What to do with your children? This is a difficult question to answer… but one to which an answer pops up at the corner of every street in Paris. How about a stroll down the Grands Boulevards, from the Musée gourmand du Chocolat to the 300 wax figures of the Musée Grévin, followed by a visit of what it’s like behind the scenes at a great cinema? Or a tour in a 2CV or on a tandem bicycle, to discover some highly unusual facet of Paris? Underground, at the heart of the Catacombes, or up in the air, onboard a tethered balloon? All around Paris, a short ride away by metro, in a regional train or onboard a shuttle bus, beautiful formal gardens resonate to the sounds of rock concerts or are lit up by countless candles. Magnificent settings replete with history echo the high points of the impressionist period or are used as the setting for mediaeval shows. Mickey Mouse and his gang or Astérix and those crazy Gauls will drag you into their madcap attractions and grandiose shows, while tigers, giraffes, sharks and tortoises await to be inspected at close quarters…Programmes for youngsters, surprising and fun educational tools, free attractions, hot tips, advice, access… Find it all in the following pages which will unveil the secret to making your stay in Paris a great family adventure and unlock the riches that Paris and its region have to offer.

Jardin des Tuileries MapC3

To explore this garden linking the Louvre and Place de la Concorde, stand with your back to the Pyramide du Louvre. The eastern entrance to the Tuileries is next to the arc de triomphe du Carrousel, constructed by Napoleon I. Before you stretches a green maze dotted with statues by Aristide Maillol.

A little further away is the first lake, which is oval and around which children sail their little boats. Behind this water feature you will find the most wooded area of the gardens, decorated with contemporary sculptures by Max Ernst, Penone and Lichtenstein.

At the western end, on either side of the octagonal pond, are two identical constructions: the Jeu de Paume - presenting exhibitions of photography and images from the 19th to the 21st century - and the Musée de l’Orangerie - housing Monet’s famous Nymphéas as well as works by Renoir, Matisse and others.

Go behind the scenes: the mythical Parisian cinema unveils the secrets of the 7th art, thanks to a playful and interactive visit designed for big and small alike, making it a treat for the entire family.Begin with an exact replica of the projection room of the Grand Rex. The enormous rolls of film remind us, with a bit of irony perhaps, that the role of a projectionist has remained unchanged, even thought the film making process had significantly progressed. A little further on, a sound effects studio takes you onto the streets of New York as you run to escape King Kong!Take a walk through the « tunnel des stars » and amuse yourself by identifying the voices of legendary stars of the silver screen. Finally, slide into the skin of a real Hollywood hero as you take their place on the film set.

In the heart of Paris, among the old capital buildings, sits an imposing building with lifts and escalotors, wrapped in coloured tubes. The construction was intentionally imagined by architects Richard Rogers and Renzo Piano to be designed with industrial references in mind.

Initially, the building shocked the public when it was inaugurated in 1977, but it has since become one of the most emblematic designs in France. Over the years, the Centre Pompidou has built a strong reputation in the world of modern and contemporary art with an interdisciplinary dimension.Paintings from masters like Picasso, Miro or Warhol are now part of the permanent collection. With over thirty major art exhibitions a year, a new contemporary creation festival, several cinematic cycles, concerts, performances and dance, the Centre Pompidou has something for everyone.Children are not forgotten either, with exhibitions and workshops especially created for them in the «Galerie des enfants» (Children’s Gallery).

Notre-Dame de ParisCelebrated in novels, « Notre-Dame de Paris » by Victor Hugo, films and even in television... the cathedral is known the world over. The imposing Notre-Dame is located on Ile de la Cité, the historical and geographical centre of Paris. If you stand on the esplanade in front of the cathedral, you will discover that this monument is truly ‘the heart of France’. As « le point zéro » indicates, the bronze star etched in the ground is the point of departure from which all distances are measured in the hexagon.Still on the esplanade, observe the two towers of

this gothic work of art, chiseled in the manner of a silversmith. Even though the towers may look similar, the northern tower to the left is actually wider than the other. If you climb up one of the towers you have an incredible view of the city. Don’t be afraid of the malefic animals and fantastical beasts that seem to scream out at you as you go by. Built to re-create the unsettling atmosphere of the Middle Ages, these Chimeras are purely decorative and the Gargoyles, situated at each corner, serve as drainpipes to evacuate water in the gutters. On rainy days, don’t miss a chance to see these stone monsters transformed into fountains.

