choosdwhat is lower in rhe Hereafterand useDivineDecreeas an excuse?"

We may further say o him: "We seeyou whenyou are nflictedwitha disease, ou knock every phy'sician's oor looking for treatmentandbearingwhateverpain that may result from surgicaloperationsand thebi t terness f medic ine.Why do not you do the samewhenyour heart sspir i tual ly ickwith s ins?"EVII , NOT ATTRIBUT},D T0 ALI,AH- We bel ievehat evi l shouldnot be attr ibuted o Al lah because f Hisperfect mercy and wisdom. The Prophet said: "And cvil is not

attr ibutable o You." (Musl im) Thus, Al lah 's decreeby i tsel f hasno evil whatsoeverbecause t is coming from mercy and wisdom.Evi l may, however, esul t rom someof His decrccs, ecauseheProphct said in the suppl ic i l l ion or gunI l which hc taught toal-Hasan: "And protect us from the evil of what You decreed"(Tirmith i & Others)Here, thc Proplrctat tr ibutedo' i l to what Hcdecreed.Despi te his, ev i l in His decrees not pure evi l . l t is ratherevil in one respect, ood in anothcr or it is cvil in onc case, and goodin another. Thus, corrupt ion n the land resul t ing rom drought, disease, overty and fear is evil, but it is good in another rcspccl.Al lah, the Exal ted a id: "Corrupt ion hasappearcd n thc land andsea for what men's hands have earned.Allah has ordained this formen, so that they may tastesomeo[ what they havedone, in ordcrthat they may rurn back (frorn evi l ) . " (30:41)Cutt ingoff the th ief 'shand or stoning he adul terer s a n evi l th ing for the th ief and theadulterer, but it is good for them in one respect ecauset is a puri-ficatidn for them so that the punishment of this life and thcHereafter are not combined for them. lt is also good in anothe!'respect. The application of these punishment is a protection ol'property, honors, and relationships.
