TEDDY BEAR HOSPITAL • Aims at helping young children to overcome their

fear of doctors and hospital environment • Role play with teddy bear as a patient, children as

teddy's parents and medical students as teddy doctors • For any questions please contact: [email protected]. TWINNING PROJECT • Aims to couple two European Faculty Member or-

ganisations as twins and exchange one or more students among each other in a cultural and social level.

EUROTALK • Aims to improve mobility and free movement within

Europe by offering training in various languages specific to medical care situations (including sign language).

EMSA COUNCIL MEETING • Aims to improve the cooperation and communication of the medical

students within Europe, by representing the interests and opinions of the medical students in geographical Europe, discussing and forming joint policies on issues surrounding medical students, and defending the rights and interest of medical students across Europe.

PUBLICATIONS • JEMSA (Journal of EMSA on Medical and Scientific Affairs), which

is published annually. You can send in research papers to: [email protected].

• EUROMEDS; monthly newsletter of EMSA to inform the EMSA members about the latest activities and upcoming events of EMSA within Europe. EMSA members can send in articles to:[email protected]

ANNUAL MEETINGS • National Coordinators’ & Enthusiasts’ Meeting; Meeting where

people can share their work with others and learn from each other. It takes place around March/April.

• EMSA General Assembly; Biggest meeting of EMSA, on which members can vote on different EMSA matters. It takes place around October.

The idea of a congregation of medical students was born in 1990 at the first European Medical Students Congress. In 1991, the European Medical Students’ Association (EMSA) was founded at the first General Assembly in Brussels, Bel-gium. Since this time, EMSA has grown and expanded its membership within Europe. EMSA currently has 63 active Faculty Member Organisations in 19 different countries across geographical Europe.

MEDICAL EDUCATION EMSA’s goals on the field of Medical Education are to: • Ensure that all students engaged in improving medical education

have a basic knowledge of the concepts, definitions, research, and possibilities that exist in the field of medical education

• Raise awareness of patient safety and minimise medical error

• Spread knowledge of the Bologna Process

• Lobby for changes in medical curricula as a result of the Bologna process

• Improve mobility and free movement within Europe

MEDICAL ETHICS EMSA’s goals on the field of Medical Ethics are to:

• Raise awareness of the ethical aspects of every healthcare-related interaction

• Build a database of ethical dilemmas for instructional purposes

• Spread evidence-based teaching in medical ethics

• Improve mobility by helping students understand the different values and beliefs that medical professionals encounter across Europe

• Provide an internet discussion forum for a constructive discussion on medical ethics

• Facilitate self-study in medical ethics through a database of Internet links

• Define the outcomes which a medical student should achieve in the field of medical ethics Contribute to European discussions on medical ethics by issuing policy statements

MEDICAL SCIENCE EMSA’s goals on the field of Medical Science are to:

• Connect young medical researchers through the establishment of a topic-based research forum on the EMSA homepage

• Spread knowledge of the latest improvements in care, scientific dis-coveries and technological advances

• Help students spread knowledge of their own original research through publication in the Journal of the European Medical Students’ Association on Medical and Scientific Affairs (JEMSA)

• Recruit new students to medical research and scientific inquiry

WHY EMSA?

PROJECTS

EMSA seeks to improve the health and quality of care of the citizens of Europe, by acting as a conduit for increased interac-tion and sharing of knowledge between European medical stu-dents in the areas of medical education, medical ethics and medical science. EMSA main objectives are to: • CREATE, in collaboration with other organizations, a Euro-

pean centre of communication, where all medical students can participate;

• PROVIDE a meeting place for all medical students in Europe, where they can come together to defend their in-terests and ensure the quality of medicine in Europe;

• GATHER, ANALYSE and DISCUSS information on social, cultural, academic, economic and ethical aspects of medi-cine;

• COOPERATE with other organizations sharing in these same objectives.

INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATIONS • CPME Internship - Standing Committee of European Doc-

tors in Brussels - duration is 6 months, twice every year • Cooperation and joint Liaison Officer for CPME and PWG -

Permanent Working Group of European Junior Doctors. • Cooperation and Liaison Officer for WHO-EURO - WHO

Regional Office for Europe • EMSA is cooperating with many other organizations, stu-

dent and non-student ones, and has Liaison Officers where needed, depending on the level of cooperation
