  • 1. What Is Empathy?Empathy is simply recognizing emotions in others, andbeing able to "put yourself in another person's shoes" understanding the other person's perspective and reality.

PUT ASIDE YOUR VIEWPOINT,AND TRY TO SEE THINGSFROM THE OTHER PERSON'SPOINT OF VIEWWhen you do this, you'll realizethat other people most likelyaren't being evil, unkind,stubborn, or unreasonable they're probably just reacting tothe situation with the knowledgethey have. 3. Once you "see" why othersbelieve what they believe,acknowledge it. Remember:acknowledgement does notalways equal agreement.You can accept that peoplehave different opinionsfrom your own, and thatthey may have good reasonto hold those opinions. 4. Examine Your Attitude.Are you more concernedwith getting your way,winning, or being right? Or,is your priority to find asolution, buildrelationships, and acceptothers? Without an openmind and attitude, youprobably won't haveenough room for empathy 5. Listen to the entiremessage that the otherperson is trying tocommunicate. Listen with your ears what is being said, andwhat tone is beingused? Listen with your eyes what is the persondoing with his or herbody while speaking? Listen with yourinstincts do you sensethat the person is notcommunicatingsomething important? Listen with yourheart what do youthink the other person 6. Ask What The Other PersonWould DoWhen in doubt, ask theperson to explain his orher position. This isprobably the simplest,and most direct, way tounderstand the otherperson. 7.