Overlooking the banks of the Seine, the Jardin des Plantes (botanical gardens) is a magical place devoted to flora and fauna, which has been entrancing Parisians for more than four centuries. The story of the establishment and development of this site is also told in the Jardin des Plantes’ Cabinet d’histoire (history corner), in a charming building decorated like a private house.

At the Grande Galerie de l’Evolution (Great Gallery of Evolution), from dinosaurs to giraffes, via whales and giant squid, etc., hundreds of mounted or fossilized animal species explain the history of transformations in the species since the dawn of creation. To see living animals, head to the Ménagerie (zoo), before studying skeletons, organs and shells at the Galerie de Paléontologie (Palaeontology Gallery).

The Galerie des Enfants (Children’s Galery) welcomes children aged 6 to 12 accompanied by an adult for a fun look at biodiversity and the challenges at stake, in the cities, the rivers, the tropical forests and Planet Earth as a whole. Built by Gustave Eiffel for the Universal Exhibition of 1889 which was held to celebrate the first centenary of the French revolution, the Eiffel Tower was built in 2 years, 2 months and 5 days, a tremendous technical and architectural feat at the time. It became an enormous success.

Built for only 20 years, it was saved by the scientific experiments that Eiffel encouraged, and in particular the first radio, then telecommunication trans-missions. Over the decades, it has experienced extraordinary exploits and illumina-tions, and prestigious visitors. The Eiffel Tower has been the setting for many events of international im-port (lighting up, centenary of the Tower, fireworks to usher in the year 2000) and over its 120 years, it has ac-ted as a canvas for novelty painting and lighting schemes, twinkling lights, the skating rink on the 1st floor, etc.

Place Charles-de-Gaulle - 75008 Paris www.monuments-nationaux.frMétro: Charles-de-Gaulle-Etoile (lines 1, 2 and 6)

The most famous symbol of the French Republic, the Arc de Triomphe, is an integral part of the urban Paris landscape.

In 1806, Napoleon 1st decided to construct an arch, inspired by antique arches, to pay tribute to the French armed forces. The arc sits sumptuously poised at the top of the Champs-Elysées, 50 metres high and 45 metres wide.Among the sculptures adorning the facade, you can see the memorial plaque « Le départ des volontaires de 1792 », also known as the « Marseillaise » on the wall, commemorating the soldiers who

went to battle for France. The monument bears the names of the most imminent soldiers and shelters the « Tomb of the Unknown Soldier », where the flame is light each night.Since 2008, the Arc de Triomphe proposes a new exhibition that traces the history of the arch in a playful, interactive way. Videos show off the sculptural aspects of the monument, invisible from the ground. Make sure you’re at the top for the sunset over Paris, or at night to see all the lights.

11Musée Grévin

The English have Madame Tussauds, and the French have Grévin. No introduction needed for its world-famous celebrities, old and new, sculpted in wax for eternity.

From Zidane to Louis XIV, Callas to Elton John, Einstein to Tony Parker, no fewer than 300 alarmingly lifelike statues are waiting to be met.Relive some great moments in French history, such as Jeanne d’Arc at the stake or the assassination of Henri IV, and retrace some of the most marking events of the 20th century (the first steps on the moon, the fall of the Berlin wall…)

But Grévin is also a treasure-trove of listed 1900s decors: a pocket-sized theatre “à l’italienne”, a grand marble staircase, the cupola and the baroque-style Hall of Columns with its guilt and mosaics. But above all, discover «Palais des Mirages» (the Hall of Mirrors)! This magical uses sound and light to dazzle visitors with its unique optical illusions.

12 Paris-Story

How to find out all about Paris in 75 minutes? The multimedia show Paris-Story, which you can see in the heart of the area of Opéra, has the answer.

