Topics addressed were the need for stronger compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in the areas of housing, municipal communication and transportation, rent vouchers, employment and job coaching, and programs for children who are Deaf or hard of hearing. “In our first year, I am thrilled to see the expansion of the department to five employees, empowering the Deaf and giving a real sense of independence, one participant at a time,” said Director of Deaf Services Beth Wagmeister. A few moments before, West Palm Beach Adult Day Traning (ADT) Coordinator Rachel Pinder had proudly mentioned, “When Molli first came to us, she was eating goldfish crackers, and now she’s using the microwave, pressing the buttons on her own and heating up rice.” Molli joined Gulfstream Goodwill Industries’ West Palm Beach ADT Program two years ago. This was a great time of change, as Molli had transitioned from Wellington High School to the ADT Program and moved out of her grandparents’ home into a group home. Initially, as an individual living with autism, Molli had a difficult time adjusting to her new life. Her routines had been altered. After two years of setting and reaching program goals and receiving encouragement from Gulfstream Goodwill’s staff, Molli has gained more independence. Today, she uses the microwave on her own and washes and dries her dishes without help.

Retail News

Store managers impress with Treasure of the Week finds

Hidden in plain sight are treasures that line the shelves and hang on the racks of Gulfstream Goodwill’s stores. Whether on the hunt for a new electronic item, back-to-school ensemble or the sun-kissed comfort of gently used patio furniture, shoppers are hurrying to our stores on a mission to claim these treasures. One store commands the Facebook and Twitter spotlights each Friday as items become Treasure of the Week glory.

The Treasure of the Week social media campaign has been the

agency’s most successful to date, and is also a display of teamwork between retail and marketing. The Marketing and Development Department would like to thank store managers and assistant managers for their on-going cooperation. Without the assistance and leadership of store management, this campaign would not draw the positive attention our retail operation deserves -- not just from our customer base, but also from Goodwill Industries International and other Goodwill organizations around the nation.

New director of donation servicesRafael “Ralph” Tirona has been hired as director of donation services. Ralph oversees daily operations for north and south operations centers under the direction of the VP of retail and operations. Ralph previously worked as emergency management senior consultant at Witt O’Brein’s, LLC, in North Dakota.

Please join us in congratulating Ralph and supporting him in his new role!

Goodwill Stuart Store hosts Stuart/Martin County Chamber of Commerce breakfast

Gulfstream Goodwill’s Stuart Store & Donation Center hosted a Stuart/Martin County Chamber of Commerce breakfast on Tuesday, June 28. Nearly 50 people attended the breakfast, catered and generously donated by Berry Fresh Café and Cheesecakes and More by Gina.

The success of this event would not have been as great or gone as smoothly as it did without the Stuart Store’s staff and the leadership of store management.

A big thanks to the Goodwill Stuart Store & Donation Center staff and management team!(L to R) Raleigh Jackson, Yolanda Ramos, Joan

50th Anniversary Gala

When you’re out of the office, it’s courteous to set an out of office reply. This will tell people who attempt to send you a message that you’re currently out of the office and will review their message when you return. To set up “Out of Office Replies” in Microsoft Outlook 2010 see the steps below …

1. Click the File tab (known as the Backstage View) on the Ribbon. In the Info section, click the Automatic Replies (Out of Office) button.

2. In the Automatic Replies dialogue box, you can choose whether or not to send Automatic Replies. You can even schedule your out of office replies. Once you’ve chosen your settings and generated a message, click Ok and the out of office replies will now be in effect. It’s recommended that you schedule out of office replies because they will turn off automatically after the scheduled time. Otherwise, you will need to manually turn them off.

3. To provide top-notch customer service, be sure to provide an alternate contact in your automatic email message.

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) affect the muscles, nerves, blood vessels, ligaments and tendons. Workers in many different industries and occupations can be exposed to risk factors at work, such as lifting heavy items, bending, reaching overhead, pushing and pulling heavy loads, working in awkward body postures and performing the similar tasks repetitively. Exposure to these known risk factors for MSDs increases a worker’s risk of injury.

Work-related MSDs can be prevented. Ergonomics -- fitting a job to a person -- helps lessen muscle fatigue, increases productivity and reduces the number and severity of work-related MSDs.Examples of MSDs:

• Carpal tunnel syndrome• Tendinitis• Rotator cuff injuries (affects

the shoulder)• Epicondylitis (affects the

elbow)• Trigger finger• Muscle strains and low back

injuriesImpact of MSDs in the workplaceWork related MSDs are among the most frequently reported causes of lost or restricted work time.According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) in 2013, MSD cases accounted for 33 percent of all worker injury and illness cases. What is ergonomics?Ergonomics is the science of fitting jobs to people. It focuses on designing workstations, tools and work tasks for safety, efficiency and comfort. Effective ergonomic design reduces discomfort and injuries, and increases job satisfaction and productivity.

Common ergonomic risk factors:• Awkward body postures:

maintaining an awkward, unsupported or fixed posture such as bending, reaching or twisting for prolonged periods.

• Excessive repetition: doing the same motions over and over again.

• Excessive force: physical exertion or pressure on any part of the body while lifting, pushing, pulling or gripping a tool.

• Contact stress: pressure by tool edges or hard surfaces on soft tissues of the body. The palms and elbows are often at high risk.

• Vibration: using vibrating or impact tools and equipment.

What are your responsibilities? Managers need to be aware of ergonomic risks and prevention strategies. They also need to encourage input from staff about ergonomic issues. The appropriate ergonomic furniture and tools should always be provided. Healthy work patterns should always be promoted. This could include incorporating breaks and rotation for repetitive tasks.Everyone should participate in ergonomic training. Always listen to your body and adjust your furniture and tools to support comfortable and safe postures. Think before you lift, get help if necessary and follow safe guidelines. Vary your job tasks throughout the day and take frequent stretch breaks during repetitive tasks.
