Headway is a Twin Cities-based nonprofit

organization driven by our commitment to

serve the emotional and mental health needs

of the people in our community. Last year, our

diverse team of 235 therapists, counselors, case

managers, and administrative staff provided

more than 134,000 hours of direct service

working with nearly 20,000 unique clients.

When we consider the family members and

others connected with our clients, our services

reached nearly 80,000 lives.

In 2017, we continued to expand our school-

based mental health services as well as our

work addressing school success, truancy,

and student mental health through support,

advocacy, and case management. Headway

therapists worked with almost 12,000 students

in 100 schools, primarily in the Anoka/Hennepin,

Bloomington, and Burnsville school districts.

For the past 10 years, Headway has been

providing prenatal and infant home visiting

services in partnership with Hennepin County.

Thanks to generous funding support from

the Medica Foundation, Otto Bremer Trust,

Sheltering Arms Foundation, and a multi-year

financial commitment from the Minnesota

Department of Health, Headway expanded

this program in 2017 with the launch of Family

Spirit, an early childhood home visiting program

designed specifically to serve American Indian

families. The new effort uses a curriculum,

developed by the Johns Hopkins Center for

American Indian Health in partnership with

Navajo, White Mountain Apache, and San Carlos

Apache Tribes. The service model enhances the

relationship between mother, father, and infant

by leveraging cultural assets and an indigenous

understanding of health. We also expanded the

scope of our pre-natal and infant home visiting

program to include culturally appropriate

services for East African immigrant families in

Minneapolis.

We know that to better serve the needs in our

community, we need to continuously improve

our understanding of ourselves as well as

the people we serve. To that end, Headway

launched an organization-wide, multiyear

initiative focusing on understanding and

celebrating worldview. The initial results of this

initiative have been extremely powerful, and we

anticipate continued, positive impact from this

commitment over the next several years.

We are grateful for the support, partnerships

and collaborations within the community. As

we look forward, we are excited to see many

opportunities to support emotional and mental

health throughout the community in new ways.

The Board of Directors and staff extend our gratitude to Becky Boland, Blake Darsow, and Julie Smolich, who completed their service on Headway’s Board of Directors during 2017. We sincerely appreciate their generous commitment of time and talent as they worked with us to transform lives and strengthen our community.