Victor Hugo himself is your virtual guide through a mass of photos, film extracts, paintings and music going back through the history of the capital from the time of its foundation until the present day. No less than twenty centuries unfold before you on a 12 metre wide screen: Lutetia, the invasions, the Revolution, the great works of Haussmann, the creation of the Champs Elysées... everything you

need to understand Paris’ different faces is in this film, translated into 14 languages via an audio system.Following the screening, you can have some fun finding where you are staying using Paris-Miniature and its more than one hundred maps of the city’s main monuments, streets, gardens and canals. Using more than 150 tactile images and three interactive screens, you can fly over Paris’ best-known sites and see the various stages of its expansion and its consecutive outer walls.Even more impressive is the Paris-Experience, where you can go on a 3D virtual visit (with special glasses) on five plasma screens showing short films on five special themes. A chance to see one of the very first cinema sequences, filmed by the Lumière Brothers from the top of the newly-built Tour Eiffel.

15Les Catacombes

The underground system of Paris is a veritable labyrinth covering 300 kilometres, where two of those kilometres actually serve as a cavernous cemetery.

At the end of the 19th-century, the cemeteries of Paris were saturated. The state then decided to dig up the six million bodies, Parisians who were buried there, including famous figures such as La Fontaine, Montesquieu and Danton.

Far from lugubrious, a visit to the Catacombes, allows you to see the capital from another perspective. Solid arches and reassuring lighting make the visit agreeable and take you on a unique journey out of time. You won’t be the first to satisfy your morbid curiosity, King Charles X, the Austrian Emperor François 1st and Napoleon III all visited the Catacombes in their day.

17Ballon de Paris

Come and experience the unique feeling of flying over Paris onboard the biggest balloon in the world!

Installed since 1999 in the Parc André Citroën (15th arrondissement), Ballon de Paris has already initiated more than 700,000 people to the joys of flying in a hot air balloon, a world record for the number of passenger carried by a lighter-than-air craft. The balloon weighs around 2 tons including its cradle, the fabric and the ropes. It can carry up to 30 passengers (around 2.5 tons)

at a time, which makes it the greatest tethered hot-air balloon in the world. The balloon is 35 metres tall and 22.5 metres in diameter and it rises up to an altitude of 150 metres. It is surely the least polluting aircraft in the world since it is operated by an electric winch.

Top tip• Suitable for all age groups.

Opening hours and dates: Every day from 9am until 30 minutes before the park closes. In order to avoid queuing for a long time at peak times (weekends, school holidays and public holidays) we recommend that you come for a balloon flight in the morning.

This ‘green city’ combines luxurious vegetation with contemporary architecture. Alongside bamboo trees, vines and blue ferns, the park is punctuated with small red structures in original forms - known as ‘madness’ - and of course the famous Géode, an immense spherical cinema made of steel that boasts a giant hemispheric screen.

For a refreshing pause, take a walk along the canal de l’Ourq that runs through the park. A veritable cultural centre, sprinkled with various structures dedicated to the arts. Families visiting the Cité des sciences or playing in ‘wind garden’ blend in with the young concert crowd at the Zenith, Trabendo or Cabaret Sauvage.

Music students at the Conservatoire de Paris leave behind the classroom for a bit of improving on the lawn before heading to one of the restaurants in the park. A number of special events are also organised. In the summer months don’t miss the chance to see a film in the outdoor cinema, a jazz concert or a circus show under the giant tent.

Not to mention the mysterious island - a sort of giant warren with sound animations and a large pyramid with slides.Children and adults then set off to discover the Renaissance château belonging to the family of the Counts of La Panouse. A guide shares secrets and anecdotes about the sumptuous apartments, the tapestries, and the furniture of the Salon Blanc (white drawing room), a Decorative Arts gem. Don‘t miss the rooms on the ground floor. They give the impression that the sun crosses the château to rise and set.

Once you make it past the gate, there is no mistaking why Chamarande was awarded France’s «Jardin Remarquable» certification. With its stretches of water and generous shaded expanses, a romantic stroll through the grounds would be enough to make anyone happy.

