Sports come naturally to some peopl e, but to most others it could still be developed at least to a reasonable le vel with p rope r techniques and training . In the evolution 01 man from hunters to the modern day, activities such as runnmg , th rowing or even ward ing off ph ys ica l dangers have come to reflect today in the sports that we play. Sport is an exciting and healthy pastime to many, but if sport is really ones pass ion it can be a very reward ing and satisly ing career too. one has to ;ook !f1 e art7Wii'"' and drwslopment 01 sport in-'ndia . 1982 was a water shed year . The As ian Games hosted at Delh i provided new ,nfrastructure like modern stad ia and holistic and tulsome train ing and coach ing structure with the onset of Sports Authority of India. Media covered the Games in a big way and beamed matches live to homes . All these aspects were replicated at a much higher scale and magnitude during the Common Wealth Games In 2010 providing spurt to sport on the whole in the country. a rg ng pc s In bet ween India has hoste d nume rous other big ticket sporting events I Ke the two cricket worid cups (1996 and 2011), for mula one race , yeariy ATP event the Chennai Open Tennis etc. Besides top football clubs like Bayern Mun ic h have come to India along with the Argentina football team . . This is also happening partly because India is seen as a major em erging sport destination havin g untapped potential both in terms of player talents and a huge market. Then there are successful players like Sachin Tendulkar , Abhinav Bindra, RVS Rathore Sushil Kumar , Viswanath,an Anand , Mary Kom and many others who have raised the profile 01 sports people in India and have attracted youth to take up their respective games as a lull time passion. All this has resulted in a huge demand for people In sport . The growth IS happening two fold. Private sports regulatory bodies like the Boa rd of Con tr ol for Cricket in India (BCCI) with the success lui organ isat ion of the Indian Prem ier lea gu e have showed the way lor other sport lederations too to look f or corporate sponsored events. To be a sportspe rson : How to approach It is always good to identify career In sports as young as one can . This is more cruc ia l If one is as ut'!() .o speTStm. One 01 the better options to look for training is the various facilities of the Sports Author ity of India. More abo ut SAl is discussed later in the article. Us ually the entry is at the 12th level. One can begin career at the amateur level and start parti cipatrng in the State level, regional level and finally graduate to the National level. While SAl is at the lIlational level, it has various Sta te level br anches th at cater to the regional sport talents. Other than this there are various State level org ani s ati ons that lo ok after nurtu ring sportin g talents. In most cases, the governmen t bears the cost 01 training and in' bring ing in top level coaches. For example, the SAl centre in Patiala has fou r core disciplines like boxing and often coaches Irom Cuba and other countries are h ired to provide best training. Obviously, government bears the cost for these coaches and other training lacillties . Most 01 the SAl programmes also have scholarships and student supports and students can also look lor linancial assistance. g8 group competition sa re a good starting point for a beginner sportsperson. As said above, being a sportsper son is not the only option available. Phy sical and Mental Traits required If sp otted and trained ea rly . almost ever f ?ne among us has lhe talent t; excel in some sport at a reasonaole level . But to some people sport come naturally and it becomes tneir passion as well. If one is passionate about sport that is the fll st starti ng point. Spor t is career that re quires liletime of dedication and there is no point entering the field half- heartedly . Most ot the games require strong physicel allributes . This doesn't mean that one has to be born with it, the whole purpose of training aOO- co,aenh"1g is to , ttune the body to its optimum lev el and imbibe the excellence in skills tor top re sults . One d in itely has to be physica lly st rong , agile and flex ible among other qualit ies and for t hat the very basic eligibility is the ability to work hard on fitness. But sport is not physical on ly , coac hes around the world will tell that games are played between the yeal'S, that is, they are high on mental'quotient as well. One has to be tough mentally, show a lot of patience at the sport, have a right mix 01 aggres sion and cool minded n es s and be intelligent enough to grab the littl e chances that come their way and use it to come out the winner. Other than being a player, one can be coach , trainer. journalist. medicine pract it ion er, etc. Some of the most popular professional and job prospects are enlisted below .
