Overview The Employers Needs Survey marks a joint effort of the Chapel Hill-Carborro Chamber of Commerce and the Community Empowerment Fund to assess workforce development needs of employers in the county to capture:

1. The hiring needs of local employers (e.g. Which positions have the most turnover, the skills they have the hardest time filling in their hiring,

positions with opportunity for earning a living wage)

2. The hiring preferences of local employers, and the accompanyingrationale (e.g. If the employer is willing to hire individuals with

misdemeanors, but not felonies, and the reason being related to liability)

It has been disseminated both electronically and physically since February , 2016 and as of today includes the responses of 49 businesses (42 complete) in the County.

What are the main issues that make it problematic for you company to hire individuals with a criminal background?

Answered: 25 Skipped: 24

negligenceTheir availability and people skillsEntering occupied apartments without supervision.Employees are sent to Customer HomesBecause our employees work in people's homes it is important that they are honest and trustworthy. Many times we rely on 'gut instinct' to determine if a candidate is a good fit.federal and state regulationsPlacement with the client families are not comfortable with caregivers who have past convictionsWork atmosphere can be described as highly stressful. Candidates with a questionable background may not be the best fit.Company policycontact with the public and other co-workers; need to be able to handle a high-stress or frustrating situation with a guest without a high emotional response Consider criminal history on a case by case basis; no charge specifically disqualifies someone; however, murder was mentioned as something that would be viewed very seriously We are more open to hiring people with criminal backgrounds when the offenses aren't job related and does not interfere with the business. It is just company policy. It is more lenient with cooks than servers. We typically hire students so it has not been an issue/option.We try to keep a positive business. We take care of the elderly...most vulnerable populationWe are a new business and just can't take the risk.We hire students for the most part so this is usually not an issue. Not sure about trusting individuals and not knowing their pastHonesty and behaviorEverything is very open and we need honest people since money is accessible and we need honesty about the number of hours worked.Do not want to take a riskDon't forget the question mark! (This is an important bit of questioning and well-phrased)Crimes of violence especially if re-occurring.
