EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN MEDIA

My name is Robyn Hammond, I am a 17 year old student currently studying Multi-Media journalism at South Downs college. I have a number of different interests, but one of my main interest would have to be photography. I regularly take photos on my digital camera and my SLR camera and I also archived a C in my photography GCSE. One of my other main interests is music, I love to know what’s happening in the music industry and who is releasing new music. I also tend to go to many different events, mainly to with music but some are also to do with YouTube. My ideal job would be working within music journalism. As a big lover of music I feel as if that this would be the kind of job that I would feel very passionate about and I would work to the best of my abilities to do well. I would love to have the opportunities to review music, concerts and to meet new people along the way. A music journalist is expected to spend most of their time researching and reporting what's happening in the world of music, but they could also get a chance to review albums and concerts, interview the artist etc.. The Deputy Editor of Hip-Hop Wired has said official hours for a music journalist is between 8am-5pm, but it tends to be more due to the amount of work that has to be done and the music industry never sleeps and anything could happen at anytime. They can also earn £20,000 and more, depending on their job title and how long they have been working in the profession.

ABOUT ME

STRENGHTS• A team worker, which then strengths like being co-operative, perceptive, diplomatic, a good listener

and a person who averts friction. Having theses kinds of traits is good to have in that kind of industry, because even though you do work independently, you are constantly surrounded by people and their ideas. I’m also good when it comes to using modern technology and the internet e.g. computers, smart phones, social media…which is key in the journalism industry.

WEAKNESSES • can be indecisive, prefers to avoid confrontation. But I can also lack in lack in confidence, when

talking within a group. I can also get distracted quiet easily, which could be lethal and put me behind.

THREATS • Will be other people, because this industry is extremely competitive and hard to get into. Maybe not

being able to drive could restrict me from getting to my place of work.

OPPORTUNITIES

To get more work experience, because this will not only help me build up my skill and weaknesses but it will show my future employers that I do work hard and that I have plenty of experience of working in the industry.

SWOT ANALYSIS

End Goal: Work in within music journalism GOAL WHY/WHAT WILL I GAIN

2015: Start multi-media journalism course at South Downs college.

To help me understand what I would like to do in the future, but it will also help improve on my writing skills. And this will then help me move onto higher education.

2016: Get work experience at a local radio or newspaper.

From these experiences I will be able to see how

2017: Finish college , then go university and and take a music journalism course. (a 3 year course)

This will teach me all I need to know about music journalism and it may offer me new work experience along the way.

2017: get work experience at a more music based magazine.

This will start directing me more in the music journalism direction.

2020: Finish university and start looking for a job. Also hopefully have a driving licence by then.

By having a driving licence this will give me more option on where I could work.

2021: Apply for job at Sugarscape (A website that keeps young people up to date with what’s happening in the entertainment world).