In fact, there’s a lot more to discover. Indeed, the domain manages to consolidate its historical past with modern-day culture. For history lovers, Saturdays are a chance to enjoy a visit complete with discussions on the subject of heritage and contemporary art. Finally, in June and July, every Sunday is a family occasion to take part in creative activities under the guidance an artist. 31Domaine national de Saint-Cloud

Which garden designed by Le Nôtre and considered one of Europe’s finest can be found just outside Paris? That of the Chateau de Versailles? Wrong! Another French park, less well-known than that of the Sun King, extends over 460 hectares to the South-East of Paris.

It is that of the Domaine national de Saint-Cloud, to be found just a stone’s throw from the Bois de Boulogne, on the banks of the Seine. Here there is no chateau (it was destroyed in 1892) but a splendid combination of greenery and water which has delighted generations of sovereigns who have holidayed there since the 16th century. Now you have a chance to stroll down the pathways and discover the charm of the French garden, the English-style Bosquées de Trocadéro (Trocadero garden), Marie-Antoinette’s flower garden where the State’s roses are grown and the numerous copses.Above all admire the splendour of the Grande

Cascade by Le Pautre and the dozens of fountains, pools and statues which surround it. If you are a contemporary art enthusiast, don’t miss the monumental sculpture by Scottish artist Bryan McCormack in homage to the wind, a recent installation.

The final of the 1998 World Football Championship between Brazil and France, the World Athletic Finals, Madonna, the Rolling Stones or U2…

The great moments of emotion for one single place : le Stade de France. Completed just in time to host the final of the World Football Championship in 1998, the stadium is the largest in France. 80,000 seats are available and transformable depending on the event : sports, concerts or other events, the Stade de France suits all needs. Don’t miss a visit behind the scenes. The players changing room is obviously the highlight

of the tour. But the decoration can also be seen in the training rooms used by the teams to warm up before the match. Take a look at the over-all architecture of the site : the roof is an architectural achievement like no other with 13,000 tons of metal protecting the tribunes from rain without closing the stadium. But it is also a message : this ellipse that appears to be suspended in air is a symbol of the universality in sports.

34 Château de Vincennes

The Château de Vincennes is an integral part of the Parisian landscape. His imposing fortress possesses its own exceptional history. From the 14th-century to the 19th-century the castle was constantly changing. Originally constructed as a hunting lodge, for the King’s of France drawn to the forest and its fowl, it was then turned into a Manor House and finally transformed, by King Charles V, into a fortress with dikes, dungeons and towers.

These successive changes have brought about an impressive final result, making the Château de Vincennes one of the most important Medieval structures in Europe. Come and discover the rich history of the fortress. The cottages of the King and Queen, the Medieval Towers, the dungeon...Big or small, all have their eyes wide open as they visit the chapel, imagining the battles that took place within the castle walls and the daily lives of the King’s who lived there.

Behind the scenes of the Eiffel TowerVisit the backstage areas of this amazing Paris attraction, accompanied by a tour guide who will tell you endless anecdotes about the places you are visiting.

Your visit will begin in the former bunker concealed under the Champ de Mars. You will then be shown the surprising and imposing original machine room which still controls the lifts to the tower. On arrival at the 2nd level of the tower, a surprising and unique experience awaits: like a VIP, you will be escorted onto the roof of the prestigious Le Jules Verne restaurant to discover an exclusive, 360° panoramic view of Paris.

The Opéra Garnier:an architectural masterpieceAs you follow the tour guide, you will be amazed at the richness of its architecture, the exuberance of its decoration and the variety of the materials used.

The numerous paintings and sculptures of Palais Garnier give it both the air of a theatre and a museum. Your visit will begin in the Rotonde des Abonnés which is where spectators were once welcomed to the opera house. You will discover the unique signature of the architect, concealed among the arabesques. After respectfully saluting the somewhat disturbing Pythonisse, you will climb the steps of the Grand Escalier leading to the ornate theatre, salons and foyers.
