Industrial robots in theautomotive industry
Ultramodern laboratories andtest facilities are available tothe research and developmentteam at Lapp for this purpose. In addition, they have also coll-ected an immense know-how inthis field over the last 25 years. All robot cables are always deve-loped in close cooperation withthe customer, and all require-ments such as cross sections,
movements and the surroundingenvironment are included in thedevelopment process.

Youve certainly often seen robots at work. Theyre constantly in motion. They pull and they turnand they accept it all without complaining when theyre installed in heat or cold, in water or che-micals. A robot like this has to withstand a lot. And so do its cables. Especially in the automotiveindustry, the robots of today have a permanent place in production lines. Robot cables are used inover 60 percent of all cases in the automotive industry. Its a very sensitive area, as a production-line standstill costs a fortune. Robots just arent allowed to break down.

Robot Multibus cable
In the past the cable routingon the robot was such that therespective field bus line wasmounted in the robot dependingon the customer or the order. Inthe process, the choice of thesuitable cable was dependent onthe respective field bus presentin or intended for a system. In contrast, a simpler and lessexpensive option for robot wiring
results by using a Multibus
cable with the matching con-nector. With one cable for themost common field buses, therobot manufacturer can designthe electromechanical compon-ents in the robot in a universaland standardised manner. Thisenables robot manufacturers toreduce their range of variants. Inaddition, the simpler handling inassembly and the reduced sto-
cking required help cut costs.
However, not only the cable qua-lity is decisive for smooth operati-on, but also the connector design. The current state of technology inindustrial applications is the M23connector.The cable clamping is realizedwith a screw fitting that clampsthe cable sheath, but neverthe-
less permits a movement of theindividual cores within the cable. Here the use of an extrudeddesign with which the connectorand cable can be interconnectedwith a polyurethane is advantage-ous.In this case cable clamping isrealised via a defined pressing ofthe metal bushing onto the cable,
which is then extrusion-coatedwith polyurethane following pre-assembly.The metal housing provides forthe vibration resistance for thecontact system and for increasedcorrosion and EMC protection.
16
Due to the dynamic challenges to the transfer media - from bending in ground cables to combi-ned torsion in robot joints - optimized materials and connection solutions are essential. At thesame time, the limited space available at the robot makes it necessary to realise data and energytransmission together in just one cable and in one connector.

For more than 25 years thecompany KaRo Rohrreinigungs-Technology GmbH has beendeveloping, producing and sel-ling high-quality pipe and sewercleaning machines and inspec-tion systems. For the wiring ofits sewer TV devices it puts itstrust in the many decades ofLapp know-how.
Water- the basis for all life
Reconditioning is extremely dif-ficult and expensive. Lapp has
developed new cables that con-siderably simplify the inspectionof sewerage systems. Thanks tothis push cable, sewers can beexamined quite simply with avideo camera. As a result, evenlocations inaccessible in the pastcan now be reached. There are various cable typesdepending on the need:
1. Push cables: These consistof copper cores and a rigidcentral element that enables
the cable to be guided into thesewer pipe.
2. Pull cables: These consist of
copper cores, coaxial cablesand Kevlar elements to catch
the tensile forces. The cableconnects the sewer inspectionrobot and the central com-mand post to the surface.
If the damage is then localisedand is not too large, additionalsewerage reconditioning robotsare used. These can repair thedamage from inside withoutexpensive excavation work. Thecable must be able to withstanda great deal. It must be resis-tant to water, dirt and chemi-
cals, must be extremely abrasi-on-resistant and must withstandvery high tensile forces.
18
Inspection and Sewerage ReconditioningRobots
Ground water is the most important drinking water resource. To protect this important com-modity, there are cameras that can locate damage in our sewage lines. This is intended toprotect the environment by preventing dirty water from getting into our valuable ground water.Unfortunately, the sewerage systems are antiquated almost everywhere in the world.

In 1982 Wolfgang Rausch foun-ded Rausch GmbH & Co. KGwith the goal of producing TVinspection systems for opticalpipe and sewer inspections. Thefact that his concept was rightfrom the outset is proven bythe companys success. Sinceits founding, Wolfgang RauschGmbH & Co. KG has grown on ahotly contested market to a com-
pany with world-renowned pro-ducts. Today Wolfgang RauschGmbH & Co. KG, with its teamof 45 employees, is doing itsutmost to continue this successin future - with innovative ideasand a tried-and-true philosophy,i.e. quality from the ground up.And thats why great importanceis placed on the quality of thebrand-name products of Lapp.

Inspection robots/optical pipe and sewer inspections
By using the specially developedUV radiator and its shadow-freepositioning within the light train, the UV liners are optimally irradi-ated by the KASRO light sources.
This method enables the effi-cient, economical reconditioningof sewers and piping. Thanks tothe simple use at the construc-
tion site - without chemicalsor excavation costs - damagedpipes can also be repaired indifficult-to-reach areas. Thecompany ProKasro Mechatronik
uses the special cable from Lappdescribed below to connect thelight train to the central com-mand post on the surface.
